These protective nutrients include vitamins c and E and the trace mineral selenium. "I routinely suggest these nutrients to someone with angina," Dr. Weiss says.
In a study, supplements of vitamin E, along with vitamin C, vitamin A, and beta-carotene, reduced the incidence of angina. Vitamin E affects both cholesterol and platelets in a way that reduces the risk of heart disease, Dr. Weiss explains. He recommends 400 to 800 international units (IU) a day.
Vitamin C helps keep blood vessels open because it prevents the breakdown of nitric oxide, which helps promote blood flow, says Dr. Weiss. |

Most people will benefit from supplementing their healthy diets with flaxseed oil, vitamins c and E, magnesium, trace minerals, and friendly bacteria, like Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillus plantarum, following the guidelines presented in Chapters Six and Eight. Unless you are iron-deficient, avoid supplements that contain iron.
2. Get enough physical exercise. Commit yourself to thirty minutes a day of moderate- or high-intensity activity. Make exercise a family affair, or do it with a friend. Suggestions can be found on pages 170-72.
3. Explore meditation. |

Also, as far as supplements go, there are a lot you can choose from, such as vitamins c and E and selenium. There are also herbs such as red clover and black cohosh.
There's one thing to keep in mind, however. Almost all of the studies on breast cancer-preventing agents have been done on foods, not supplements, says naturopathic doctor Tori Hudson, N.D., professor at the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, Oregon, and author of Women's Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine. |

Their work is enhanced if there are not enough free radical-quenching nutrients, such as vitamins c and E, in the cell. White free radicals are normal products of metabolism, uncontrolled free-radical production plays a major role in the development of degenerative disease, including cancer and heart disease. Free radicals harmfully alter important molecules, such as proteins, enzymes, fats, even DNA, Other sources of free radicals include pesticides, industrial pollutants, smoking, alcohol, viruses, most infections, allergies, stress, even certain foods and excessive exercise. |

You need fruits, another vitally important group of foods, because they are packed with the antioxidants vitamins c and A. Antioxidants are especially important for people with insulin resistance. We'll discuss more about antioxidants later in this chapter under "Other Foods and Supplements." Fruits also provide folic acid, which you need for building new cells. Not getting enough folic acid causes anemia and can cause birth defects in a developing fetus during pregnancy. Often, when people learn that fruits are high in carbohydrates, they avoid them or limit them too much. |
The question is further complicated by recent research on the health benefits of taking lots of antioxidants, such as vitamins c and E. Vitamin C is mostly found in fruits, which are also packed with carbohydrates. Vitamin E is found in high-fat foods such as oils. Limiting carbohydrate and fat intake may also, unfortunately, limit your intake of these two nutrients.
If you consistently fail to consume the recommended amounts of foods from all food groups you may become deficient in important nutrients. |

Some examples of antioxidants include vitamins c and E. Melatonin has been found to be a much more potent antioxidant than either Vitamin C or E.4
Melatonin has also shown promise as a possible treatment for cancer. A study was conducted observing the effects of daily injections of melatonin given to 54 patients with advanced colon cancer. After two months, the results showed that melatonin appeared to delay the progression of cancer in 44% of the cases. |

The leaves furthermore contain vitamins c and b2, pigments and other ancillary substances. The drug has a wide range of therapeutic uses. It has a beneficial effect on the function of the liver and kidneys in that it prevents the formation of gallstones and kidney stones, and if they are already present it aids in their elimination. That is why it is generally recommended for digestive and bowel disorders. It also relieves rheumatic complaints, including painful arthroses caused by the excessive formation of uric acid salts in cartilage and tendons. |
They also contain vitamins c and P and hitherto unspecified substances with bactericidal properties. The drug is used as a diuretic and to induce perspiration in the treatment of flu and diseases associated with chilling. It also has a beneficial effect on digestive disorders accompanied by diarrhoea and may be used as a tonic in convalescence. It is used in the form of an infusion ?one teaspoon of the crumbled drug to one cup water ?taken three to five cups daily. Natural juice from the fruit makes a refreshing, invigorating drink. It contains twice as much vitamin C as lemons or oranges. |

NUTRITION
Fruits and vegetables are the primary source of vitamins c and E and the carotenoids, which protect us from the oxidant byproducts of normal metabolism. But only 9 percent of Americans eat the recommended five servings of fruits and vegetables a day.

An increasing number of physicians are routinely recommending EFAs along with other common supplements, such as calcium, magnesium, or vitamins c or E.
It's too early to predict which conditions will respond most favorably to EFA supplementation, but there's solid evidence that EFAj are among the more important building blocks for a healthy life. In the following pages we'll take a brief look at some of the conditions that have been shown to respond to treatment with EFAs.
EFAS AND KIDNEY DISEASE
The kidneys are incredibly complex organs, but their main jobs are pretty straightforward. |
Just as you can't survive without eating foods that contain iron or nutrients such as vitamins c or B12, you can't live without EFAs.
One of the main jobs of EFAs is to provide structural support for the outer walls, or membranes, of the body's cells. The EFAs make the membranes strong and also keep them fluid and pliable. The structural integrity of these membranes is critical for good health.
The EFAs are also involved in many of the body's metabolic processes. They help convert the nutrients from foods into usable forms of energy. |

ALFALFA SPROUTS
These sprouted seeds are terrific sources of vitamins c and K, minerals, and numerous micronutrients (often more than contained in the full-grown plant). Low in calories and high in fiber, they are a definite plus in salads—but only if they are organically grown! The FDA has advised even healthy adults, not just children or the elderly, to stop eating raw alfalfa, clover, and radish sprouts to avoid getting sick from food poisoning. Raw sprouts are frequendy contaminated with salmonella or E. coli bacteria. |
Honey has more fructose than glucose and contains small quantities of minerals, as well as traces of B-complex vitamins and vitamins c, D, and E.
?Because honey is almost twice as sweet as cane or beet sugars, less of it is needed to achieve the same sweetness.
?Some manufacturers will add sugar syrup to their honey because it's cheaper and lightens the honey's color and flavor. (Be suspicious of inexpensive brands that are unusually thin when poured.)

I supplemented the diet with magnesium and with extra doses of vitamins c and E. I advised Mike to keep his exposure to lawn maintenance chemicals to the minimum level permitted by his present job and to stop taking Indocin because of the damage it was doing to his intestine. Finally, I prescribed a strong antibiotic called floxacin to kill bacteria infecting his prostate.
A remarkable thing happened. Within a few days of starting the antibiotic, his joint pain and fatigue improved dramatically. When he stopped floxacin, the pain and fatigue returned. |

A sensible amount of vitamins c and E (400 mg/day) can restrict the amount of mutagenic compounds (like nitrosamines) in the digestive tract by 75 percent. Time after time studies show that individuals with low vitamin E intake are much more prone to cancers of the lung, breast, digestive tract, and throat.

Antioxidants (such as vitamins c and E) mate with free radicals to produce offspring that are relatively nonreactive and do not cause injury. Consider supplementation with coenzyme Q ro (ubiquinone), which helps support enzyme detoxification. It has known antioxidant effects in the energy centers of cells (mitochondria, where the P-450 enzyme system lives). Coenzyme Q10 is a nutritional supplement found in health-food stores and pharmacies.

Always take vitamins c and E when you are taking fish or flaxseed oil. These antioxidant vitamins preserve the omega-3s by protecting them from oxidation.
Flaxseed Oi
Whether the liquid or capsule form is used, calculate the amount of omega-3 based on the concentration of omega-3 fatty acid (alpha-linolenic acid) listed on the label.
Starting amount: 3 to 5 grams per day of alpha-linolenic acid is a reasonable starting point.
Maintenance: As with fish oil, flaxseed oil is often used long term. |
Surprisingly, there was no detectable relationship between lower cognitive impairment and consumption of any of the antioxidants (such as vitamins c and E) thought to protect the brain.
The protective powers of omega-3 fats may go far beyond the normal cognitive deficits of aging. |

The theory is that vitamins c and E, plus beta-carotene and other carotenoids, as well as the minerals selenium, copper, and manganese, may be instrumental in supporting good health through their actions in the body.
Antioxidants appear to protect cells from damaging oxygen-free radicals or oxidants. Oxygen-free radicals are released in the body as the result of the breakdown of food into fuel. These free radicals appear to damage cells in much the same way oxygen causes some metals to rust or oxidize. |
A study from the University of Maryland School of Medicine has found that consuming high doses of vitamins c and E before a high-fat meal may counter fat's ill effects. Researchers believe these vitamins somehow prevent triglycerides, a type of blood fat, from stopping blood vessels from releasing nitric oxide. Nitric oxide allows vessels to relax and widen, facilitating healthy blood flow to the heart.
Their study found that before a fatty meal, blood vessels could widen by 21 percent to accommodate the sudden rush of blood, but four hours after, could widen by only 8 percent. |

Vitamin B6 and pantothenic acid are also particularly important in times of stress. vitamins c and E and zinc promote the healing process. A comprehensive approach to good health includes practices that aid in stress management, regular exercise and proper diet. Diet and nutritional supplements provide the building blocks to form a healthier, more vital organism.
Health History
You may have heard of someone's grandparent who lived to a ripe old age with little attention to diet or nutritional supplements. This is quite possible. |
These would be the Basic Multiple formula, some extra vitamins c and E, and probably some natural carotenes. The extra E and carotenes can be taken any time of day, since they are fat soluble and not rapidly turned over. If you do not divide the water-soluble supplements into at least two doses per day, some of them will be less well-absorbed and excreted more rapidly. They will still benefit you, but perhaps not as much. If you are concerned that you might not tolerate some of the supplements because of unusual sensitivities, you might wish to start with one at a time for a few days. |
They include vitamins c, E and B complex, carotenes, bioflavonoids, and others. Of course, it is also wise to choose untreated foods as much as possible.
Stress Increases Needs
Although we seem to live in a time of great stress, I believe that this is not unique to our age. There have always been many stressors that have adversely influenced human health. Earlier generations did not have the advantage of high-dose nutrients to help diminish the toll of these stressors in their lives. |

There are many reports of a wide range of such deficiencies, including deficiencies in the minerals calcium, magnesium, selenium, manganese, copper, iron, and zinc and deficiencies in vitamins c, D, A, E, K, and a wide range of B vitamins. And herein lies a serious difficulty in recognizing celiac disease. Deficiency in each of the vitamins and minerals listed above will produce a set of symptoms that can usually be distinguished from each other. For each deficiency, there is often a range of possible symptoms and sets of symptoms. |

In fact, it is believed that vitamins c and E are primary in preventing free-radical-mediated tissue damage and cancer.
Studies show that tobacco smoke damages the fat, or low-density lipoproteins (LDL) circulating in the blood. LDLs do not attach to the blood vessel wall in their normal form. They must first be damaged by free radicals, then ingested by white blood cells to become foam cells. Foam cells give rise to yellow fatty streaks, which are a hallmark of heart disease. |

The Cancer Conquering Female: Defeating Breast Cancer and Other Female Cancers
Women have been at risk for breast cancer throughout human history. The first record of breast cancer was probably made by the Egyptians, yet in ancient times few Egyptian women seem to have died of the disease. In modern times, however, breast cancer has taken on a different guise. |
