The nicotinic acid in tomatoes helps to reduce cholesterol in the blood, while the vitamin k in tomatoes helps to prevent hemorrhages. Preparation: There are innumerable ways of preparing tomatoes, but the most popular and healthiest is to simply slice them and eat them as they are in their natural state. Of course, with tomatoes, as with other plants, there is a considerable difference between plants grown in rich, organic soil without pesticides and plants grown in depleted soil heavily saturated with poisons for destruction of insects.

Consumption of other essenrial nutrients, such as chromium and vitamin k, which are essential in blood-sugar regulation and bone health, is also suspected to be low. Folic acid is of particular concern, since the average woman consumes only half the optimal dose. Low folic acid intakes increase the risk for neural tube defects, cancer, heart disease, depression, and memory loss. According to Dr. Willett, vitamin B6, vitamin D, and vitamin E also are typically low in many people's diets.

In addition to broccoli, lettuce, and other leafy vegetables, foods rich in vitamin k include pork, liver, and vegetable oils. Vitamin A deficiency, another problem that often arises from gluten consumption, can cause stunted growth in children and can also impact on adult bones. Because this vitamin coordinates both bone-building and bone-destroying cells, a deficiency may cause a wide range of bone abnormalities. To ensure sufficient vitamin A in your diet, eat foods such as fish, flax, and liver, which are rich in this important vitamin. BONES ARE VERY MUCH ALIVE Bones are living tissue.

Dietary vitamin k has the effect of remedying all of the above conditions (49-52). Alfalfa has also been shown to possess antibacterial action against gram negative bacteria (such as Salmonella typhi) (53), and it contains at least one protein with known antitumor activity (54). It is important to realize that Alfalfa is also fiber. As such it has been shown, along with Bran and Pectin to bind and neutralize various types of agents carcinogenic to the colon (55).

The normal flora maintain healthy intestinal function, and they also produce some vitamins, including vitamin k and some B vitamins. They are useful for the treatment of constipation or diarrhea and help manage both irritable colon and ulcerative colitis. In addition, they have antifungal, antibacterial and antiviral properties. These bacteria also produce some anticancer substances, and they help degrade some carcinogens. The vaginal flora of healthy women are predominantly lactobacilli. Supplements of lactobacilli can prevent and treat vaginal, urinary tract and intestinal infections.

It also contains an anti-hemorrhage factor believed to be vitamin k. Honey is assimilated rapidly and easily, and it is very soothing to the delicate membranes of the digestive tract. WU-PA-HO English Name: Peppermint Botanical Name: Mentha piperita Peppermint grows almost everywhere in China, but since the supply coming from Suchou is reputed to be of the best quality, the plant is called Wu-pa-ho, Wu being the former name for Suchou. Their therapeutic value is scientifically defined as follows: • Vitamin A: Important for keeping the mucous linings of the stomach healthy. • Vitamin K: Helps the blood clot properly and protects against hemorrhages. • Vitamin U: This vitamin is known as the anti-peptic ulcer dietary factor. It is also present in cabbage juice and was discovered in 1949 by Dr. Garnett Cheney, a physician from Stanford Medical School. Dr. Cheney treated his ulcer patients with cabbage juice and found that 62 out of 65 of his patients responded in half the time necessary for the usual type ulcer therapy.

Vitamin C is necessary for blood vessel integrity, while vitamin k is necessary for the synthesis of several of the substances participating in coagulation. Reparative Processes Healing and regeneration after injury or disease are very important in the story of human survival. We would be in a sorry state if blisters and cuts never healed and broken bones never knitted. A simple cut on the finger will illustrate the process of wound healing.
Some infants will also require vitamin k. In addition, because pancreatic insufficiency is very common in CF, supplements of pancreatic material known as pancreatin should be given with each meal in powder or tablet form. A current theory is that patients with CF have a deficiency in essential fatty acids (American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, January, 1981). Deficient sodium transport in CF cells has also been discovered by Harvard researchers, who may have found a way to screen for the CF gene (New England Journal of Medicine, January 1, 1981).

Anyone taking the drug Coumadin (warfarin) should strictly avoid supplementing with vitamin k because of micronutrient-drug interactions. • Avoid extra enzymes, time-release preparations, or chelated preparations, since they add little value. They are unproven and generally ineffective. • If you are on blood thinners (e.g., Coumadin), use caution with vitamin E and check with your physician before use. • Avoid "stress-tabs" or taking large doses of B-vitamins.

There are no Daily Values for other nutrients, such as vitamin k, manganese, selenium and chromium, but this does not mean they are unimportant. Healthy Dietary Allowances My own recommendations of minimums for basic health are clearly different from the RDA levels and the Daily Values. They reflect both food sources and extra nutrients derived from dietary supplements. For basic preventive medicine, free-radical protection, and health enhancement I recommend: Vitamin A (& beta-carotene)........................ 25,000 IU Vitamin C.......................................................

Calcium interacts with several vitamins, in particular, vitamin D and vitamin k. Interactions with drugs Some diuretics, corticosteroids and antidepressants can lead to calcium deficiency. Calcium supplements may decrease the effectiveness of tetracycline antibiotics; the anticonvulsant, phenytoin; and aspirin; and should not be taken at the same time as any of these drugs. Cautions Calcium supplements should not be used in people who have impaired kidney function, cardiac arrhythmias, a history of kidney or bladder stones, constipation or dehydration.
Those taking anticoagulants should keep their intake of vitamin k foods relatively constant. Large doses of vitamin C may also affect the action of anticoagulants. Vitamin E can enhance the action of anticoagulant drugs on blood clotting and should not be taken in very large doses. However, the results of a 1996 study in which 21 people taking chronic warfarin therapy received either vitamin E or placebo suggest that vitamin E can safely be given to patients who require chronic warfarin therapy.
They improve the efficiency of your digestive system; manufacture some vitamins, including biotin and vitamin K; and produce antibacterial substances which kill or deactivate harmful bacteria. Therapeutic uses of supplements Probiotics are used to prevent and treat antibiotic-induced diarrhea, yeast infections and urinary tract infections. They may also help to protect against colon cancer and the adverse effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Some evidence suggests that probiotics may help to treat allergies and skin conditions, reduce high cholesterol, and improve immunity.
Antibiotics can kill not only harmful bacteria but also the beneficial bacteria that produce vitamin k. Antibiotics may reduce vitamin C stores. The antibiotic, isoniazid, which is often used to treat tuberculosis, can cause nerve damage due to its inhibition of vitamin B6 action. Patients with diabetes, malnutrition, or alcoholism may be at higher risk and supplements may be useful to protect against these problems.
In the early 1990s, researchers reported a possible increase in the risk of childhood cancers in children who were given vitamin k injections after birth. Subsequent studies suggest that the risk cannot be totally ruled out, but if it exists it is likely to be small. (See page 177 for more information.) Because of the possibility of an increased risk of cancer, researchers have investigated alternatives to injection.
Patients with vitamin k deficiency should use aspirin cautiously as increased bleeding may result. Vitamin A may protect against stomach ulcers and bleeding in those taking aspirin. Aspirin may also lead to deficiencies of folic acid, thiamin, vitamin C, potassium and vitamin B12 if used for a long time. Calcium decreases the absorption of aspirin if taken at the same time. The nicotinamide form of niacin causes flushing when taken in large doses. This is caused by blood vessel dilatation, and pretreatment with aspirin may inhibit this effect, which some people find unpleasant.

Alfalfa is one of the few foods with good levels of vitamin k, the blood-clotting vitamin. People who use alfalfa take it mainly as a natural supportive supplement for its nutrient content, much as they might take brewer's yeast or kelp. Alfalfa seeds are commonly sprouted, which are also highly nutritious. No grand claims are made for alfalfa, though recent research suggests that both the alfalfa plant and powdered alfalfa seed have a cholesterol-lowering and antiatherosclerotic effect. It is thought that the saponins contained in alfalfa help bind cholesterol and bile salts in the gut.
