The heat from the sterilization process may affect the vitamin content. This will be the subject of further research. The fresh green leaves of the hemp plant could not be tested for nutrition. They are used in the Indian beverage called Bhang, a frothy concoction of hemp leaves, spices, milk and honey or sugar.
Protein
Hemp seeds contain up to 24% protein. A handful of seed provides the minimum daily requirement for adults. Our testing confirms that hemp is a high quality protein containing all eight essential amino acids in the correct proportions that humans need. |

Near the equator where the year-round warm temperature provides sunshine and lots of vegetation, the plants have a high concentration of vitamin C and vinegar. These acids, ascorbic and acetic, make the minerals, calcium, magnesium, zinc, phosphorus soluble and usable. The blood, therefore, becomes more acidic and thicker. The blood pressure tends to be lower. In the northern climes, with less sunshine and less vegetation, the C and the acetic acid are less abundant, and the calcium increases. The blood tends to become more alkaline and thinner. The BP becomes higher. |

To keep nipples soft, rinse off the baby's saliva after each feeding, and apply olive oil or vitamin E oil. Toughen tender nipples by exposing them to the air. Drop the trapdoor in your nursing bra and leave it open as much as possible. The plastic lining in the bra holds in moisture and keeps out air. To prevent this, keep a sterile pad in each cup and change it frequently when it becomes moist.
Do not let anyone, family member or doctor, induce you to stop nursing because of a breast infection or a bad cold or flu. Probably the only valid reason to discontinue nursing is tuberculosis. |

Hypertension
Natural control of elevated blood pressure that naturopathic physicians might use includes a vegetarian diet, no salt, vitamin B-complex, choline, inositol, C, E, calcium, magnesium, lecithin, potassium, zinc, selenium, fiber, octacosanol, kelp, garlic, cra-tagus berry, linden flowers, mistletoe.
Here is the story of a woman with low blood pressure:
LOW BLOOD PRESSURE
C. J. is a forty-seven-year-old female investor/secretary, 5 feet 7 inches, 168 pounds. Her blood pressure has been hovering down at 96/72 to 95/56. |
Then folic acid and vitamin E were added. Her heart and lungs "forgot" to function every once in a while, but after a few weeks of constant vigilance with the mother and the monitoring machines, her condition stabilized. Dr. Kane was asked to "take a look.'' Dr. Kane knew from personal experience that the nervous system needs a great deal of nourishment—more than just water, minerals, and glucose.
Blood chemistry studies were limited but did reveal nutrient deficiencies. (The lack of many essential nutrients suggested the reason for the early delivery.) Dr. |

This seems to indicate that these two patients had a defect in the mechanism that transports vitamin B13 across the blood-brain barrier into the brain.
There are a multitude of other causes of brain damage resulting in dementia. For instance, recurrent bouts of severe hypoglycemia can cause accumulated brain damage much like the mini-strokes we have talked about.287 Some of the medications commonly used today to treat medical disorders can depress brain function, which is a special danger in the elderly who are often given a multitude of prescriptions from several different doctors. |
In fact, the antioxidant vitamin E has been shown to significantly block the toxic effect of glutamate in brain cell cultures.108
While it has not been shown that glutamate and aspartate can penetrate the placental barrier except at high concentrations, we know that there are conditions under which this barrier may be faulty. Besides, until the issues are adequately studied by independent scientists, why risk permanently injuring your baby's brain? |
It is hypothesized that this occurs because, as an antioxidant, vitamin C is being used up fighting free radicals that develop as a result of the initial brain injury.36 Within twenty-four hours the brain's level of ascorbic acid falls to barely detectable levels. This leaves the brain vulnerable to further free radical attack.
Once the brain has exhausted its supply of antioxidants, it can no longer protect itself from the enormous amounts of free radicals being generated. We know that following an injury to the brain, the metabolism of the entire body speeds up rapidly. |

WHAT TO DO—INTERNAL APPROACH
HERBS
Cleanse the system internally with vitamin A- and C-rich herbs such as: Yellow Dock, Burdock, Poke Root, Queens Delight and/or Echinacea. Golden Seal is also useful for its antiseptic properties.
HOMEOPATHIC
Anthracinum 30c: Black and blue sores that decompose quickly and have black centers. Arnica 30c: Crops of small boils all over the body. Pyrogenium 30c: Swollen, inflamed, and discolored-looking boils. Better from heat. Rhus Tox 30c: Red, swollen, and itchy; accompanied by swollen glands.
Silica 30c: Boils discharge their pus and do not heal readily. |

A half-cup of black beans contains 128 micrograms, or 32 percent of the Daily Value (DV) for folate, a B vitamin that may lower risk of heart disease and fight birth defects. That same cup has 2 milligrams of iron, 11 percent of the DV, and 305 milligrams of potassium, or 9 percent of the DV. Potassium is a mineral that has been shown to help control blood pressure naturally.
_Getting the Most_
Go for the fiber. While virtually all dried beans are good sources of fiber, some varieties stand out from the pack. Black beans, for example, contain 6 grams of fiber in a half-cup serving. |
One cup of cooked pearl barley contains 36 micrograms of selenium, more than half the Daily Value (DV), and 5 international units of vitamin E, 17 percent of the DV.
Fiber Protection
Besides helping to reduce damage from dangerous LDL cholesterol, there's another way in which barley helps keep blood vessels healthy. It's loaded with beta-glucan, a type of soluble fiber that forms a gel in the small intestine. Cholesterol in your body binds to this gel, which is then excreted from the body.
Soluble fiber does more than lower cholesterol. |

Early research findings seem to indicate there may be some correlation between cataract formation, a major problem in the elderly, and vitamin C intake. Cataracts, which cause blurred vision, are due to an accumulation of damaged proteins in the lens of the eye. Cataracts are rare in younger people because normal processes in their eyes clear out any protein excess.
We know that one reason for cataracts is accumulated damage from exposure to the ultraviolet rays, mostly from the sun. |

The nutrients most likely to be affected are vitamin B12, folic acid, iron, and calcium.
Medication enters the picture here, too. Many therapeutic drugs have nutrient-blocking side effects. Drugs can block the body's absorption ability and nutrient metabolism, but it's rarely for more than one or two nutrients, fortunately. Or a drug might change the process of nutrient excretion. The risk of such adverse nutritional side effects from medications increases as a person takes more drugs simultaneously or takes one drug over a long period of time. |

Once regarded as quacks and charlatans, chiropractors are now considered leading practitioners in the growing field of physical therapy. These days, if you suffer from neck or back pain, your doctor is nearly as likely to send you to a chiropractor as to a physical therapist, after serious problems such as meningitis or spinal cord tumors have been ruled out. |

The dose of vitamin B12 used to treat certain anemias contains a millionth of a gram of cobalt. Trace elements, present in barely measurable amounts in the body, are essential for its development and functioning. The human body manufactures only fifty to a hundred millionths of a gram of thyroid hormone each day, yet a small excess or deficiency in this already "infinitesimal" amount can seriously affect the health of the individual.
The power of the infinitesimal dose is not clearly understood, but neither is the action of aspirin and many other drugs. |
