Even with enough vitamin and mineral supplements, you may still lose about 5 percent of your bone density in the first six months of nursing. Imagine how much more that would be without nutritional supplementation. Happily, this bone loss begins to be restored twelve months after delivery. Whether nursing beyond nine months causes any permanent loss of bone density is still being debated, but I do not believe there is enough evidence at the present time to justify your stopping breast-feeding after nine months unless you wish to do so. |

The Role of Iron
After the wrong kind of fat, the nutrient most likely to cause rather than prevent infectious disease is iron. Iron is unique among essential minerals, because there is no mechanism for its excretion once it is absorbed into the body. Whatever iron is absorbed must be either used or stored, and excessive storage of iron in the body promotes the generation of free radicals. |
There are many different causes of anemia, which include folic acid deficiency, vitamin B12 deficiency, disorders of the bone marrow, and conditions that increase the rate at which red blood cells are broken down in the spleen. Iron deficiency, when mild, may not produce anemia but may still cause fatigue, immune defects, or fungal infections of skin.81 There are probably twenty million people in the United States who are iron-deficient, and half of them are not anemic. Women with chronic fatigue and mild iron deficiency who are not anemic improve their energy after taking low doses of iron. |

For maximum effectiveness, lecithin may be taken with vitamin B5, and also with the nutrient DMAE.
DMAE, however, may be somewhat stimulating for many people, and it should not be taken by people with bipolar, or "manic," depression, because it can exacerbate the depressive phase of the cycle.
Phosphatidyl choline can be ingested not only by taking lecithin, but also by taking choline bitartrate or choline chloride. Both of these nutrients, though, can create a slightly "fishy" odor, and occasionally cause diarrhea.

DMAE produces acetylcholine when it is combined with phosphatidyl choline (derived from lecithin), and vitamin B5. In some patients, it has generated effects that were almost as striking as those elicited by potent pharmaceutical drugs such as tacrine.
DMAE definitely increases memory—particularly short-term memory, which is very dependent upon adequate levels of acetylcholine. It also elevates concentration and learning ability.

Magnesium is also a powerful free-radical scavenger, helps increase the antioxidative power of vitamin E, and promotes circulation by deterring blood clotting and decreasing blood pressure. A study in Europe indicated that low intake of magnesium increased risk of sudden death from heart attack by about 50 percent.
An appropriate daily dosage to achieve brain longevity is 200 to 300 mg. If magnesium is taken in very high dosages (600 to 700 mg), it sometimes causes diarrhea.
