A Randomized Factorial Trial of vitamins c and E and Beta Carotene in the Secondary Prevention of Cardiovascular Events in Women: Results From the Women's Antioxidant Cardiovascular Study")
The AMA's statement on antioxidants having no benefits in this study is based on the inclusion of all those women who did not take the antioxidants. I believe this conclusion to be biased in favor of drug company interests and wholly incorrect from a scientific point of view. |

Other medical associations and pharmaceutical-affiliated groups are making similar pronouncements. vitamins c and E, according to them, are nutritionally worthless. And they're basing that conclusion on a study that actually showed the vitamins to be far better at preventing cardiovascular disease than any prescription drug!
How to lie with statistics
So how can anyone claim these vitamins are worthless when the study clearly shows a strong, significant health benefit in those who take the vitamins? |

Even though proteins important to supplement if you are not already eating a high protein diet, it is far more important to supplement trace minerals, macro minerals like magnesium, zinc and calcium; various vitamins including all the B vitamins; plus vitamins c, D and K. In addition, you need to supplement numerous phytonutrients, which means the medicine that comes from plants. Those include various carotenoids like beta keratin or zeaxanthin, lutein, anthocyanidins, Proanthocyanidins like those found in grape seeds or even Resveratrol found in grape skin. |

Those who consumed the most salads enjoyed above-median blood levels of folic acid, vitamins c and E, lycopene, and alpha- and beta-carotene. And each serving of salad eaten was associated with a 165 percent higher likelihood of subjects meeting the Recommended Dietary Allowance for vitamin C in women and a 119 percent greater likelihood in men.* Keep in mind that the rich supply of nutrients in those salads is also acting to help promote weight loss. So enjoy your SuperFoods salad daily and recognize that it's helping you reach your goals. |
Spinach provides your body with a rich infusion of SuperNutrients including lutein/zeaxanthin, beta-carotene, plant-derived omega-3 fatty acids, glutathione, alpha lipoic acid, vitamins c and E, the B vitamins including thiamine, riboflavin, B6, and folate; minerals including calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese, and zinc; various polyphenols, and betaine. That's a pretty impressive array of nutrients for a simple, delicious leaf. And, in fact, it's only a partial list of the nutrients in spinach. |

• Replace iceberg lettuce with spinach.
• Add spinach to your lasagna, pasta, or pizza.

Simple but so good! We like to add a dash of crushed red pepper for excitement—be careful! Drizzle some basil-infused olive oil over the spinach for a taste you won't believe. This recipe contains four powerhouse foods. |

There is a significant amount of vitamins c and E in this product, but their potency is quickly diminished once this jar-packaged product is open. Although vastly overpriced, it's an OK option for normal skin with slight signs of dryness.

The study that showed idebenone has the antioxidant muscle to surpass others involved only 30 subjects, and compared idebenone to vitamins c and E, alpha lipoic acid, coenzyme Q10, and kinetin. The study did not, however, compare the effects of idebenone to many of the hundreds of othet potent antioxidants that commonly appear in other skin-care products, nor did it compare the effects of idebenone with the effects of a combination of antioxidants. Perhaps a cocktail of antioxidants would far surpass idebenone—we don't know. |
Interestingly, a study comparing the protective effect of idebenone on sun-exposed skin found it ineffective compared to topical application of vitamins c and E with ferulic acid, but this study was conducted in part by Dt. Sheldon Pinnell, whose Skinceuticals line sells an antioxidant setum with those very ingredients (Source: The Journal of Investigative Dermatology, May 2006, pages 1185-1187).
The world of antioxidants is far more complex than the mere handful that Allergan compared to idebenone. |

Low calorie, 1 V2 grams of fiber, small but measurable amounts of calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, vitamins c and K, plus not insignificant amounts of vitamin A, beta-carotene, and potassium. Celery also contains vitamins c, Bl, and B2; calcium; iron; magnesium; phosphorus; and potassium. The leaves contain many of these nutrients and can work well as a replacement for parsley. Celery contains phalides, which may help lower cholesterol, and coumarins, possibly useful in cancer prevention.
Home Remedies
Wild celery was used as a medicinal plant throughout the Middle Ages. People used it to "treat" conditions such as anxiety, insomnia, rheumatism, gout, and arthritis. Wild celery was also thought to provide strength and purify the blood. |

Studies show that the isolated vitamins c and E both protect against nitrosamine formation, but as you know, I always recommend superfood supplements over isolated vitamins. Just make sure you get plenty of vitamins c and E from some natural source.

Studying cultured human cells, he's found that "deficiency of vitamins c, E, B12, B6, niacin, folic acid, iron or zinc appears to mimic radiation by causing single- and double-strand DNA breaks, oxidative lesions, or both"—precursors to cancer. "This has serious implications, as half of the U.S. population may be deficient in at least one of these micronutrients." Most of the missing micronutrients are supplied by fruits and vegetables, of which only 20 percent of American children and 32 percent of adults eat the recommended five daily servings. |

Brightly colored fruits and vegetables such as squash, carrots, berries, and oranges have high amounts of bioflavonoids and vitamins c and A, which will help resolve inflammation and blisters of the skin, and increase the efficiency of the body's immune system. A freshly pressed green vegetable juice a day will give you essential nutrients to alkalinize the body and boost immunity. Avoid meat, fried foods, sugar, chocolate, and sodas, which suppress the immune system and interfere with the healing process. |

A decreased ability to absorb vitamin B12 or folate or niacin or vitamins c or E may mean an increased risk of neurological deficit or damage from free radicals.
Figure %3 (kit Reaction Peristalsis (or squeezing of the intestines) is stimulated by nerves that are regulated by a serotonin-type chemical. When all is working correctly, serotonin reduces the discomfort we may feel when gas passes through and stimulates more neurons to contract in a coordinated fashion to move our food along. Using laxatives can overstimulate the intestinal nerves and lead to chronic constipation.

Good dietary sources of carotenes as well as vitamins c and E are green leafy vegetables, yellow-orange fruits and vegetables, red and purple fruits and vegetables, legumes, grains, and seeds. Good dietary sources of flavonoids are citrus fruits, berries, onions, parsley, legumes, green tea, and red wine.

Antioxidants such as vitamins c and E, selenium, carotenes, and others are molecules that defend the body from cellular damage by ending the free radical chain reaction before vital molecules are harmed. These are often referred to as "free radical scavengers."

Grapes have small amounts of calcium and magnesium, vitamins c, A, and K, and a decent amount (294 mg) of potassium. I recommend eating them seeds and all. Too many amazing health-promoting compounds have been extracted from the seeds to throw them away.
A number of grape seed oil vendors have claimed that grape seed oil is high in OPCs (proan-thocyanadins). However, independent studies have indicated that grape seed oil is actually the grape product with the lowest concentration of OPCs. I don't recommend grape seed oil in any case. |

The ATBC trial, originally designed to test cancer prevention abilities of vitamins c and E and (3-carotene, tested supplementation with 50mg a-tocopherol acetate daily for 5 to 8 years [42]. In this study of male smokers, a-tocopherol supplementation was associated with a modest trend toward decreased incidence of angina pectoris but no decrease in CVD mortality. (3-carotene supplementation had no preventive effect and was associated with a slight increase in the occurrence of angina [76]. An apparent excess of hemorrhagic stroke in the treatment group complicated this study. |
