She was now on vitamin D, calcium, and an osteoporosis drug called Fosmax, but she wondered about exercise. What was right for her?
Knowing Gladys well, I asked her if she wanted to go to a gym. Her answer was clear: Nobody that she didn't know was going to stare at her, thank you very much. So I suggested that Gladys start with something she liked. That's where dancing came in.
A friend and I both suggested that Gladys join the local dance club and kick up her heels. Eventually she did—and she loved it so much that she started dancing three days a week. |

The Omega Diet reduces your homocysteine levels by increasing your intake of folic acid, a vitamin found in fruit, green leafy vegetables, and legumes. Fish, another key component of the plan, also lowers homocysteine levels.3
The diet protects your cardiovascular system in numerous other ways as well, including raising your antioxidant levels, reducing your risk of blood clots, and helping to normalize your blood pressure and heartbeat. |
Regrettably, they are called a bewildering variety of names including "Omega III Essential Fatty Acids," "Omega-3s," "Fish EPA," Omega-3 EPA," "Fish Body Oil," "Fish Oil Supplements," and even vitamin "F" (for "fatty" acids). To clarify matters, what you are looking for are two particular omega-3 fatty acids: "eicosapen-taenoic acid" (EPA) and "docosahexaenoic acid" (DHA). (Remember that DHA and DHEA are entirely different substances. DHEA is a hormone, not an essential fatty acid.) The amount of EPA plus DHA per 1,000 milligram capsule can vary from 325 to 825 milligrams. |
If the diet is supplemented with fish oil, however, antioxidant supplements, especially vitamin E, may be needed as well.
The Bottom Line
• Before a heart attack or stroke can occur, a number of changes have to take place within your cardiovascular system. Some of the changes are set in motion in your twenties or thirties. The more changes you can prevent, the lower your risk of a heart attack or stroke.
• The Omega Diet protects your cardiovascular system in a number of ways. |
Eating fat-free salmon makes as much nutritional sense as buying carrots that have been stripped of their beta-carotene or oranges that have been hybridized to be low in vitamin C.

This graph shows the dramatic changes in oil consumption that took place between 1909 and 1992. At the beginning of the twentieth century, butter, lard, and shortening were the most commonly used fats. |
The fact that the phytochemicals in fruits and vegetables are potent anticancer agents helps explain why cancer studies involving vitamin supplements have had such lackluster results: The pills contain only a fraction of what the plants have to offer. Until researchers can identify and encapsulate all the myriad healing substances found in plants, it is far wiser to eat the whole foods themselves. This way, you will be getting all their known cancer-fighting nutrients—plus all those yet to be identified. |

When the oil is made, a bit of tincture of benzoin or vitamin E od needs to be added as a preservative.
Paste
An herbal paste is also called an electuary or herbal candy because it is mixed with sweeteners and tastes good. Children especially like to take herbs this way. In fact, in East Indian Ayurvedic medicine, herbs are often administered powdered and mixed with a little honey as a carrier. Various sweeteners may be used such as honey, glycerine, raw sugar or rice syrup, and often ghee (clarified butter) is added for aiding digestion and assimilation. |

Dietrick says that the cure was accomplished with six tablespoonfuls of lecithin and 100 milligrams of vitamin E daily. He adds: "It would seem quite possible that the cells of the pancreas which secrete insulin may have become starved for lecithin due to an insufficiency in the diet, and that for this reason they had reduced their manufacture of insulin. When sufficient lecithin is again supplied, it is quite conceivable that those cells might resume their normal secretion of insulin..."

Constituents in Royal Jelly
Researchers have analyzed royal jelly and found that it contains proteins, several types of natural sugars, unsaturated fats, a number of enzymes, and is tremendously rich in pantothenic acid, nucleic acid, and vitamin B6. When lab animals were given only one of the last three nutrients in larger-than-normal amounts, their life span increased by approximately one-third. When generous quantities of all three nutrients were given, their life span increased by nearly half. Pantothenic acid has been found to relieve painful burning feet and the pain of neuritis. |
Some medical doctors have speculated that olive oil contains vitamin U, the ulcer healing substance.
The Chinese Ulcer Diet
You will notice that the Chinese diet is not the traditional ulcer diet prescribed by orthodox medics. This is very impressive, since a number of modern medical experts conceded years ago that there is very little advantage in the standard milk-heavy, bland ulcer diet, and recently the editors of Drug and Therapeutics Bulletin have reaffirmed these opinions. |
The Bulletin says that a diet of steamed fish, milk, and purees over a long period of time is apt to cause a patient to suffer from iron and vitamin C deficiency, plus complications of diarrhea, gas, and constipation. If the patient has surgery, he is especially cautioned to avoid the traditional ulcer diet afterwards.
The Bulletin adds that the patient who eliminates fried foods, stops smoking, and stops heavy drinking is taking sensible anti-ulcer action.

We know that most mammals produce their own vitamin C; only humans and guinea pigs and a few other creatures seem to have lost this capacity in the course of the evolutionary process. Apparently, some 250,000 years ago, we "traded" our liver's capacity to produce C for the ability to synthesize greater quantities of glucose, or blood sugar. This trade-off may have made evolutionary sense, for having access to sudden bursts of blood sugar may have allowed early humans to create huge, sudden spurts of energy that were needed for "fight or flight. |

Calculated by government officials, RDA standards are just enough to avoid common vitamin deficiency diseases, such as scurvy, rickets, or beri-beri. They do not, however, account for what's needed to maintain maximum health. RDAs are not only too low to reach optimum health, but they can't even be easily
RECOMMENDED DAILY ALLOWANCES VS. OPTIMUM DAILY ALLOWANCES obtained from today's foods. What people should be striving for is an optimum daily allowance (ODA), which translates into doses 5 to 100 times higher than RDA requirements. |
Of 100 terminally ill cancer patients treated with this nutrient:
• 45 showed little or no benefit; and of the remaining 55
• 25 had slower cancer growth
• 20 had the growth stopped
• 10 had the growth recede—one being cured completely
While vitamin C is certainly not a sure-fire cure for cancer, reports and studies show it to have obvious positive effects on this debilitating disease. |

However, based strictly on a large number of incidents related to us by readers, it does seem that vitamin E can be helpful.
In the May, 1981, issue of Postgraduate Medicine, doctors at the burn unit of the University of Washington School of Medicine pointed out that skin needs attention long after it has suffered a serious burn: "Natural skin lubrication is almost always diminished after skin is burned, as many sebaceous glands have been destroyed," they wrote. "Scaling and flaking are quite common and can be prevented by use of a skin moisturizer. |
As for vitamin C's ability to prevent colds, however, the total sample showed no effect. But when the data were broken down, a fascinating phenomenon emerged. In the twins who were living together, the placebos showed a significant preventive effect. Without this group, though, there was a high percentage of twins who wrongly guessed what treatment they were taking—that is, the twins who thought they were on a "high dose" as opposed to "low dose" reported having fewer, shorter and less severe colds than their twins. But here's the kicker: Twins living apart had the opposite results. |
Another nutrient that seems to help is vitamin C, which works as an anti-inflammatory agent.
There's no definitive information as to the cause of bursitis, but attacks are often brought on by a severe bruise. Occupations or other activities that cause great stress to the joints can bring on the development of chronic bursitis, which may be more difficult to treat than the acute variety. In such cases, the activity bringing on the pain should be stopped, if this is possible. |
That said, now let's take a look at why vitamin A is so important. We'll spend more time with this nutrient than any of the other protective factors because there's so much fascinating information, but also to give you an idea of the extent of solid scientific work that underpins the whole notion of cancer protection through nutrition.
Of all forms of cancer, none is so lethal as lung cancer. Fully 34 percent of all cancer deaths in men are from lung cancer, while in women it claims 16 percent of all victims (second only to breast cancer, which claims 19 percent). |
The problem with drugs that have traditionally been used with asthmatics is that they produce undesirable side effects—things like nervousness, upset stomach or even worse. vitamin C has the potential to help asthmatics with a lot less of these unpleasant or dangerous side effects. Most asthmatics are young people, and to limit their exercise is not good for them, either developmentally or psychologically."
Denver allergist Constantine Falliers, M.D., who is editor of the Journal of Asthma, takes a similar stance with regard to exercise. |
