According to the NIH Consensus Conference report, the evidence for fracture prevention is as follows:
• Calcium supplements increase spine bone mineral density and reduce vertebral and nonvertebral fractures. vitamin D supplements reduce hip and other nonvertebral fractures.
• Bisphosphonates (alendronate, etidronate, risedronate) increase bone mineral density at the spine and hip and reduce the risk of vertebral fractures. Alendronate and risedronate reduce the risk of subsequent nonvertebral fractures.
• HRT decreases the risk of vertebral and nonvertebral fractures. |

The scientific advisory panel of the Alliance for Aging Research urged the government to include beta-carotene as a recommended daily vitamin.29 As a result, millions of bottles of beta-carotene supplements were sold and consumed. Millions of people increased their vegetable consumption to get the beta-carotene.
In April of 1994, the first randomized clinical trial of beta-carotene was completed in Finland. |

Alan and I sat in the sauna (with heat around 130 degrees, also for mobilization); drank lots of water; and took herbs, vitamin C, minerals, and nutrients to help the detoxification enzymes, such as zinc, manganese, selenium, and N-acetyl-cysteine. Every hour we had a ten-minute break, then did more skin brushing. After the sauna we had naturopathic hot and cold therapy along with electro-physiotherapy to heighten liver excretion and immune functioning.
Colonics were performed at the end of the day to help eliminate the chemicals out of the body. |
Biotransformation can be curtailed or altered by:
• a diet too low in protein
• a diet loaded with excessive carbohydrates
• vitamin and mineral deficiencies
• certain diseases of the thyroid, liver, kidneys, lungs, or gastrointestinal tract—such as chronic constipation, emphysema, or cirrhosis of the liver—that may promote toxic bioactivation and reduce the body's ability to clear itself of chemicals
You Need Bile and Guts
The liver is the most important organ of biotransformation, containing numerous enzymes that perform phase 1 and 2 functions. |
Thirty-four studies of the nutrient content of crops showed organic fertilization produces crops with higher levels of vitamin C, lower levels of nitrates, and better quality protein. Animal studies strongly showed superior reproduction and growth in animals fed organically grown feed compared to those who received conventionally grown feed.
Eating Organic Food, Even as Just a Portion of Your Diet, Can Have Positive Health Effects
If you live in a small town or isolated area that does not have a health-food store, call Diamond Organics at 800/922-2396. |
Raising chickens too quickly puts a strain on their internal organs, and the chickens then have to be treated with medications such as antibiotics (which are often masqueraded as vitamin mixes).
Try to buy organic chicken and turkey or natural free-range poultry at health food stores or co-ops. Eat more nonmeat proteins, such as tofu, tem-peh, or beans.
Fish
Fish has always been considered a healthy alternative to eating meat. However, if you want to eat fish that you catch, follow sport-fish-consumption guidelines. Certain restrictions apply to various locations. |
For example, too much vitamin A can be poisonous. As a corollary, conventional wisdom says that if a lot is bad, then less will be safer. Many of those who work in the field of risk assessment and toxicology are still guided by these old rules. However, the endocrine system responds to tiny quantities of hormone messengers: minute amounts of endocrine disruptors can elicit a response and cause changes. Frederick vom Saal, a noted scientist in the field, has a different perspective. |

C 39.0 and oxalic acid 5.0 mg/10 g; carotene 18 ug and cal val. 46 cal/100 g. Other minerals present are magnesium 20.0, sodium 34.7, potassium 37.0, copper 0.36, sulphur 20.0 and chlorine 13 mg/100 g.
The sour, unripe fruit improves digestion, increases appetite and relieves dyspepsia. It also acts as a uterine tonic.
The ripe fruit cools and soothes, reduces excessive gastric acid. It is both a digestive and diuretic tonic. Used as an adjuvant in gastric irritability, and as a cholagogue in jaundice. |
C 29.0 mg/100 g; carotene 153 mcg/100 g of edible matter. Iodine and fluorine contents of the gourd are 0.66 and 2.1 ppm on dry edible matter. A trace of 5-hydroxytryptamine has also been detected.
Trichosanthes dioica seeds fed at 1 g per cent level for eight weeks significantly lowered fasting blood sugar, total cholesterol and triglycerides and increased the level of phospholipids and HDL-cholesterol in male albino rats.
Not only the seeds, Trichosanthes dioica whole fruit and pulp were also found to exert the same activity. |
A, Bi, C and nicotinic acid; and 0.015 % volatile oil (n-alkanes and sesquiterpenes).
Seeds from India, Afghanistan and Pakistan contained 28.7-30.8 % protein and 5.5-6 % oil (dry weight.). Seeds yielded 14.1 % saponin.
Chronic administration of seed extract enhanced food consumption and motivation to eat in rats and also induced hyperinsulinemia and hypocholesterolaemia (Rastogi, Compendium 1998).
In rats, trigonelline counteracts the hypergly-caemic effect of cortisone given two hours before or simultaneously. Antiulcer activity has been studied in rats. |
C 6.0 mg/100 g. The value reported for carotene in the fresh rhizome is 40 mcg/100 g.
Ginger contains small quantities of glucose, fructose and sucrose; raffinose is probably present in traces. The principal carbohydrate of the rhizome is starch. Besides starch, the rhizomes are reported to contain pentosans.
The yield of oil from dry ginger varies from 1.5 to 3.0 % (average 2 %). The oil contains sesquiterpene hydrocarbons (50 % or more), sesquiterpene alcohols, monoterpenoids and associated compounds. |
C 76 mg/100 g. Presence of fluoride (0.1-0.2 ppm) is reported. Pectin content (as calcium pectate) is 2.2-3.4 % on moisture-free basis.
Fruit contains total sugars 5.4-10.5, reducing sugars 1.4-6.2, non-reducing sugars 3.2-8.0; and acidity (as citric acid) 0.2-1.1 %. Citric acid is the major acid in the fruit; malic and oxalic acids being present in small amounts.
The oil, extracted from seeds, contains oleic acid 71.7; linoleic acid 15.4; and saturated acid about 13.0 %.
Leaves contain crude protein 12.9-16.9; ether extr. (fat) 1.5-2.7; fibre 13.5-17.1; N-free extr. 55.3— 56. |
A, nicotinic acid 0.6 mg, riboflavin 50 meg and ascorbic acid 2 mg/100 g.
Figs owe their value chiefly to their mineral and sugar contents. The total mineral content is 2 to 4 times that of most other fresh foods; only cheese and a few of the nuts have a higher calcium content. Figs are richer in iron and copper than nearly all fruits and vegetables and most other dried fruits. Traces of zinc are also reported to be present.
The nutritive index of fig in comparison with that of other fruits is reported to be as follows: fig 11, apple 9, raisin 8, date 6 and pear 6. |

Although people often think that getting enough protein is a problem for vegetarians, it actually isn't. Vegetarians typically get plenty of protein. But there is another nutrient that can be an issue — Omega-3 fats. Getting enough of these essential fatty acids is crucial to optimum health, and can in fact be an issue for everyone today. |

Five are thyroid hormone replacement drugs and the sixth is a form of folic acid—an important vitamin that helps prevent birth defects. Another 205 drugs produced no birth defects or other abnormalities when tested in rabbits and rats.4 The manufacturers of these drugs note that these animal test results do not assure that they won't harm the human fetus. However, since it is unthinkable to recruit pregnant women to test the safety of these drugs, we are forced to make an assumption. Therefore, we can be comforted by the absence of evidence of harm in animal testing. |

Diseases of the past, like the vitamin C deficiency disease scurvy and typhoid fever, were associated with strange smells."
In adolescents, B.O. is a sign of puberty, when the apocrine glands are first activated. Aging and metabolic changes can also bring on increased apocrine activity. And the smell of certain pungent foods (like garlic) can ultimately work its way through your pores and into the nostrils of others.
Ihe secret to combating most body odors is to inhibit the body's production of apocrine sweat, decrease the number of bacteria acting upon that sweat or remove the offender. |

With the top 50 prescription drugs, consumers get chemicals subject to FDA-mandated rigorous testing, established purity, scientifically documented benefits, and reasonably well-known risks at least over the short term. The top 50 are the most popular drugs, the fruits of the most advanced medical scientists, and, compared to herbal remedies, thoroughly tested. Then why do they remain so dangerous? Why hasn't a free market, billions of dollars, and a flourishing science produced drugs without these troubling risks? |
Even the National Cancer Institute jumped on the beta-carotene bandwagon, declaring, "A large body of epidemiological evidence indicates that cancer incidence is reduced as consumption of dietary vitamin A or its precursor, beta-carotene, found in dark green and yellow vegetables and fruits, increases."26The National Cancer Institute limited its recommendations to urging greater consumption of fruit and vegetables. |

Buckwheat is full of rutin—the stuff one pays an arm and a leg for when buying vitamin pills. (I know women who examine themselves periodically for signs of visible broken veins or unsightly tiny, blue capillaries. As soon as they find anything like this they head for the buckwheat. Try it and see. If your doctor has varicose veins in his nose, tell him about buckwheat. Never let a doctor examine you without examining him just as carefully. Many of them need all the help one can offer.)

Sugar is not perfect, Stare admits. But, he continues, what food is, not even mother's milk.
Whose mother's milk is he talking about?
Sugar is a constant. Its lack of perfection as a food is total.
On any scale of nutrients, it would rate less than zero.
Mother's milk is as infinitely variable as life itself; it depends muchly—like the future of the human race— on the judgment each mother displays in her selection of food. |

Today, vitamin deficiency diseases have been largely prevented, but we face another type of dietary imbalance that can lead to disease: nutritional excesses, specifically excesses in fat and cholesterol. Although some fat and cholesterol are essential in the diet, a diet too rich in these substances has been linked to the development of coronary artery disease, this country's most serious and widespread health problem. However, the American Academy of Pediatrics cautions that parents should not go overboard in limiting fat in a child's diet. |
Swiss researchers have found that people with brittle fingernails who took small doses of the B vitamin biotin boosted the thickness of their nails by 25 percent. The group of people in the study received 2.5 milligrams of biotin a day for a six-month period. Biotin occurs naturally in such foods as cauliflower, lentils, milk, and peanut butter. Federal guidelines have not set an official recommended daily allowance for biotin.

Antibiotics. Tetracyclines used during the latter half of pregnancy may cause permanent discoloration of a child's teeth. From all studies to date, penicillin (including amoxicillin, ampicillin, and dicloxacillin) and erythromycin, as well as the cephalosporins, appear to have no adverse effects on pregnancy.

The skin also works at manufacturing vitamin D through a chemical reaction with ultraviolet rays in sunlight—a process that helps the body use calcium properly.
Like any other organ, the skin has specialized cells that perform a variety of tasks. Its three layers—the epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous fat—each play important roles in the skin's defensive and adaptive functions.
Epidermis. The outer layer is a very thin surface that measures, on average, a mere twenty cells thick. The first part of this tough outer, or horny, layer of skin consists of the stratum corneum. |
Pregnancy Alert: Congenital heart defects and mental retardation may be caused by excessively high doses of vitamin D taken during pregnancy.
Xylene
Xylene is a highly flammable, clear, colorless liquid with a sweet, pungent smell. It is an organic solvent, in the same chemical class (aromatic hydrocarbons) as toluene and benzene.
Sources of Exposure: Xylene is a constituent of paint, lacquers, varnishes, adhesives and cements, dyes, inks, and cleaning fluids. |
Beta-carotene, a form of vitamin A present in the yellow, orange, and red fruits and vegetables, seems to be an important retinoid that helps protect against cancer. Retinoids are thought to be cancer-protective compounds because they can neutralize the effect of unstable free-radical molecules, which are produced by chemical activity in the body and appear to set the stage for damage to the cell. Sources of these retinoids include carrots, spinach, tomatoes, apricots, cantaloupes, and peaches. |

However, many in the world of health advocacy concluded that if getting a little beta-carotene in vegetables seemed to be beneficial, then taking a vitamin supplement containing more of the chemical ought to be even bettet. The lack of clinical-trial evidence that taking this chemical was beneficial did not prevent many health advocates from recommending it. It was featured in best-selling health books such as Life Extension and Spontaneous Healing.17 Such advice was featured in more mainstream medical publications, such as the Wellness Letterof the University of California at Berkeley. |

A study of other mammals revealed that they produced substantial quantities of vitamin C, especially when they were under stress. These quantities, translated into human dimensions, meant that we needed grams of ascorbic acid. However, the National Academy of Sciences had declared that humans need only a tiny fraction of that amount—about 75 milligrams (thousandths of a gram) a day to remain healthy.
The reason for the glaring discrepancies between the conventional belief and Stone's is that it takes only milligrams to prevent the clinical signs of scurvy. |
