There are three groups of vitamin K compounds: phylloquinone (Kl), found in green plants; menaquinones (K2), produced by intestinal bacteria; and menadione (K3), a synthetic form. The molecular weight of the naphthoquinone is 173.2. APPENDIX B Acronyms and Abbreviations There are many abbreviations that are used in discussing the politics and technicalities of food fats and oils as well as the biology and health aspects of lipids. This list of acronyms should be useful as you read this and other books that deal with these topics.
In addition to the data for total fat, total saturated fatty acids, total monounsaturated fatty acids, and total polyunsaturated fatty acids, the tables include composition data for cholesterol, vitamin E, lauric acid, total omega-3 fatty acids, and total omega-6 fatty acids. The reader will learn that lipids in the body are important parts of cell membranes, are necessary as vitamin carriers, play a pivotal role in producing satiety, form the necessary protective padding for organs, provide efficient energy storage, function as enzyme regulators, are important as hormone precursors, and are necessary for emulsification functions. Some of the lipids required for these functions can be made by many different cells in the body "from scratch" using carbohydrate or excess protein.

The idea that raw fruit and vegetable juices are a particular aid to health arose several decades ago in connection with vitamin research, but that theory has now been discredited. Many vegetables are relatively low-carbohydrate foods, but fruits definitely are not. The USDA Food Pyramid that advocates eating five to nine servings of fruits and vegetables a day is dangerously imprudent. We maintain that fruits and vegetables and their juices do not carry the same health benefits as fat and protein foods.

Finally, it is harder to assimilate vitamin K, circulatory disorders result, and endocrine imbalances occur.. . At the present time, the heavy metal miasm is cross-indexed with other miasms. For instance, radioactive isotopes often latch onto heavy metals. The contents of this miasm include lead, mercury, radium, arsenic, sulphuric acid, carbon, aluminum, and fluoride. The symptom picture of this developing miasm includes allergies especially from petrochemicals, excessive hair loss, excessive fluid retention, inability to assimilate calcium, and susceptibility to viral inflammations.
Albert Szent-Gyorgyi, the discoverer of vitamin C, is exploring the implications of the bioelectronic model in understanding cancer. Szent-Gyorgi feels that the problem with cancer is not that cells are replicating themselves, since replication is natural. The abnormality of cancer cells may lie within faulty electronic switching mechanisms which cannot turn off the replicating process. The mouse melanoma experiments suggest that electrical currents and electromagnetic fields may be able to manipulate these abnormal electronic switching mechanisms in an energetic approach to treating cancer.
Morever, it facilitates the ingestion of vitamin A. Since the psychic qualities in the eyes are strengthened, telepathic and clairvoyant vision is stimulated. The eyes are the physical vehicle involved in clairvoyantly seeing auras and nature spirits.16 The issue of aligning the subtle bodies and chakras in order to attain meaningful insight is a pervasive one throughout Gurudas' book. It becomes quite clear by the end of the book that the personality and its physical body are unable to reach harmony and inner balance unless true alignment of the spiritual with the physical vehicle occurs.

Many published charts on vitamin and mineral supplies in foods are designed in a way that does not show animal foods to have large amounts of these vital nutrients. This is one way that people are led to believe that animal foods do not offer much in the way of these nutrients. Why is this done? Could it be in order to perpetuate the myths of low-fat, low-meat diets?
However, it is important to remember that calcium is absorbed into the body better in the presence of vitamin D (which is not in these vegetables), and that even if calcium-rich foods are consumed, a body heavy on the catabolic side will have difficulty in using the calcium to maintain and build bones, teeth, and nails. Figure 9.1 presents data from some of Dr. Lutz's patients who adopted a low-carbohydrate diet. As you can see, calcium levels began to rise after a month on the diet and then leveled off at three months. No supplements were needed to accomplish this.
Calcium is absorbed into the body with the help of vitamin D, which is primarily found in animal foods. Instead of recommending that people drink more whole milk, eat more cheese, and avoid grains, our health professionals prefer to prescribe calcium supplements. Wouldn't it be better to eat the foods that actually supply the nutrients our bodies need? People who are lactose intolerant should choose milk products that contain no lactose, such as cheese and cottage cheese. Fermented milk products are often easy to tolerate because the lactose has been converted to lactic acid by bacteria.

Another study reported results on the combination of piracetam with choline (a B-complex vitamin relative discussed in Steps 2 and 4), which was administered to ten patients with Alzheimer's disease for seven days. Although not all patients benefited from this protocol, three of the ten patients had remarkable enhancements, with a 70-percent improvement on tests of verbal memory after taking piracetam. An interesting aspect of piracetam's mode of action is that it improves communication across the corpus callosum, which connects the two hemispheres of the brain.

There are those who swear that vitamin Ev does the trick for them; a number of women benefit from antidepressants, hormone manipulation, or herbal preparations. Since PMS manifests physical, emotional, and behavioral symptoms (singly and in combination), it may in fact be several different entities. That would explain why a particular treatment is effective in some women and not in others. If your PMS symptoms require relief, discuss their management with your doctor, and do try all the various regimens suggested until you find one that works for you. But don't count on it.

In the course of my nearly thirty years as a holistic physician, the combination of vitamin C and Kali mur 6x has become for my patients the equivalent of "Take two aspirin, go to bed, and call me in the morning." Mostly they don't call, and if they do, they're almost always a lot better. 3. Calc sulph 6x. The tissue salt used when there is yellow mucus. This corresponds to the third stage of inflammation, where the process has settled in and there are signs of dead white cells that have come into the site to clean up and to combat any microbes that may be growing in the inflamed tissue.

Either borage oil or blackcurrant oil (1000 milligrams, usually taken as two 500-milligram capsules) or evening primrose oil (three 1300-milligram capsules) 3. vitamin E, 400 IUs, or 100 IUs for people with high blood pressure It usually takes several weeks for benefits to be seen. Flax oil may cause loose stools, which usually abate after a few days. These natural oils reduce inflammation, while animal fats and frying oils sometimes aggravate inflammation and should be eliminated.
Some varieties, including Red Star Nutritional Yeast, are good sources of vitamin B12. • Reduce salt used in cooking by replacing it with herbs, spices, and other seasonings. A wide variety of salt-free seasoning mixes is available in supermarkets and natural food stores. • Most baking powder is high in sodium. A few low-sodium varieties, including Featherweight, are available in natural food stores and some supermarkets. Another time he ate dandelion leaves plucked right from the plant, called them "salad greens," and talked about vitamin C. We thought he had strange tastes. Mainly I hoped he didn't behave like this in front of friends. This was the era when my school friends were moving to the newly built suburbs with color-coded, split-level houses and grass-perfect American lawns. Now I am not so naive to reclaim poison ivy along with wild mint and dandelions.

For more than a decade, alternative physicians have used monolaurin to treat chronic fatigue syndrome, infections related to Epstein-Barr virus and herpes I and II virus, and flu-like symptoms with some success, in combination with high doses of vitamin C. Monolaurin is now available for consumers in natural food stores and through mail order. It is not a supplement for daily use but should be reserved for those times when you are experiencing cold and flu symptoms.
Scientists compared the blood levels of vitamin E and carotenoids in men who chewed or smoked tobacco with blood levels in those who abstained from tobacco products. Tobacco users had significantly lower levels of cryptoxanthin than those who were tobacco free, which suggests that they should either eat more cryptoxanthin-rich foods or take a carotenoid supplement with cryptoxanthin. (Of course, they should also quit smoking!) Considering that nearly half of all Americans do not eat even one serving of fruit a day, it's a good idea to include this supplement in your daily regimen.
Take up to 500 mg. vitamin C complex.) Boswellia Facts Boswellia is one ol'scvcral ancient herbal remedies that is now on the cutting edge of alternative medicine. Used for thousands of years in the Ayurvedic medical system in India, boswellia is being rediscovered as a treatment for osteoarthritis (so-called "wear-and-tear" arthritis) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA), an autoimmune disorder that causes the destruction of cartilage, the protective covering that cushions bones. Rheumatoid arthritis can cause pain and swelling in the joints and, in severe cases, can be debilitating.
One group took only the vitamin D, a second group also took 1000 mg. daily of calcium gluconate, and a third group took 1000 mg. daily of hydroxyapatite. At the end of 14 months, only the group that took the hydroxyapatite showed improvement; in fact, they experienced a significant increase in bone thickness. Supplements are not the only way to preserve bone. Weight-bearing exercise can help build bone and reduce bone loss.
Several people have told me that these green tea products can help reduce minor irritation caused by some of the antiaging skin care products (such as AHAs, BHAs, retinol, and vitamin C cream) that work below the top layers of skin. KlNETIN Kinetin, a growth hormone extracted from plants, is being used in skin creams and gels. In test tube studies, kinetin has been shown to extend the life of human skin fibroblasts, which are believed to be instrumental in skin aging. Fibroblasts produce collagen and elastin, which are important for maintaining the texture and tone of skin.
If your diet is very low in fat, you are probably not getting enough vitamin A. Take one 5000-IU capsule daily. L-Arginine This Hot 100 amino acid is involved in nitric oxide production, which is essential for erections. Men who use it report that they have stronger and longer-lasting erections. (For more information, see page 3.) For best results, take 3 to 6 grams of L-arginine on an empty stomach 45 minutes before having sex. Diets that are relatively low in vitamin C, zinc, magnesium, or selenium predispose to wheezing, bronchitis, and respiratory complaints.48 The association between nutritional deficiency and asthma means that rational nutritional therapy can improve your condition. Asthmatic patients studied in England, New Zealand, and Sweden have shown reduced selenium levels in blood or decreased activity of selenium-dependent antioxidant enzymes in their blood cells.49 Dietary supplementation with selenium improves their antioxidant enzyme levels and asthmatic symptoms.

Beta-carotene, an antioxidant, maintains normal levels of vitamin A in experimental animals and may also do so in humans. If you're at high risk for lung cancer for whatever reason—because you smoke or were exposed to airborne asbestos, or work in milling, mining, textiles, insulation, or cement manufacturing, or if you had too much radiation from your dentist or doctor before its harmful effects were fully appreciated—get enough beta-carotene in your diet in the form of food, not supplements.

They are loaded with a variety of bioflavonoids such as rutin, hesperidin, vitamin P, flavons, flavonals, and methoxylated bioflavonoids, including nobelitin and tangeretin. Nobelitin and tangeretin have more cortisone activity per weight than injectable cortisone. These two bioflavonoids have been found to remove heavy metals, drugs, and hydrocarbons from our bodies. They also have been found to decrease red blood cell clumping. In one experiment, three to four oranges or five tangerines decreased blood viscosity by 6%.

Vegans and ovo-vegetarians, who eat eggs but no dairy food or animal flesh, may develop a lack of vitamin B and calcium too. The latter may cause rickets in children and increases the risk of osteoporosis in women after menopause. Eliminating meat and the iron it contains renders vegetarians vulnerable to iron-deficiency anemia. This is further compounded by the fact that whatever iron they do consume is less well absorbed because of the emphasis on other foods such as soy, protein, bran, and fiber that interfere with iron absorption by the gut.
See page 105 for a list of vitamin C-rich foods. Zinc is another matter. As described in the chapter on diet and sex, correcting true zinc deficiency can improve sexual performance and libido in men. That's the rationale for the oyster legend (see page 147). There is ample evidence in animal and human studies that zinc deficiency can lower the sperm count, and that replacing the missing zinc will increase the number of sperm and permit conception in previously infertile couples. The ovum (female egg) also requires zinc, so women too need to get enough in their diet.
