The worst aspect of osteoporosis is that it puts women at risk for life-threatening bone fractures. Estrogen and progesterone replacement therapy appears to make the biggest impact on the prevention of osteoporosis and fractures in postmenopausal women. Evidence suggests that adequate calcium intake throughout a woman's lifetime is more likely to prevent osteoporosis than if started at the time of menopause. Fluoride supplementation looks promising as another preventive measure. |

Natural Prescription for Bruising
• To limit the development of bruises, apply cold to the site of a bump immediately.
• If you bruise easily, check your medications, including aspirin, steroids, antidepressants, asthma medications, and anticoagulant drug therapies, which all cause easy bruising. Blood thinners will also cause you to bruise. Discuss this problem with your doctor. If aspirin is causing the bruising, limit your intake to one baby aspirin (60 mg.) every other day (if you're taking them to fight heart disease). | Vitamin K: Use only under a doctor's supervision. See information above. burning mouth and tongue this is an odd condition that I've encountered a number of times among my patients who complain of a hot, burning feeling in the mouth and on the tongue. While it may seem like a small matter, it can be quite troubling to sufferers.
There are a number of causes for a burning mouth—or glossodynia, which means "tongue pain"—and you have to find the one that triggers your problem by a process of elimination. Here are the major causes:
In my experience, one of the most common cause is food allergies. | Dr. Gary Null See book keywords and concepts | Green leafy vegetables contain vitamin k, beta carotene, vitamin C, fiber, calcium, and magnesium, which enhance the bones. Other calcium-rich foods include broccoli, milk, nuts, and seeds. Sesame seeds have high calcium content. The Chinese, who as mentioned earlier have low rates of osteoporosis, use sesame often in their foods, and cook with sesame seed oil.
Foods to avoid include sugar, caffeine, carbonated sodas, and alcohol, as these contribute to bone loss. Too much protein from chicken, fish, eggs, and meat are also contraindicated. | Knapen et at, "The Effect of vitamin k Supplementation on Circulating Osteocalcin (Bone Gla Protein) and Urinary Calcium Excretion," Annals of Internal Medicine 111 (1989): 1001-5.
A study of 40 osteoporotic patients monitored the effectiveness of treatment with essential fatty acids (evening primrose oil, fish oil, and a mixture of the two). The therapeutic effect was measured by monitoring biochemical markers of bone turnover. The results were that EFAs reduced urinary excretion of calcium and increased calcium deposit in bones. | An article recommends the following supplements for incorporation into the interstitial cystitis treatment protocol: vitamins C, D, B12, and B6, as well as bioflavonoids, zinc, vitamin k, calcium, magnesium, quercetin, EFA's Calc Sulph and Kali Sulph cell salts, Zea mays (sweet corn), cranberry, and kava kava. Diathermy, sitz baths, and Kegel exercises may also help.

Glucocorticoid medications, such as prednisone, not only impair calcium absorption, but also inhibit bone formation, which can lead to osteoporosis. Research has found that taking more than 7. | Seattle, Washington, proposes that calcium is receiving more attention than it deserves and that other nutrients may be equally critical to the prevention of osteoporosis. "Vitamin K, silicon, boron, folic acid, magnesium, and manganese all play a role in bone building and need to be consumed through diet or supplements," he says.To prevent osteoporosis, you must get sufficient levels and the proper ratio of these bone nutrients. Unfortunately, they are often deficient in the modern diet, which may be one of the reasons why osteoporosis is a disease ofWestern civilization. Bioflavonoids—The first bioflavonoid was called vitamin P for "permeability factor"; these blue and red pigments from fruits are needed along with vitamin C to prevent bleeding problems. Supplements of mixed bioflavonoids are available in the health-food store. Eating plenty of berries and grapes will help, too. |

By inhibiting proper nutrient absorption, bacterial overgrowth of the small intestine can lead to systemic disorders such as altered permeability, anemia and weight loss, osteomalacia and vitamin k deficiency.3 Bacterial overgrowth of the small intestine may also contribute to maldigestion and malabsorption. It frequently is a complication of parasitic infection. Patients with pancreatic insufficiency secondary to chronic pancreatitis are prone to developing bacterial overgrowth of the small intestine.4 As can be seen from Table 7. | Potential deficiencies of nutrients such as vitamin B12, vitamin k, and calcium should be considered (see Ch. 19).5
Treatment of underlying causes
Bacterial overgrowth of the small intestine may recur if the root causes are not eradicated (Table 7.2). Hypo-chlorhydria and achlorhydria limit the body's ability to utilize nutrients from food and supplements. With low gastric acid, ingested food is not adequately sterilized, and normal colonic bacteria may move upstream into the small intestine, causing the return of bacterial overgrowth. | Committee on Diet, Nutrition, and Cancer, Assembly of Life Sciences National Research Council See book keywords and concepts | In contrast, little attention has been paid to the B vitamins and others such as vitamin k. This formula should be used only after discussion with your obstetrician. You will note that the ranges of some of the vitamins are set lower than the basic formulas for men and women. The probability of any adverse effects from these vitamins on the fetus is extremely low even at the higher doses of the above formulas, but, to err on the side of caution, the upper dose limits are lowered here. Compare your supplement formula with the following formula to determine if yours is adequate. There are some good formulas available. | Research suggests that the addition of fluoride may be useful (see fluoride under Minerals), and preliminary work suggests that manganese, boron and vitamin k may offer some additional protection as well.
There are still no convincing studies that indicate vitamin D would be helpful in protecting against osteoporosis except in the care of steroid (cortisone)-induced osteoporosis. Vitamin D might help prevent osteoporosis in those regularly taking cortisone. Calcitriol may hold more promise in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis.
