In addition to the approaches mentioned above, those suffering from arthritis might consider acupressure, acupuncture, aromatherapy, Ayurvedic medicine, Bach flower remedies, biological dentistry, hydrotherapy, light therapy, massage, meditation, oxygen therapy, ozone therapy, physical therapy, qi gong, tai chi, and vitamin drips. Combining a number of treatments is the best way to meet the unique needs of each patient.
What to Avoid
As mentioned previously, most any food, especially those eaten on an everyday basis, can cause an allergic response that produces arthritis. |
Include a B-complex supplement with approximately 150 mg of vitamin B6, 50 mg of B2, and 15 to 50 mg of Bl.
•Allergy Testing for Problem Foods...Since allergic responses to foods are a major cause of arthritis, skin and blood allergy tests, administered by a complementary physician, can be of value in that they reveal problem foods and chemicals. The foods to which people are highly sensitive must be completely eliminated, at least for a while. Later, some of them can be returned to the diet. |
Additionally, antioxidants also help: 5,000 to 10,000 mg vitamin C, 1,500 mgN.A.C, 500 mg alpha lipoic acid, 700 mg quercetin, 200 mg pycnogenol.
Periodontal Disease
Healthy gums are pink and do not bleed, but this is rarely seen. In fact, 90 percent of Americans suffer from gum conditions, the most common ones being gingivitis and periodontitis. Unfortunately, most periodontal disease goes largely unnoticed, as it progresses slowly and silently over a period of years. That's why it's vital to understand what gum disease is, how it develops, and how to prevent and treat it. |

Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba)
An extract of the leaves of this tree benefits the nervous system, the brain, the heart, and the arteries. It may even prevent stroke. In people who have experienced a stroke, ginkgo improves the functioning of nondamaged areas of the brain and helps ease depression, a common result of stroke. |
The vision vitamin also helps to keep breast ducts functioning properly and scavenges for damaging molecules called free radicals in breast tissue. Studies have shown its ability to reduce breast pain. Typical dosage: 15,000 IU daily. Caution: If you are pregnant, do not exceed 10,000 IU daily.
ž Isoflavones. These are the same compounds found in tofu and soy-based foods. They have the ability to protect breast tissue from the formation of tumors. Typical dosage: 20 to 40 milligrams daily (including 6 to 12 milligrams of genistein, one of the key isoflavones).

Honey contains as much as 40 percent fructose, a form of sugar that may speed the metabolism of alcohol and decrease the effects of a hangover. So if tea and toast is all your dicey stomach can handle, you can amply sweeten the tea with honey. High amounts of fructose can also be found in most fruits. |

Another expert-recommended home remedy for breast soreness is plain old vitamin E, which seems to be able to reduce the size and actual number of breast lumps. Dr. Kincheloe suggests taking 600 to 800 international units (IU) daily for 3 months to see if it helps. (You need to consult your doctor before taking more than 400 IU a day, though, since low-dose supplementation may increase risk of hemorrhagic stroke.)
There are also do-it-yourself herbal approaches to easing fibrocystic soreness. Dr. |

Amaranth greens rank at the top as a superior and easily digested source of calcium and iron; they're also rich in protein, beta carotene, and vitamin C.
Buying/Foraging/Harvesting You can find amaranth greens at an Asian greengrocer in late spring and early summer; they look like extra-large basil leaves but without serration. They can be oval or as narrow as mint.
If foraging or harvesting, collect the greens from the plant before it flowers. Gather the immature seed heads as they bud. |

INTERACTIONS
Some chlorella supplements may be rich in vitamin K and may affect the INR of those on warfarin. Animal studies suggest that certain substances in chlorella may ameliorate some of the side effects of 5-fluorouracil. There is no human documentation of this.
OVERDOSAGE
No reports of overdosage.
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION
There are various forms of chlorella, including capsules, tablets, softgels and granules. Most chlorella marketed in the U.S. is grown in Japan and Taiwan and is processed into the various supplemental forms. |

Likewise, those with vitamin K deficiencies, such as those with liver failure, should be cautious in using high doses of gamma-tocopherol. Gamma-tocopherol should be used with caution in those with lesions with a propensity to bleed (e.g., bleeding peptic ulcers), those with a history of hemorrhagic stroke and those with inherited bleeding disorders (e.g., hemophilia).
High dose gamma-tocopherol supplementation should be stopped about one month before surgical procedures and may be resumed following recovery from the procedure. |

This antioxidant, found in all red wine, is as active as the well-known antioxidant vitamin E, and perhaps even more so, says long-time flavonoid researcher Elliot Middleton, Jr., M.D., professor of medicine and pediatrics at the State University of New York at Buffalo.
Flavonoids also activate enzymes that actually neutralize cancer-causing substances, say experts. |
While all experts recognize coQi0 as important, some researchers believe that the nutrient should be promoted to vitamin status, because we may run into serious health problems if we don't have enough of it.
That's where the debate about the role of coQ10 starts.

Optimum levels for the full antioxidant effect are, however, thought by some experts actually to be much greater than the RDIs and so it may be wise to increase your intake of vitamin E-rich foods to offer optimum protection. A supplement may be of benefit (see page 146). In trials, supplements from 70 mg up to 540 mg per day have been used. |

Recommended amounts are given for each vitamin for adults. The FDA offers Reference Daily Intakes (RDIs) which were set in 1996 and which they say will be enough for the majority of the healthy US population. Some nutritionists believe that some of these levels have been set too high and so, for comparison, we include the EC's RDAs (recommended daily amounts) which are used in EC countries for the purposes of food labeling, and the UK RNIs. (Recommended amounts for children, pregnancy, and the elderly appear in Section Three. |
Oils high in monounsaturates are also often rich sources of the antioxidant vitamin E.
The FDA recommends that the remainder of the fatty acids in our diet not eaten as saturated or polyunsaturated or trans fats should be eaten as monounsaturated. However, for the sake of your heart, your circulation, and your general health it would probably be wise to replace more of the saturated and trans fats in the diet with monounsaturates, i.e. aim to eat less than 10% of total energy as saturates and more than 12% as monounsaturates. |

The flavonoids usually appear to be most potent in fruits or in sweet vegetables, probably because the sugars help the flavonoids to be absorbed. Providing the orange and yellow colors in citrus fruits (for example), the flavonoids are antioxidants and also help the absorption of vitamin C. The main discovery to date is that they seem to help prevent cancers, but different flavonoids have different roles.
Taxifolin and rutin are two important flavonoids in citrus fruits, including oranges and grapefruits. |
Deficiency can lead to megaloblastic anemia and, along with deficiencies of B6 and B12, can cause high levels of homocysteine, which is linked to coronary heart disease (see vitamin B6 on page 27). About 35% of the US is deficient in folate. Since January 1998 enriched bread, pasta, flour, cereal, crackers, and rice have been fortified with folate.
There are no known toxic effects of high levels, but they may hinder zinc absorption, and the FDA recommends no more than 1,000 pg per day. |

They also contain the enzyme thiaminase which destroys vitamin Bl in the body. Young bracken fern fronds must therefore be cooked (preferably in a change of water) and prepared as described above to eliminate the toxic principles.
The milk of cows grazing heavily on bracken fern is thought by some to be potentially toxic to humans due to the ptaquiloside.
Bracken fern fronds can also be toxic to livestock, who find them particularly palatable when young. |
