In addition, scientific studies have shown the following supplements to be useful.
ž vitamin b6. Deficiency of this key B vitamin appears to be a major cause of heart disease. It can be taken as part of a good quality multivitamin or a B-complex combination. Typical dosage: 25 to 50 milligrams of Bb per day.
ž Vitamin E. One form of this vitamin inhibits the body's cholesterol production. Typical dosage: 25 to 100 milligrams of the tocotrienol form per day.
ž Magnesium. It may help decrease plaque formation. Typical dosage: 500 to 1,000 milligrams per day. |

Many nutrients also have immune-modulating effects, such as coenzyme Q10, selenium, zinc, and vitamin b6, and have already been discussed in the chapter on antioxidants. However, one vitamin, folic acid, and a trace mineral, germanium, that I have not discussed, are worth mentioning here for their immune-enhancing properties.
Folic Acid: Folic acid, or folate, is necessary for DNA synthesis. It keeps homocysteine levels within normal range, and is used to make

Beta-carotene supplements may color urine slightly yellow or orange, while vitamin b6 may evoke a distinctive smell. Urine turns green with a foul odor after you eat asparagus. The drug Risanpin, an antibiotic usually prescribed for tuberculosis or staph infections, can turn urine a shade of blue or green. And some diagnostic drugs will paint your urine a peculiar hue, but they're prescribed for that express purpose.
Very yellow urine means you're dehydrated and not drinking enough water. |
| Niebyl conducted a study in which women who took 25 milligrams of vitamin b6 three times daily for three days reduced severe nausea. Women who took a placebo—a fake, look-alike pill—had no benefit. But B6 only worked for severe cases. "The nutrient had no effect on mild nausea," says Dr. Niebyl. Ask your doctor whether B6 supplements are right for you. (Pregnant women should check with their doctors before taking any over-the-counter medications or nutritional supplements.)

Diarrhea
WHEN TO SEE YOUR DOCTOR
• You have diarrhea for more than one week.
• You're also losing weight.
What Your Symptom Is Telling You
Diaxrhea may very well be the thunderstorm of stomach problems—a painful, sometimes embarrassing display of both sound and fury. But you have to really search to find a silver lining behind this dark digestive cloud. In fact, doctors say the best you can do is to learn how to weather the storm or avoid it altogether. |

Galland, in his book Superimmunity for Kids, suggests one hundred milligrams of vitamin b6 plus a ten-milligram injection of vitamin K to combat morning sickness. This often works within a few days. If a vitamin K injection is not available, ten milligrams of vitamin K per day orally will work, but it will take longer. I only recommend this latter approach if nothing else is successful.
In the second trimester the mother's weight gain more obviously begins.
How much one should gain varies according to constitutional type and general state of health. |
| General B-vitamin support during pregnancy is important for development of the body and its nervous system. vitamin b6 is particularly important for making prostaglandins to support the immune system and aiding the general metabolic function of the brain cells. It also helps create healthy nerves and mucous membranes. Folic acid is important for development of the nervous system, building white blood cells for the immune system, and preventing the congenital defect called spina bifida occulta. The need for folic acid doubles during pregnancy. |

Note: An iron deficiency is often due to either an insufficient amount of this element in the diet or blood loss, but it could also be due to a deficiency of vitamin b6 or B12. Although the body recycles some of its own iron, it still needs to take in an amount from external sources. It is advised that vitamin C be taken at the same time that we eat iron-rich foods. Iron deficiency is common among women, who need 2 mg a day to the 1 mg required by men. |

In another study, 60 percent of patients diagnosed with "drug-resistant major depressive disorders" achieved complete relief from depression after less than one week on a course of deprenyl, phenylalanine (1,000 to 6,000 mg daily), and vitamin b6 (100 mg daily). These patients had been suffering from a variety of serious depressive illnesses, including bipolar type II depression, schizoaffective disorder, seasonal affective disorder, and recurrent unipolar depression. |

Foods high in vitamin b6 (pyridoxine) are helpful. As this water-soluble vitamin tends to get lost in cooking, it is best to include plenty of raw fruits and vegetables in the diet. Leafy green vegetables are especially high in B6. Lecithin-rich soy products, such as tofu and tempeh, are important as well.

| B-complex vitamins, particularly vitamin b6, folic acid and vitamin B12, are crucial for sound mental health, says Somer. "And you don't have to be deficient in these vitamins to feel the effects," she says. "Just being on the borderline can cause depressive symptoms."
This makes a lot of sense, say experts, when you consider that overt deficiencies of B vitamins may cause serious psychiatric problems like dementia and paranoia. It doesn't happen that you're fine one day and have dementia the next, says Somer. Your mood gradually falls along the way. |
| And surveys show that many women consume less than the two milligrams of vitamin b6 they need each day. Women are also the most frequent victims of depression."

| It's one of the best sources of the B-complex vitamins thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin b6, pantothenic acid, biotin and folic acid. It also has trace minerals like chromium and selenium, plus protein.
Unfortunately, overzealous brewer's yeast boosters have credited it with everything except bringing back the dead, so it's been hard to separate truth from fiction. By the sheer virtue of its nutritional value, however, it's a good supplement, says Dr. Gerson. |
| Key nutrients for keeping your genes strong and healthy include the B vitamins folic acid, vitamin b6, pantothenic acid, riboflavin, bi-otin and choline. Other gene-boosters are vitamin C and the minerals zinc, magnesium, manganese, chromium and selenium.
If you're going to try supplementing your gene pool anyway, proponents suggest not exceeding 1.5 grams daily. Also, if you have a tendency to develop gout, you should see your doctor before trying any nucleic supplements. They produce excessive uric acid in the body, which may trigger a gout attack.

Autistic individuals also tend to have vitamin and mineral deficiencies, particularly shortages of zinc, selenium, vitamin b6, and magnesium. Fortunately, it is easy to test for these problems and to correct them.
Sometimes autism is the result of subclinical hypothyroidism, a problem detected not by blood tests, but by temperature. If low body temperature is accompanied by cold hands and feet, dry skin, and memory and concentration problems, subclinical hypothyroidism may be at the root of the problem. |
| Migraines induced by hormonal imbalances can be combated with supplements that stabilize hormonal levels, such as vitamin b6, and evening primrose oil. Migraines characterized by a meridian imbalance can be treated by either an acupuncturist, who will rely upon the use of needles, or a kinesiologist, who will manipulate the meridians using a finger. Either type of practitioner can be effective in restoring the balance of energy. |

During breast feeding it is important to continue to avoid all toxic substances, since most of it is transmitted through the breast milk. Breast feeding is so far superior to any other approach to infant nutrition that it is hard to understand how the medical profession moved away from this after World War II. |

Vitamin B6 can cause some problems if it is taken in extremely high dosages, and the mineral iron can promote free-radical damage if ingested in large quantities. Pregnant women who take more than 10,000 units daily of vitamin A increase the risk of serious birth defects by 240 percent and should always consult their obstetrician before taking any vitamin supplements or other concentrated nutrients.
All in all, though, there are very few risk factors associated with intake of high dosages of vitamins. Most of the risk factors that exist are theoretical rather than practical. |

THE FUTURE ROLE OF STEM CELLS FOR LONGEVITY
Stem cells are the "mother cells" of all the cells in our body. They have the capacity to repair any tissue damage in the body, which is why longevity medicine experts are excited about their potential to extend life span and retain the healthy nature of organs in the body. There are three types of stem cells—fetal, umbilical, and adult.

Excessive iron supplies may damage the tissues and unless accompanied by adequate amounts of vitamin b6 death may result.
The absence of this vitamin may also cause severe atherosclerosis, with the arteries in the heart, pancreas, kidneys, abdomen, limbs, muscles, and all tissues becoming clogged with fatty deposits. When the pancreas cannot function well, its ability to supply insulin for the control of carbohydrates is damaged and a lack of insulin is the immediate cause of diabetes mellitus.
The loss of hair may also be the result of deficiency of this vitamin. |

VITAMIN B12
Value. This vitamin is essential for the blood-forming organs of the bone marrow if they are to function properly. Also, the nervous system depends upon this vitamin for nutrition. One of the ingredients of this vitamin is cobalt, and it appears from the study of scientific materials that Vitamin B12 is now being referred to as cobalamin, because of the importance of cobalt in the diet. |
