Reduced levels of vitamins a and e, and of beta carotene, may promote nervous system degeneration and dementia. A study of 38 patients showed that both those with Alzheimer's and those with multi-infarct dementia had low levels of E and beta carotene; A was significantly reduced only in patients with Alzheimer's. C. Zaman et al., "Plasma Concentrations of vitamins a and e and Carotenoids in Alzheimer's Disease," Age and Aging 21 (1992): 91-94. Vitamin E prevents some types of cell deaths, including such deaths caused by glutamate and cysteine starvation.

It contains many vitamins, minerals, enzymes, proteins, and trace minerals, but is especially rich in the antioxidants selenium and vitamins a and e. Wheatgrass contains virtually all known essential minerals if it is grown in good, rich soil—this makes it superior to virtually all other plant foods. Its ability to work directly on the liver makes it valuable in treating all sorts of disorders, including those of the lung and colon. It is also used to help the body eliminate excess metals, and to control irregularity.

Still another study specifically suggested that cancer patients treated with Adriamycin should supplement with vitamins a and e and selenium to reduce its toxic side effects (Faure et al. 1996). c°Qio CoQiq is used with vitamin E to protect patients from chemotherapy-induced cardiomyopathies. CoQiq is nontoxic even at high dosages and has been shown to prevent livet damage from the drugs Mitomycin C and 5-FU. Adtiamycin-induced cardiomyopathies have been prevented by concomitant supplementation with CoQ10.

Nor is vitamin C the only vitamin susceptible to oxidation: the antioxidant vitamins a and e are also prone to damage. Being fat soluble, they tend to be protected by being in fattier foods. Beta-carotene, the vegetable form of vitamin A, is water soluble and highly prone to oxidation. While storing foods in cool, dark places tends to help, oxidation still occurs even in the refrigerator. Spinach stored in an open container will lose 10 percent of its vitamin C content every day. On the whole, frozen foods keep their nutrient content much better.

Symptoms of hearing loss improved when forty middle-aged to elderly patients were treated with vitamins a and e for twenty-eight to forty-eight days, but, again, this sort of treatment plan must be supervised by your alternative care physician. Vitamin E may alleviate women's hot flashes and lessen vaginal thinning and dryness. Postmenopausal women may wish to increase gradually to 600 IU of vitamin E, although some may require up to 800 IU to reduce these symptoms. Vitamin E is found in green leafy vegetables, eggs, and various oils.

Skin treatments: Use a cream containing significant amounts of vitamins a and e in forms that can penetrate the epidermis (such as retinyl palmitate and vitamin E acetate—see Resources). Eczema Factors to consider: As for dermatitis. The most common contributory factors are the combination of a food allergy (most often wheat or dairy) and a lack of essential fatty acids from seeds and their cold-pressed oils, which have powerful anti-inflammatory effects.

They also provide vitamins a and e. Sweet cherries also contain these nutrients, but not as much of vitamins a and e as their mouth-puckering kin. The vitamin E in cherries is of particular interest, since one study of postmenopausal women found that those who consumed the most vitamin E had the least risk of heart disease. And there was an interesting twist. The women who got their vitamin E naturally—solely from food—had less risk than women who were also taking vitamin E supplements. The problem with vitamin E is that it's difficult to get the DV of 30 international units from food alone.

Vitamin E is best in its natural form (as a mixed tocopherol or d-alpha tocopherol). Avoid synthetic vitamin E (dl-alpha). •Selenium... 100 meg per meal. Selenium is needed to produce glutathione peroxidase, an antioxidant enzyme that protects the body from free radical damage.

Yellow vegetables are high in the fat-soluble vitamins a and e. These yellow vegetables include carrots, corn, pumpkin, rutabagas, sweet potatoes, and acorn, butternut, Hubbard, spaghetti, and summer squashes. Fruits are an important food group for pregnancy, providing a good source of vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and biological water. Raisins and apricots are high sources of iron. Citrus is high in vitamin C, and melons are high in vitamin A. Fruits have an important role in cleansing as well.

Plus, the fat-soluble vitamins a and e can only be absorbed when fat is present. These antioxidants work to prevent a variety of diseases, including cancer, heart disease, and immune disorders. A distinction needs to be made between good and bad fats. Good sources are found in fish, avocados, nuts and nut butters, and olive oil. Supplements Nutrients have many important functions for the individual working to lose weight healthfully. Some help to eliminate cravings by balancing blood sugar, while others burn calories quickly by speeding up the metabolism.

It is obvious that vitamins a and e are needed for proper cellular differentiation. It is important to remember that cats must have preformed vitamin A, because they are unable to convert beta carotene to vitamin A. Natural fatty acids, including the omega-3 group, also protect mucous membranes. Increased dietary ingestion of omega-3 fatty acids (flax seed, fish oil) reduces the risk of developing childhood asthma and reduces current asthmatic symptoms including airway hyperresponsiveness.

This article reviewed the role of vitamin A and retinoids as potential therapeutic agents in treating cancer. The author makes the following observations: animals experiments indicate retinoids increase cell-mediated cytotoxicity. Other studies showed that retinoids can restore lymphocyte phytohemagglu-tinin-responsiveness in terminal cancer patients.
Results found that patients with single head and neck cancer had lowered levels of beta-carotene and also suggest that low levels of vitamins a and e may be involved in the etiology of second tumors among such patients. —N. de Vries and G.B. A and E to the Rescue Because vitamins a and e are fat-soluble, if you don't have fat in your body, you don't have enough of these vitamins. So in people with eating disorders, these important nutrients can be in short supply. One study, by researchers at Hebrew University in Israel, found that women with anorexia had significantly lower levels of both vitamin A and vitamin E in their bodies than women without anorexia. "We generally supplement the fat-soluble vitamins in the beginning of treatment, because these women have no fat," says Kathryn J. Zerbe, M.D.

There is evidence of interference with the absorption of vitamins a and e.47 Their cholesterol-lowering effect may also be linked to their binding of bile salts and increasing their faecal excretion, thus increasing bile salt synthesis by endogenous cholesterol.48 Further studies to investigate the effects of saponins on bile, cholesterol and lipid metabolism are clearly warranted. One steroidal sapogenin that has been studied, diosgenin, is, like the sterols, also similar enough in structure to cholesterol to interfere with its esterifica-tion in the liver.

Take a good B-complex formula supplying 25 milligrams of each of the major B vitamins twice daily. ¦ vitamins a and e are antioxidants that are beneficial for the skin. Take 10,000 international units of vitamin A and 15,000 international units of its precursor, beta-carotene, twice daily for one month. Then cut back to one dose of each daily. Also take 200 international units of vitamin E each day, in mixed-tocopherol form, and then gradually increase the dosage until you are taking 200 international units three times daily.
In general, you should store vitamin and mineral supplements away from heat, tightly capped, and out of reach of children. Keep vitamins a and e in the refrigerator. These two vitamins are usually oil-based and will keep longer in a cool environment. Check the expiration dates on any formula you buy. A vitamin or mineral formula that has passed its expiration date will not have full potency. Paying attention to diet and nutrition is perhaps the single most important supportive measure you can take for your health.
Zinc supports the immune system, speeds the healing process, promotes the absorption of vitamins a and e, and is important for glandular health in both men and women. Zinc is also a component of superoxide dismutase (SOD). Take 15 to 50 milligrams daily, with food. Note: Both selenium and zinc enhance the action of vitamin E. These three nutrients should be taken together. Take zinc with food to prevent stomach upset.
NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS ¦ Key nutrients that are often deficient in people with ulcerative colitis include vitamins a and e, folic acid, pantothenic acid, zinc, calcium, vitamin D, and iron, especially if there is bloody diarrhea. For necessary nutritional support, take a good multivitamin and mineral supplement two or three times daily. Select a powder or capsule form; these are easier to digest and assimilate than hard tablets. Note: Excessive amounts of iron are associated with a variety of health problems, including an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

These are high in vitamins a and e. Cabbage is a cruciferous vegetable which is also high in vitamin C. The American Cancer Society's epidemiological studies indicate that diets high in cruciferous vegetables are associated with less cancer incidence. The lactobacilli organisms found in fermented foods are very high in enzymes, which add to our overall enzyme bank when they are taken into the system. These organisms help with the digestion and conversion of starches and sugars in the vegetables to lactic and acetic acid in our colon.
