Because the vitamin acts as a blood thinner, consult your doctor before beginning supplementation in any amount if you're already taking aspirin or a blood-thinning medication such as warfarin (Coumadin), or if you're at high risk for stroke. |
You can use it as often and for as long as needed, but as with vitamin E oil, do not use it on broken skin.
Fast Relief from the Aches and Pains of
Bursitis and Tendinitis
These two conditions are the Purple Hearts of weekend warriors. Bursitis is inflammation of a bursa, a fluid-filled sac that provides padding between a muscle and the bony projection of a joint, such as a shoulder, hip, or knee.
Tendinitis is inflammation of a tendon, which connects muscle to bone. (Think of the Achilles tendon, which connects your calf muscle to your heel bone. |

We also acknowledge that other factors may play key roles in MS, including excessive oxidative stress from vitamin E, glutathione, CoQ10 deficiencies, and increased intestinal permeability. To our knowledge, only one group has investigated intestinal permeability in MS. They found that 25 percent of the MS patients they investigated had increased intestinal permeability. This increase may simply allow gluten proteins to leak into the bloodstream. As we established in an earlier chapter, these proteins have been shown to injure a variety of human tissues. |
MacDougall not only experienced a dramatic recovery but also went on to write about his recovery and the means by which he achieved it in a pamphlet published by Regenics, Inc., a vitamin company with offices in the United Kingdom and United States.
Four years after his own diagnosis of multiple sclerosis, Scottish biochemist Norman Matheson, Ph.D., was inspired by MacDougall. Although not as debilitated as MacDougall, Dr. Matheson experienced a speedy recovery as a result of a gluten-free diet. His report appeared in the October 5, 1974, issue of Lancet. |
If we are gluten sensitive or have celiac disease, even if religiously pursuing a gluten-free diet, we may need to take aggressive action, supplementing magnesium and ensuring adequate vitamin D intake or absorption.
If you have a personal history of osteoporosis or osteopenia, periodic bone-density tests should be done to assure that your gluten-free diet and supplementation program are working optimally for you.
BACK TO THE FUTURE
Gluten and dairy products are two of the most allergenic foods in our food supply. |
Be aware also that vitamin B12 deficiency coexists in about 15 percent of children with iron deficiency and that cow's milk allergy is another extremely common cause of blood-loss iron deficiency in children. All these factors have to be monitored and effectively treated. |

Pantothenic acid, a B vitamin, also helps boost adrenal function, says Dr. Rothfeld. He recommends 200 to 500 milligrams a day.
Natural Treatments May Delay
Alzheimer's Disease f you're diagnosed with Alzheimer's—the brain disease that slowly but surely devastates mental, emotional, and, finally, even physical functioning—most conventional neurologists will offer you two treatments.
One is the prescription drug donepezil (Aricept), which increases levels of acetylcholine, a brain chemical responsible for memory. |
Carrow believes that the tocotrienols are 30 to 60 times more powerful than tocopherol-containing vitamin E, making the nutrient one of the best ways to treat and reverse angina.
Tocotrienols, he explains, are thought to act like a blood-thinning drug. They help stop the formation of blood clots at the spot where an artery is clogged—the usual cause of heart attacks in people with angina.
Dr. Carrow advises his angina patients to take 50 milligrams of mixed tocotrienols (a product that includes forms of tocotrienol called alpha, beta, delta, and gamma) three times a day. |
To beat the infection, he recommends a daily dose of 1,000 to 4,000 milligrams of vitamin C, 300 to 600 milligrams of bioflavonoids, and 50,000

Linus Pauling on vitamin C, and the research of other nutritional pioneers. I also met and learned from physicians like Dr. William Currier, who had actually given up a conventional medical practice to specialize in nutritional medicine.
As I spoke to my colleagues at the hospital about these remarkable nutritional therapies, I was astounded at their indifference. If the treatment being discussed wasn't a surgical procedure or a pharmaceutical drug, nobody wanted to hear about it. |

By the time they have nourished their babies in the womb for nine months, then breast-fed their child for several months, their mineral and vitamin stores are so depleted that fatigue, depression, and a host of other symptoms dog their steps.
Postpartum depression often sets in shortly after mother returns home from the hospital, and it is all she can do to care for the baby, let alone feel the normal maternal love. Deficiencies in certain minerals can trigger these feelings. For example, the hormones estrogen, progesterone, and oxytocin play a role in maternal bonding. |
Offer fresh fruit or homemade applesauce, along with their vitamin and mineral supplement. My children are occasionally allowed to eat breakfast cereals that contain no more than three grams of sugar per serving.
If they are a little hungrier (and you've gotten up on time), prepare fresh oatmeal with fresh or home-frozen fruit. You may also enjoy making crepes and stuffing them with fresh fruit or unsweetened frozen fruit. Whole-wheat crepes are also delicious with fruit-only jam. |
If your child is struggling with behavior or mood disorders, you may wish to consult a nutritionally oriented physician or a clinical nutritionist about a vitamin B complex, magnesium, zinc, antioxidant nutrients, iron, and essential fatty acids (fish oil, flaxseed oil, or a combination of EPA/DHA). wheat toast, salmon hash, or brown rice pudding. We cannot, however, isolate one or another mineral or vitamin and believe that represents the entire story. Nutrient deficiencies never occur in singles. Nurrients are bound rogerher in nature, working in synergy and balance. Stimulating nutrients like calcium and sodium are blended with calming nutrients like magnesium and potassium to give the body and brain a sort of peaceful energy, purposeful vigor, and calm attentiveness.
In natural food, potassium is typically about 2.5 times higher than sodium or more, emphasizing its importance in the body. |

The Whole Body Needs Healthy Foods
Good physicians who treat fracture cases, especially doctors who are nutrition and health-minded make sure that every possible measure is taken to promote the finest nutrition possible to mend and build new bone cells.
The cells in our skin, including the hair-building cells, need continual healthy nourishment. This becomes more evident and compelling when we remember that skin is constantly being shed and replaced, and that hair grows continuously - day and night, year after year. |

This is not like taking something relatively innocuous like vitamin C. Though I discuss the benefits of DHEA, I want to emphasize that it should only be taken under monitored conditions. DHEA levels should be checked and the health care professional recommending its usage should be knowledgeable and have experience with prescribing DHEA. When it is used appropriately, DHEA is very safe. I feel in the near future we are going to see negative side effects of DHEA as a result of people taking excessive doses without the proper guidance from a health care practitioner. |
Adding in vitamin C 5,000-10,000mg per day along with Taurine 500mg twice per day, will help. Finally, I have found that glutathione, given as an intravenous injection once per week, can rejuvenate the enzymes in the liver necessary for detoxification.
There are many items that are helpful for a liver flush. Listing them all is beyond the scope of this book. I caution the reader to work with a skilled health care practitioner when instituting a liver flush. You will get the best results when someone is there to guide you.
Final Thoughts
The idea of detoxification can seem daunting. |
Supplements helpful in the detoxification process include: cilantro, vitamin C, selenium, garlic and others.
3. Improving The Diet
Eating a clean diet, free of pesticides and hormones, is a must for a detoxification program. I encourage my patients to eat whole foods, with adequate amounts of protein. Eliminating the "whites"-- refined sugar, refined flour, and refined salt?will help any health condition and help any detoxification program.

Melatonin has been found to be a much more potent antioxidant than either vitamin C or E.4
Melatonin has also shown promise as a possible treatment for cancer. A study was conducted observing the effects of daily injections of melatonin given to 54 patients with advanced colon cancer. After two months, the results showed that melatonin appeared to delay the progression of cancer in 44% of the cases. In addition, other studies have shown melatonin can increase life expectancy and improve the quality of life in patients with gastric cancer, lung cancer, breast cancer and metastatic brain cancer. |

MEDICAL CONDITIONS THAT PROMOTE NEURODEGENERATION
Alzheimer's disease is the medical condition most frequently associated with damage to or degeneration of the brain, with resulting cognitive dysfunction. However, there are several other common medical conditions not generally associated with the brain that are known to increase the risk of memory loss and dementia. |

I also gave her a vitamin B12 injection and continued giving her twice-a-week injections for the next month.
When Sally and her daughter returned a month later, I looked into the eyes of a different woman. She was alert, smiling, and made pleasant small talk. Her daughter said that her mother's mood and memory were so much improved that they were no longer considering a nursing home. I did nothing heroic in Sally's care. I simply identified and treated underlying nutritional deficiencies.

Today we know that vitamin C deficiency in the diet leads to scurvy, an ancient, often-lethal condition marked by skin lesions, bloody vomiting, and death. But this was not clear to the nations of Western Europe when, from the 1400s on, they launched their sailing ships across the seas. Without adequate rations of fruits and vegetables, missions lost large numbers of crewmen to scurvy. No one knew the cause.
Finally, in 1747, an English naval surgeon named James Lind tested six remedies on sailors and discovered that oranges and lemons delivered a cure. |
For these patients, already following a Mediterranean-style diet, the GISSI team found that vitamin E did not affect the outcome. But overwhelmingly, the researchers found, omega-3 fatty acids lowered risk for fatal as well as nonfatal heart attacks and stroke. Impressively, omega-3 fatty acid supplements decreased the risk of death from myocardial infarction some 30 percent. This study replicated the results of previous well-designed studies, firmly establishing the lifesaving qualities of the omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil. |
Like vitamin C, calcium, and a host of other essential nutrients not manufactured by the body, most polyunsaturated acids must be consumed as a regular part of the diet for us to thrive. Most fats, of course, are manufactured by the body, as anyone on a weight-loss program is likely to learn. Eat too much protein or carbohydrate and your body will all too readily convert these nutrients for storage as fat. For many years, nutritionists thought that polyunsaturated fats were created in the body as well. But in 1929, George M. Burr and Mildred M. |
Scientists would not discover the vitamin C molecule (ascorbic acid) itself until 1932, when Charles Glenn King and W. A. Waugh of the University of Pittsburgh isolated the crystalline substance from lemon juice.
Unlike scurvy, the problems resulting from omega-3 fatty acid deficiency are more subtle and relatively new in human history, having emerged in force only in the past hundred years or so. The symptoms of omega-3 deficiency appear to be diverse and, in the case of the psychiatric disorders, so insidious that it may take medical science decades to pin them all down. |
