Vitamin B12 can act both as a tumor promoter and a tumor-inhibitor; its tumor-enhancing activities are partially controlled by methionine. vitamin b6 (pyridoxine) is deficient in many cancer patients and has been used to enhance the outcome of radiotherapy in a controlled prospective trial.
6. Among the minerals, selenium has broad immunopotentiating and anticancer effects, whereas zinc is a selenium antagonist. While zinc is an essential nutrient for life, great care should be taken in using zinc supplements with cancer. |

These findings suggest the potential use of vitamin b6 as an antineoplastic agent," the Fels scientists concluded (2).
A lack of B6 also interferes with the formation of DNA (genetic material) and cuts down on the formation of disease-fighting antibodies. It interferes with other kinds of immune function as well (3). A1989 Russian study showed that injections of B6 stopped the formation of lung cancers in experimental animals that had previously received a carcinogen (4). |
| It is found in meat but also can be manufactured by the liver from two amino acids (lysine and methionine), provided that adequate amounts of other co-factors such as vitamin C, iron, nicotinic acid and vitamin b6 are present. There has been a long debate over whether carnitine is truly a vitamin. A recent review concluded that it is indeed an essential nutrient, especially in infancy, fasting, pregnancy and breast feeding, even though technically carnitine can be manufactured by the human body (1). |

And if you eat refined and processed food, a supplement of pyridoxine and all the rest of the vitamin B complex may be in order. We'll repeat: the refinement process is very hard on vitamins; it's better to eat whole, unprocessed foods for full vitamin value.

The conversion of homocysteine into methionine and cystathione is orchestrated by three of the B vitamins: folate, vitamin B12, and vitamin b6.
Plant proteins, by comparison with meat proteins, contain much less methionine. Since the ancient human diet was plant-based, there was much less methionine than in today's diet, and genes were selected that optimized the ability of the body to make methionine from homocysteine.
The enzymes that performed this function were helped by B vitamins and folic acid, which were also present in large amounts in plant foods. |

Vitamin C as well as vitamin b6 can also be useful in blocking allergic reactions. food allergies and arthritis
Some clinical ecologists estimate that from 80 to 90 percent of all cases of arthritis are either allergy induced or are allergylike reactions to some food the patient has eaten. The arthritis may also be related to an environmental factor to which the patient is sensitive, such as gas inhaled from constant proximity to a gas stove. |

Morning sickness has been the subject of much recent research; among treatments found effective by studies are acupressure on the pericardium 6 point, or the use of a wristband that puts pressure on this point; vitamin b6 supplementation; and powdered ginger capsules. One study concludes, however, that morning sickness may not be an unmitigated evil; it is connected with a lower miscarriage rate and may serve to protect the fetus from food poisoning. |

| It may sound a little far out, but we wouldn't dismiss the notion entirely. vitamin b6 is needed for the body to make serotonin, an important brain chemical. In fact, serotonin is the focus of intense research right now among scientists seeking biological explanations for depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
What about B12? It's important to be sure, with a varied list of roles that includes helping in the metabolism of fats and carbohydrates and in the production of cells, blood, and nerve fiber coverings. |

VITAMIN B12 (CYANOCOBALAMIN) Vitamin B12 is the most complex of the B vitamins. Every cell in the body depends upon it to function properly. It is especially vital to the cells in your bone marrow, gastrointestinal tract, and nervous system. It helps prevent fatty deposits from accumulating in your liver, and helps maintain normal weight. |

After five years, the results were more than impressive. Those people with cancer who received the RDA level of vitamins and minerals had a tumor recurrence rate of 91 percent. Those who took the megadose vitamins, in contrast, had a recurrence rate of only 41 percent.44

A number of drugs reduce the levels of vitamin b6 and folic acid circulating in the bloodstream. Anticonvulsants, especially Dilantin, are the best-known culprits, but oral contraceptives; estrogen replacement drugs such as Premarin, Estrace, and Estraderm; aspirin; and blood pressure drugs such as Apresoline, Dyazide, and Maxzide may also lower the amounts of one or another of these crucial B vitamins in the body. Cholesterol medicines such as Questran, corticosteroids, the potent rheumatoid arthritis medicine methotrexate, and even alcohol can also have this effect. |

Experiments using large doses of vitamins have included niacin therapy for schizophrenia, vitamin C for cancer and viral illnesses, and vitamin b6 for carpal tunnel syndrome. The results of these and other nutrition studies have generated a lot of media attention. One of the main criticisms of those who use orthomolecular medicine is that their research has little support from clinical trials.
Clinical trials
Much of the information we have about the effects of vitamins comes from clinical trials. A clinical trial is an experiment conducted with patients as subjects. |
| Vitamin B is a complex of eight water soluble vitamins including thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin b6, pantothenic acid, folic acid, biotin and vitamin B12. These vitamins act together in the body and if they are taken as supplements, they should be consumed in the proper ratios. Choline, inositol and PABA are part of the B complex in food but are regarded as factors rather than vitamins. As the B vitamins are water soluble, excesses are excreted in the urine rather than stored, and a daily intake is necessary to maintain health. |
| Interactions with other nutrients
Riboflavin is necessary for the activation of vitamin b6 and is also necessary for the conversion of tryptophan to niacin.
Interactions with drugs
Sulfa drugs, anti-malarial drugs, estrogen, cathartic agents and alcohol may interfere with riboflavin metabolism. High doses of riboflavin can reduce the effectiveness of the anticancer drug methotrexate. Some antibiotics and phenothiazine drugs may increase riboflavin excretion.
Riboflavin must be activated in the liver. This activation may be inhibited by major tranquilizers, and some antidepressants. |
| The coenzyme forms of vitamin b6 are pyridoxal 5' phosphate and pyridoxamine 5' phosphate, and these are necessary for nearly 100 enzymatic reactions. These include the synthesis and breakdown of amino acids, the conversion of amino acids to carbohydrate or fat, and the conversion of one type of fat to another. Thus, it is involved in the manufacture of most protein-related compounds and plays a role in almost all bodily processes. |
