Researchers found that combining vitamins c and K-3 against cultured human breast cancer cells allowed for inhibition of the cancer growth at doses 90-98% less than what was required if only one of these vitamins was used against the cancer.115 Look beyond the obvious. Coumarin (a.k.a. dicumarol, warfarin) is an anti-coagulant drug that holds promise in cancer treatment by shuting down cancer cell metabolism and helping to slow metastasis. Vitamin K has a primary function of inducing coagulation.

These include the enzymes mentioned above (superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase); nonessential antioxidants, such as glutathione, proteins, and uric acid; and essential radical scavengers such as vitamins c, A, E, and beta-carotene (Gey, 1993). For example, macrophages and neutrophils arc types of immune cell that destroy foreign microbes by producing a respirator}' burst of hydrogen peroxide and free radicals. To prevent self-inflicted damage, macrophages contain high amounts of vitamin C. Antioxidant defenses are not perfect and DNA is damaged regularly. Ames et al.
For example, in studies on several tumor lines in mice, a combination of vitamins c and B12 inhibited tumor growth in up to 50% of the treated animals. The effects may be due to release of the cobalt nucleus in the presence of B12, and its attachment to ascorbic acid. This treatment did not inhibit normal cells. Vitamin C also reduced the toxicity and increased the effectiveness of a variety of chemotherapy and radiotherapy regimes in animals (Henson et al., 1991). Linus Pauling and colleague Ewan Cameron have been long-time proponents of the use of vitamin C in treating cancer patients.

These trials are testing various vitamin-like substances, as well as folic acid, vitamins c and E, and minerals as inhibitors of colon, lung, esophagus, cervix, bladder and skin cancer. They are looking at the overall incidence of cancer, the incidence of specific cancers, the rate of regression or progression of precancerous changes, as well as changes in cells and blood. Participants in these studies include volunteers from the general population; people at high risk for cancer, people who have previously been treated for cancer; as well as people who have precancerous conditions.
Sheridan, in turn, has only warned patients not to take megadoses of vitamins c and E, while on his medication. Clinical results are generally seen in three to five weeks, they say, but sometimes take as long as three months. Cancell "does not actually kill the cancer cell in the usual meaning of the word kill," Sheridan concludes. It is "effectively 'asking' the body to cure itself." 1 £arnivora Carnivora is an extract of Dionea muscipula, the meat-eating Venus Fly Trap plant. It was introduced into cancer therapy by Helmut Keller, MD of Germany.
In early 1992, Italian scientists reported that a combination of vitamin A with vitamins c and E could correct abnormalities in the cells of the rectum in people who had had polyps removed. Such abnormalities are believed to eventually progress to cancer in many cases. They reported their finding in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute (JNCI). The Bologna scientists found a decrease in the occurrence of malignant-type cells in patients who received the three vitamins, compared to controls.

In addition, as this book is written, the FDA seems to be warming up to approving large doses of beta-carotene and vitamins c and E for prevention of cancer and heart disease. Currently the RDAs and DVs remain unchanged, however, which leaves many consumers confused about the safe limits of sensible supplementation. Iron, the B vitamins and vitamins c and E were particularly protective. These results were confirmed by another study. A researcher at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore analyzed diet and supplement diaries kept by 281 men who had tested positive for HIV. The diaries had been kept for up to almost seven years. Compared with men who had a low intake of vitamins A and C, thiamin (B,) and niacin, those with a moderate to large intake had 40 percent less risk of progressing to full-blown AIDS. Allergies.

You may also want to consider taking antioxidants such as vitamins c and E, selenium, and lipoic acid, or natural herbal antiinflammatories such as bromelain, boswellia, and cat's claw. To help relieve pain—and possibly improve the condition of cartilage—you can apply ointments that contain MSM or capsaicin. In addition to good amounts of vitamins c and E and carotenoids, turmeric contains many other antioxidants. Turmeric is a key ingredient in many curry spice blends. Experiment with it in cooking. V Capers (Capparis spinosa). My own research at the U.S. Department of Agriculture with molecular biologist Stephen Beckstrom-Sternberg, Ph.D., shows that capers are a very rich source of cataract-preventing compounds known as aldose-reductose inhibitors. Use capers whenever you want extra zing in cooking. V Ginger (Zingiber officinale). Ginger is another good source of antioxidants.
Its leaves, and the leaves of many mint relatives like rosemary, contain generous amounts of vitamins c and E, some of which can be extracted in catnip tea or a mixed mint tea like my Cataractea. In addition to antioxidants, the trace minerals magnesium and manganese appear to play a role in cataract prevention. Enzymes containing these minerals help dispose of proteins damaged by oxidation that contribute to eye clouding. Catnip and the other mints contain both of these essential trace minerals.
Other studies show that people can reduce their risk of stroke by as much as 54 percent if they eat lots of fruits and veggies that are rich in beta-carotene and vitamins c and E. The message is clear: Eat more carrots. I munch them as snacks, include them in my vegetable soups and juice them, too, sometimes with garlic. VV English pea (Pisum sativum). It turns out that nearly all legumes contain genistein, which appears to be a cancer-preventive nutrient.
They are rich in vitamins, particularly beta-carotene (the vitamin A precursor) and vitamins c and E. You might also take a multivitamin supplement, if you don't already. One study of elderly people showed that a daily multivitamin significantly improved their immune function. Here's a quote from one of the thousands of letters I have received over the years, written by people disillusioned enough with their physicians to seek an alternative: "My husband, age 57, suffered a stroke a year ago.
Antioxidants are especially recommended, including vitamins c and E, the vitamin A-like nutrients beta-carotene and lycopene and the mineral selenium. Selenium is plentiful in Brazil nuts, and the others can be found in fruits, vegetables, nuts and whole grains. Personally, I prefer foods to supplements, but these nutrients are certainly available in supplements. If I had HIV, I would definitely consult a clinical nutritionist. Hypothyroidism Thyroid hormones regulate the metabolism in every cell of your body.
Fruits and vegetables are our main sources of potent antioxidants: vitamins c and E, the vitamin A-like carotenoids and folate, a B vitamin. Many studies show that as dietary consumption of these nutrients increases, risk of heart attack plummets by up to 40 percent. (And cancer risk drops about 50 percent as well). No wonder the National Research Council, the National Cancer Institute and most nutritional health authorities urge all Americans to "strive for five." This means getting at least five servings of fruits and vegetables a day.

The dose in this study was a relatively modest 400 milligrams each of vitamins c and E. Additional studies need to be done. There is evidence, too, that vitamin C can suppress the growth of human leukemia cells in culture and that when given in combination with certain anti-cancer drugs and hormones, it can make those substances act more effectively. What hasn't been proved is that vitamin C is useful in the treatment (as opposed to the prevention) of cancer. So far, however, on the treatment front, vitamin C has only been tested in advanced cancers. Dr.
Another group of rats were first given quantities of vitamins c and B1; along with cysteine, then were exposed to the same doses of acetaldehyde that had proved fatal in most of the other group of rats. None of the vitamin/cysteine-augmented rats died. There have been other reports that cysteine can protect against other potentially toxic substances. Cysteine is a precursor of glutathione, a tripeptide (made from three amino acids) that has been reported to eliminate certain toxic chemicals by binding to them and thus rendering them harmless.

These investigators found an inverse relationship between cancer risk and indices of both vitamins c and A, after controlling for cigarette smoking and alcohol consumption. There was a similar relationship for vegetable consumption in general, but not for cruciferous vegetables in particular. Wassertheil-Smoller e_t al. If you anticipate surgery, increase your supply of vitamins c, E, and bromelain to help speed recovery of surgical wounds. Earl's Rx If you have a cut or burn, apply aloe, calendula, or comfrey cream as needed. (You can use them together; in fact, there are some special creams that combine all three.) In addition, I recommend taking the following supplements to help Mother Nature do her job. Bromelain: One 500 mg. tablet three times daily. Vitamin E: Take 400-800 IU capsule of dry form daily. Vitamin C: Take 1000-2000 mg. of calcium ascorbate up to three times daily with food.
Aloe vera contains a num ber of compounds necessary for wound healing, including vitamins c and E, two potent antioxidants, and varying amounts of proteins (at least 22 amino acids), complex carbohydrates, glucose, and vitamins and minerals, all of which are essential for the growth of new cells. Various studies have documented that this herb penetrates injured tissue, relieves pain, is anti-inflammatory and increases the blood supply to the injured area. Aloe may also help to stimulate the growth of new skin.
Recently, researchers tested two antioxidants, vitamins c and E, for their effectiveness in combating UVB and UVA damage and found that the best results were achieved with a combination of the two vitamins. If you have a severe sunburn, I recommend that you increase your intake of both of these vitamins until you are fully healed. Minerals Potassium—If you have a bad sunburn, you may also be suffering from dehydration or the loss of fluid and minerals through your sweat. If you are low in potassium, you will feel tired and sluggish.
