People living in polluted environments need more vitamin D.
Calcium. Calcium is essential for the prevention of osteoporosis; supplementation should begin before the onset of menopause. There are many forms to choose from. Dairy is a poor source because many people have an intolerance to it. Calcium citrate is easy to digest, as it is already in an acidic medium. Calcium carbonates are alkaline and therefore more difficult to digest. Amino acid chelate is an excellent source of calcium. Calcium lactate is another good source. |
Hesperidin, gamma-oryzanol, and vitamin C are effective in treating many menopausal symptoms. Plant extracts that have proven valuable are remifemin, an extract of Cimicifuga racemosa; ginseng; and wild yam and dong quai, especially for women just entering menopause. Other therapies of value include acupuncture, exercise, and relaxation techniques. (See below.)

GENERAL NOTES
• Other ingredients such as vitamin E, honey, or essential ods, etc., can be added and stirred into a salve mixture as a very last step before pouring the salve into its final storage container(s).
• The best way to add essential oils to a salve is to drop them into the container just prior to pouring in the warm salve mixture.
• Some of the ingredients (other than the infused herbs and essential ods) added to the salve mixture can separate out and settle to the bottom of the container during the sitting and coohng period. |

Vitamin B12 in supplements is derived from microorganisms and is one of the few common whole-food supplements in pill form. Adequate B12 helps keep cellular structures free of distortions that occur from cancer, aging, injuries, or degenerative diseases.
9. Except where noted otherwise, all herbs are used according to the standard dosages and preparation methods (see page 70).
Other Treatments
TREATMENT D: Oxygenation therapies such as oral or intravenous hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and ozone treatments. |
When more recent test results became known, some companies took their B12 listings off the containers, while others began inoculating the tempeh with bacteria that produce the vitamin.
Most other fermented foods produced in modern facilities, such as miso and soy sauce, are likewise virtually devoid of B12, even though various publications over the years have recommended them as valuable sources. |

Hesperidin and vitamin C are useful in treating vasomotor symptoms, a study showed.
A. Horoschak, "Nocturnal Leg Cramps, Easy Bruisability and Epistaxi in Menopausal Patients Treated with Hesperidin and Ascorbic Acid," Del. State Med. Journal (January 1959): 19-22.
In a clinical trial, 100 mg of gamma-oryzanol were given 3 times a day to 40 women with vasomotor problems, insomnia, headaches, muscle or joint pain, and nervousness or depression. |

The abovementioned related vegetable plants, mainly because of their vitamin content and pleasant bitter substances, are, moreover, important ingredients in a proper diet.
Chicory (1) is a tall herb, exuding a milky sap when bruised. It grows by waysides, the edges of fields, embankments and in waste places and may reach a height of over one metre, depending on the location. It has a spindle-shaped tap root (2) and basal rosette of leaves, saw-toothed with lobes curving toward the base, from which rises a stiff, angled stem. The five-segmented flowers are clustered in heads. |

According to modern nutritional thinking, milk (and today that means pasteurized, homogenized, vitamin A and D fortified cow's milk) is an "excellent food" beause of its high volume of component elements such as protein and calcium. The fat content of milk has recently come under criticism, so that it is now considered desirable to consume "skim" or "low-fat" milk (although the American Academy of Pediatrics does not recommend low-fat milk for infants). As we have seen in chapter two (see page 55), human mother's milk has somewhat more fat than cow's milk. |

Citric acid provides vitamin C to the body whereas oxalic acid, found in spinach, chard and sorrel, binds with calcium in the body and makes the calcium unavailable, ultimately causing kidney stones to form.
Salicylic acid, found in meadowsweet, willow bark, white poplar and wintergreen, has recognized analgesic effects and so has been synthesized into the drug, aspirin. Tannic acid is described under the category, Tannins. Acids are insoluble in vinegar. Examples: red clover, yarrow, willow bark. |

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men in the United States and many Western countries. In many ways prostate cancer is the male equivalent of breast cancer. It occurs in clinically detectable form at roughly the same rate (about 180,000 cases per year) and causes almost as many deaths—about 40,000 men per year in the United States. And it's just as devastating psychologically. |
The foods that contain significant natural vitamin D are certain fatty fish, such as salmon, tuna, herring, mackerel, and cod (yes, cod liver oil, too), oysters, and mushrooms, especially dried shiitakes. Luckily, regular fish consumption is part of following the Okinawa Program (see Chapter Three).
A diet high in flavonoids—the hormone-blocking, cancer-fighting phytoestrogens found in soy and other legumes—is associated with a low risk for prostate cancer, although the reasons are not yet fully understood. |
Some researchers believe those with darker skin (brown or black) who are sunlight deprived require at least 1,000 IU a day, despite a diet that contains vitamin D foods.61 A prudent recommendation is for five to fifteen minutes of sun exposure of hands, forearms, and face two to three times per week (not to the point of sunburn) and application of sunscreen (SPF at least 8) thereafter. Then take a daily supplement of 200 to 600 IU according to your age. With no sun exposure and little dietary intake, a supplement of 800 IU is advisable.58,66

As Albert Szent-Gyorgyi, the discoverer of vitamin C, has written, "We know life only by its symptoms." We understand virtually nothing about such basic life functions as pain, sleep, and the control of cell differentiation, growth, and healing. We know little about the way every organism regulates its metabolic activity in cycles attuned to the fluctuations of earth, moon, and sun. |
Others detected vitamin B2 and B6 depletion from blood, brain, liver, kidneys, and heart, as well as major shifts in trace-metal metabolism in response to low levels of microwaves. The distribution of copper, manganese, molybdenum, nickel, and iron was affecred throughour rhe bodies of rats. Similar trace-metal changes were recorded after exposure to ELF electric fields for four months, even at moderate field srrengths for only half an hour per day. |
Some animal tests are now bemg funded, but, since vitamin C is nontoxic, immediate clinical experiments on large numbers of humans would make much more sense.
In following up the regeneration connection, two experiments in particular are crying out to be tried. Someone must attempt to duplicate the electrical environment of regeneration around tumors in lab animals, using electrodes. This would involve introducing small negative currents to thoroughly test the hypothesis that cancer cells are stuck in a state of incomplete dedifferentiation. |

Joyce was put on a program that included diet changes (reduction of refined foods), exercise, and natural hormonal therapies including natural progesterone and DHEA, along with vitamin and mineral supplements. Over the next three bone density tests, Joyce's bone density reversed itself. "My internist was amazed. He kept saying, "I have never seen this happen ". I feel so much stronger on the natural hormones that I know I will not be bothered by osteoporosis, " she claimed.

Sinyukhin found a direct correlation between these orderly electrical events and biochemical changes: As the positive current increased, cells in the area more than doubled their metabolic rate, also becoming more acidic and producing more vitamin C than before.
Sinyukhin then applied extra current, using small batteries, to a group of newly lopped plants, augmenting the regeneration current. These battery-assisted plants restored their branches up to three times faster than the control plants. The currents were very small—only 2 to 3 microamperes for five days. |
Albert Szent-Gyorgyi, who'd already won a Nobel Prize for his work on oxidation and vitamin C, made a stunning suggestion in a speech before the Budapest Academy of Science on March 21, 1941. (Think of the date. World War II was literally exploding around him, and there he was, calmly laying the foundations for a new biology.) Speaking of the mechanistic approach of biochemistry, he pointed out that when experimenters broke living things down into their constituent parts, somewhere along the line life slipped through their fingers and they found themselves working with dead matter. |

Add tincture of benzoin or vitamin E as preservative.
Method 2—quicker:
1. Same as Step 1 above.
2. Place bruised herbs in oil in a pan. Slowly heat and cook herbs gendy until crispy, about 1/2 to 1 hour. Cook roots first, then add leaves and flowers last. Keep pot covered.
3-5.Same as steps 4-6 for making alcohol tinctures. (See page 191.) 6. Same as Step 7 above.
Method 3—lengthier, but yields a superior oil. The proportions of herbs to oil is different, and water is added to extract additional medicinal properties into the oil. |
Add vitamin E oil or tincture of benzoin.
6. Test salve for hardness: take teaspoon of salve oil and blow on it until hard. Or put teaspoon of salve oil in refrigerator for a minute. When it looks hard, test with finger to see how it feels. If too hard, you won't be able to spread salve; add a litde more oil to salve. If too soft, it will feel mushy; add a litde more melted beeswax to salve. In either case, test salve oil until you get desired hardness.
7. Right away pour oil into small jar or tin, for it will start to harden immediately. Wash out pots with hot water as soon as possible. |

Pantothenic acid, often referred to as the "antistress" vitamin, plays an important part in the production of the adrenal hormones, which, as we have noted, are rapidly produced when we are under stress.
Aside from eating well, it's also important to drink plenty of fresh water, preferably filtered or spring water. It helps to rid the body of toxins and other by-products of stress. Avoid smoking and excessive caffeine and alcohol consumption; these popular vices only raise your stress levels. And it's never too late to change. |

Vitamin E (400 IU per cup oil) as preservative. Dose: Oils do not have a dosage limit since they are used on the body. Overuse, however, can be messy and stain clothes or furniture. Storage: Oils will last about 1 year. Store in glass jars in a cool, dark place. and healing are usually made with such herbs as comfrey, calendula, sage, lemon balm, lavender and other similar herbs. These herbal oils can be used over the entire body or specific areas needing treatment. |

Oils last up to seven years if a small amount of vitamin E or benzoin tincture is added to the oil to preserve it. They also need to be stored in tightly covered jars and kept in a cool place. Likewise, salves last for 5 years or more when preserved and stored in this way.
Powders last from 3 months to a year or two at most depending on how well they are stored. Powders particularly need to be well-sealed to prevent exposure to the air and kept in a cool, dark place. Herbal poultices, fomentations, washes, plasters, milks, gargles, gruels and potherbs are made as needed and not stored at all. |

Make Room for Calcium and vitamin D Impact *? ?
Calcium is a mineral with many functions. Ninety-nine percent of it goes toward building and maintaining strong, healthy bones and teeth —an absolute necessity if you hope to avoid the pain, fractures, and premature death associated with osteoporosis. The other 1 percent helps your heart beat, your muscles contract and relax, your nerves send and receive messages, and your blood clot. No wonder you hear so much about this micronutrient!
Throughout our lives, we must take in enough calcium daily to replace the calcium our bodies are using. |
If you eat dairy products such as milk, yogurt, and cheese every day, one 750 mg tablet with vitamin D would suffice. If you consume little or no dairy, I recommend two 750 mg tablets. That breaks down to roughly 1,000 mg a day from all sources for men twenty-five through sixty-five, and women twenty-five through fifty. Women over fifty who are postmenopausal, and men over sixty-five, need a total of 1,500 mg a day.
When choosing a calcium supplement, consider calcium carbonate first. It is the most readily available and the least expensive option. |
Take it as a separate vitamin tablet or combined with calcium.
REGULAR MEDICAL VISITS
37. Get Periodic Tune-ups Impact ????
We all have heard stories about someone going to a doctor's office for an annual checkup and dying in the parking lot on the way out. That's because there really is no assurance that a physical exam and blood tests will pick up everything that may cause you harm. It would be wonderful if an annual EKG would detect heart disease or an annual chest X ray would pick up the beginnings of lung cancer. |
Taking in more, along with vitamin D to enhance its effects, is critical for preventing bone loss that can lead to osteoporosis.
