Aspartame (Nutrasweet) - Is It Safe?

H.J. Roberts, M.D.
See book keywords and concepts
Her studies included a CT scan of the brain, an EEG, a drug screen, and measurement of vitamin B12 and folate blood levels. The diagnosis of "idiopathic epilepsy" was made, and phenytoin (Dilantin®) prescribed. Surprised and puzzled by the episode, this nurse began researching a possible connection between aspartame and seizures in the hospital's medical library. She located two comparable case reports and several references. She also found that "diet" orange beverages tend to contain higher concentrations of aspartame—that is, up to 930 mg per liter (335 mg in 12 fluid ounces.
S'ltHl colorings, nitrites, nher ingredients, and vitamin uppirmenn FIGURE 2-1 FDA Consumer, October 1988, p. 17 Complaints received by the FDA were of particular interest. In 1985, the agency started a monitoring program to collect information about adverse reactions to food ingredients. Of 6,000 complaints received, 80% concerned aspartame. Figure 2-1 shows the findings in a dramatic manner. Were 4,800 individuals (80% of6,000 complaints) entirely wrong? Was this "anecdotal" information worthless? Not in my view. Something was amiss about aspartame and products containing it.
They include "delicious" penicillin and other antibiotic suspensions, chewable acetaminophen tablets for fever, and popular over-the-counter vitamin products. Exposure to Radiation A number of children with aspartame reactions were exposed to considerable diagnostic radiation before intolerance to aspartame products was recognized. These studies included x-rays of the stomach, small intestine and large bowel for suspected peptic ulcer, Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, and a gamut of radiologic examinations for suspected diseases of the brain and spinal cord . . .

Paul Winter—Enlivened by Music Randy Lee Showstack For Paul Winter, music is vitamin M. It recharges him. It makes his spirit vibrate. "When you start to lose it," says this veteran soprano saxophonist, "make some music." His music is a vibrant embrace of nature. The deep and jumpy sounds blown through the hollow of his sax are contagious and uplifting, meditative without being drowsy or wishy-washy. His ten albums, recorded either solo or with the ever-shifting Paul Winter Consort, include "Common Ground," "Callings," "Missa Gaia," and the recent "Sunsinger.

So here is another example of our environment, in litis case selenium and vitamin E supplements, proving themselves able to control "bad genes." Dr. Raymond Shamberger was also among the first to discover the link between low selenium content in the soil and increasing numbers of deaths from cancer. In 1976, he pointed out that the cities and states with high selenium content in the soil also had significantly lower rates of cancer, especially of the digestive and urinary systems.

Zinc Zinc is a mineral that is required in very small amounts by the human body Zinc plays a crucial role in the formation of powerful antioxidants, especially vitamin A. (425,443) An adequate intake of zinc is necessary to prevent a variety of diseases, including, according to the latest research, cancer. There are now almost 3,000 articles documenting the relationship of zinc to cancer. Some show that a lack of zinc in the diet is associated with higher rates of cancer.
In a now famous experiment, zinc supplements (given together with vitamin A) had a profound effect on the death rate from cancers of the esophagus and stomach, as well as cancers in general. Some laboratory experiments have suggested that zinc has an anticancer role. For example, when scientists gave the carcinogenic mineral cadmium to rats, they developed cancer in their testes. But a lack of zinc in the diet increased the rate at which such cancer developed. NCI scientists concluded that "dietary zinc deficiency appears to cause a generalized increase in the chronic toxic effects of cadmium.

Supposedly, the vitamin undoes the effects of the drug. This position is mainly dictated by theory. However, there are hints in the literature that small doses of folic acid counteract the toxicity of methotrexate without impairing its effectiveness. Further research will be necessary to reach a conclusion. Methotrexate was one of the first chemotherapeutic agents. More than 50 years ago, Dr. Sidney Farber of Boston tried to use folic acid as a treatment for leukemia. Instead of curing the children, however, it was his impression that folic acid actually accelerated the growth of the cancer.

Early research with elderly people in nursing homes unearthed a hidden epidemic of vitamin D deficiency among people who don't get outdoors regularly. These studies found that indoor light, with its lack of ultraviolet radiation, significantly impairs the intestine's ability to absorb calcium, no matter what diet a patient is on. This results in tooth and bone loss and, if a fall should occur, bone fracture and crippling. ¦ Fluorescent lights may be particularly harmful.
As the situation currently stands, irradiated food is not safe for many reasons: (1) the food cannot be eaten for 24 hours, to allow for radioactive decay; (2) irradiation requires chemical additives; (3) the procedure causes vitamin losses; and (4) there is little evidence presently available concerning the effects of irradiation If you see this symbol on food in your supermarket, beware! It means the food has been irradiated to preserve it. Many questions remain about the safety of irradiated food—pass it by in favor of fresh goods.

Campbell's clandestine document17 made four main charges: 1) PH attacked AZT therapy, advocating instead "vitamin pills and quack cures"; 2) PH promoted "worthless and/or unproven quack cures and remedies"; 3) the "fundamental philosophy of PH ... is psychologically extremely ,7Duncan Campbell, "Positively Healthy" (a privately circulated, 6-page document), dated 13 August 1991 and 15 August 1991. damaging to patients"; and 4) PH promoted and sold nutritional supplements, some being "demonstrably dangerous".
Campbell's obsession with vitamin pills is particularly absurd. All PH did was to organize a buyers club in order to offer high-quality, high-potency nutritional supplements known as "Imu-Power Packs", which they sell at about $1.70 per day, which is slightly above the wholesale cost. One could debate the benefits of the many components of the Imu-Power Packs, but there is nothing in them that is harmful, and they are not expensive relative to ordinary medicines (or the price of a beer or package of cigarettes).

So if you're going to be outside longer than that, especially during the summer months, take extra precautions. Stay in the shade as much as possible. Wear lightweight clothing that covers as much skin as possible, as well as a wide-brimmed hat, which is especially good for protecting your face and neck. And above all else, use sunscreen.

But there are some real superstars in the produce department—because of their high fiber and/or vitamin content, you'd do well to make them regulars in your diet. Here are some or the very best: >• Vegetables: spinach, collard greens, and kale; sweet potato or potato (baked, with the skin); acorn or butternut squash; and broccoli and asparagus. >¦ Fruits: watermelon, papaya, cantaloupe, mango, orange, grapefruit, banana, honeydew melon, and strawberries. Keep in mind that fresh or frozen food always beats canned.
Citrus and orange fruits (for example, cantaloupe, apricots, peaches, and oranges) and orange or green-leafy vegetables (sweet potatoes, broccoli, kale, carrots) are the richest in carotenes and vitamin C. Cabbage-family vegetables (including broccoli, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts) have other constituents that might prevent cancer. ž Use cooked barley or bulgur instead of rice in pilafs, stuffings, soups, and stews. ž Substitute whole-wheat or spinach pasta for regular. ž Add wheat bran, wheat germ, or berries to cereals and pancake, waffle, or muffin batters.
Animal studies suggest that the fiber, beta-carotene, and vitamin C in these foods all may protect against cancer. The National Cancer Institute recommends doubling or tripling daily fiber intake from 10 grams to 20 or 30 grams. Fiber-rich foods include canned or cooked dried beans and peas (such as black, kidney, pinto, navy, great northern, and garbanzo beans; split and black-eyed peas; and lentils), whole-grain breads and cereals, and vegetables and fruits. How to boost your fiber: ž Add garbanzo beans to salads. Try vegetarian chili, and lentil, split pea, or other bean soups.

Physicians always feel guilty when their treatments cause new, sometimes worse problems. I hadn't started Maura on Prozac but had maintained her on it for a year. Had Prozac really caused the tics? I asked myself.
John's wort feels more like taking a vitamin." Occasionally, patients report having an upset stomach after a dose. This is easily remedied by taking it with food rather than on an empty stomach. Patients should not mix St. John's wort with prescription antidepressants because of potential adverse interactions. The effectiveness of St. John's wort has been demonstrated in numerous clinical studies. As with synthetic drugs, these are short, typically four-to-eight-week, studies in which one group of patients receives St. John's wort while another group receives placebo pills.

It is just below these bowel tolerance levels, the experts say, that vitamin C has its most powerful therapeutic effect. There have been accounts in the medical literature of occasional minor skin rashes associated with DMSO. Because MSM is a related substance, the potential for a similar reaction also exists. Again, reducing dosage usually takes care of the problem. If it does not, than stop the MSM and try to resume it again in a few days but at a reduced level. If you develop a rash again, you should probably discontinue taking the supplement.
