In addition to the daily basic vitamin, and mineral, nutrient intake, additional nutrients are beneficial. L-glutamine, deglycyrrhized licorice (DGL), and N-acetyl-glucosamine (NAG) particularly benefit the bowel lining cells. L-glutamine serves as the main source of energy for the cells when there is any increased stress to the bowel, such as irritation from the foods and drugs discussed above. DGL speeds the growth and promotes the longevity of the cells that line the gut. NAG improves the production of the critical protective mucous layer that is secreted by the lining cells. |

Retinoid
A family of compounds similar to vitamin A. Saponins
Plant chemicals commonly found in legumes and other plants that are associated with reducing tumor growth and abnormal growth of cells in the colon. They are similar in structure to cholesterol. Yet they have been found to bind cholesterol and reduce its absorption.
Scirrhous carcinoma
A cancer that arises in the ducts of the female breast. Scirrhous cancer is known by a stony hard tumor and accounts for over 75 percent of breast cancer. |

A metallic element associated with decreased risk of cancers. Simple carbohydrates
Smaller-sized sugars, as in sucrose, that are often added in great amounts to processed food. High-sugar diets are a risk factor for heart disease.
Singlet oxygen
An activated form of oxygen that is more reactive and toxic. Beta carotene takes the punch out of the toxicity of singlet oxygen.
Skin cancer
A cancerous growth that arises from the two layers of the skin, the dermis and epidermis. |
However, it seems that vitamin C protects from some of the toxicity associated with acetaldehyde.
There is ample data to show that alcoholic beverages can cause cancer. Keep in mind that many alcoholic beverages are complex mixtures that contain potent toxic chemicals other than alcohol. Nitrates contained in beer and scotch are known to be converted into potent carcinogens. If you drink, choose red wine.
There is no doubt that alcohol exerts its toxicity by the combined effects of malnutrition and production of the highly toxic acetaldehyde. |

Beta carotene
Beta carotene is part of a family of plant pigments that result in the yellow, orange, and red colors of fruits and vegetables. Though over
600 carotenoids have been identified in nature, beta carotene is one of the most abundant carotenoids found in human foods. As such, it plays an important role in cancer prevention. |

He also notes that very high levels of ingestion of vitamin C can suppress the absorption of copper and that high levels of zinc ingestion (100-300 mg per day) can raise LDL and lower HDL levels.
In response to those who recommend relying entirely on getting people to change their diet, Johnson says that experienced clinicians know that people rarely change their dietary habits; therefore, this approach is "likely to be the least acceptable, or possible, or successful for many high-risk individuals" [98]. |
Furthermore, the vitamin E supplements appeared to protect against prostate cancer (down 34 percent) and colorectal cancer (down 16 percent). The people who got lung cancer tended to be those who also drank more heavily. The researchers concluded that longer, even lifetime, supplementation will be needed to combat such a slowly developing process as cancer. |
Recall from part i that glutathione is the main antioxidant inside the cells of the brain, while vitamin C is the main antioxidant in the watery fluid between the cells.) Hydrogen peroxide also interferes with the storage of dopamine inside the cells in the substantia nigra [48]. Dopamine inside its storage vesicles is protected by antioxidants from oxidation; but dopamine outside these vesicles is more liable to oxidation, because in this locus it has less antioxidant protection. |
This level will do them no harm if some elementary precautions, relating to vitamin K and hemorraghic stroke (see part 3), are followed.
PARKINSON'S DISEASE. Parkinson's disease is caused by the destruction of certain nerve cells in a part of the brain called the substantia nigra (or "black substance," so called because these nerve cells contain large amounts of the black pigment neuromelanin). These cells use a chemical called dopamine as their neurotransmitter. |

SPINAL DISORDERS
All spinal cord diseases are dangerous and potentially lethal. A complete neurologic exam, radiographs, and even magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are employed to differentiate various problems. Weakness in the hind limbs may indicate arthritis of the spine and hips, disc herniation, neoplasms, spinal embolism, metabolic or endocrine abnormalities, and degenerative myelopathy. |

Symptoms of Warfarin Overdose
There may be no early warning signs of danger. Blood tests are essential. Symptoms include any unusual bleeding, including rectal or urinary tract bleeding, excessive menstrual bleeding, nosebleeds, bleeding around gums, bruising, red or tar-black stools, vomiting blood, and red or dark-brown urine. Notify your doctor immediately if you suspect a problem.
Never take or stop medication without your doctor's advice. |

Synthetic estrogen increases the need for vitamin E, the element so vital to proper sexual functioning. Premarin, billed as a "natural" form of estrogen (it is collected from the urine of mares), can cause dangerous blood clots, just as the synthetic forms can.8 The human body has its own ecology. We have seen the results of indiscriminate addition of manmade chemicals to our natural environment. Coumadin
GENERIC NAME warfarin
DESCRIPTION
Warfarin slows the liver's production of factors essential for the formation of blood clots. It is prescribed when there is a risk that a dangerous clot could form in a deep vein or a blood vessel leading to the lungs, heart, or brain. The most serious complication of anticoagulant treatment is excessive bleeding. |
