Other important supplements include magnesium citrate, vitamin D, vitamin C, vitamin k, beta-carotene, selenium, boron, strontium, folic acid, silica, copper, zinc, and manganese. A balanced vitamin/mineral supplement can supply most of these nutrients, but it is advisable to supplement the zinc separately in order to avoid decreased nutrient absorption. A hormonal supplement that can be of value is DHEA, a substance that is depleted during the later years of life and that is useful in the treatment of chronic aging symptoms.

That's why you can be eating well but still have a calcium deficiency or a deficiency of vitamin k, which helps your blood clot, or a deficiency of vitamin A, which helps with night vision and skin health." Cutting gluten, says Dr. Gebhard, is the answer. Gluten is a protein in the wheat kernel, but it is also found in barley, rye, oats, buckwheat, triticale and amaranth. "Then the healing can take place, which may require weeks or even months," he says. "Even when healed, a person with gluten intolerance should avoid all gluten; even small amounts can cause a reaction.

With Coumadin it is important to keep your vitamin k intake relatively constant. Too much of this nutrient, found primarily in green vegetables, can interfere with the anti-clotting action of the drug, and too little might lead to excessive bleeding. ICC Alternatives — There are many natural blood thinners, including garlic, ginkgo biloba and fish oil, or omega-3. Aspirin is also a blood thinner and is less dangerous than Coumadin.

If someone needs to become more acid, one could use ascorbic acid C and vitamin A in moderation to achieve this effect. vitamin k is alkalinizing and helps to keep calcium, one of the main alkalinizing minerals, in its ionizable form in the blood serum. The ionizable form of calcium is the utilizable form in the blood. The intelligent use of supplements requires a thorough understanding of their effects on the acid-base balance of the organism. The point again is one of awareness.
The outer leaf of cabbage is high in vitamin k. Wheat-grass juice is an excellent alkalinizer. 9. Use vegetarian digestive enzymes to improve poor digestion of complex carbohydrates. The most concentrated sources of these are high in amylase and extracted from vegetarian sources. 10. Use plant enzymes to improve poor fat digestion and therefore prevent the production of extra acids from incomplete metabolic breakdown. 11. Keep emotionally balanced and avoid creating acid emotions. 12. Live a balanced, low-stress lifestyle. 13. Detox and heal the kidneys, liver, and bowel. 14.

Nutritional deficiencies such as a lack of vitamin C or vitamin k can lead to easier than normal bruising, however, and in rare cases an underlying illness such as hemophilia, leukemia, or purpura may be behind a tendency to bruise easily and often. In both hemophilia and leukemia, the blood does not clot as it should, so it is more likely to leak out of an injured vessel to form a bruise. Purpura is a condition in which bruising can occur even without any particular injury. It is believed to occur because the small blood vessels, for some unknown reason, are more fragile than normal.
Anticoagulants (blood-thinners) Warfarin (Coumadin) Eating foods high in vitamin k can counteract the effects of this drug, decreasing its effectiveness. Limit your consumption of green leafy vegetables such as spinach, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and others. Some antiprotozoals/ antibiotics, used to treat parasitic and bacterial infection Metronidazole (Flagyl, Protostat) Consumption of alcohol can cause flushing, abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, and/or headaches. Avoid alcoholic beverages while taking this drug and for three days thereafter.
In addition, vitamin k is synthesized by "friendly" bacteria in the intestines. If you take a course of antibiotics, these drugs will destroy the friendly bacteria along with the bad, and vitamin-K production may suffer as a result. Other drugs, including aspirin, steroids, anticoagulants, and asthma medication, can also thin the blood and make you more prone to bruising. If you develop a bruise at the slightest injury, or often discover a black-and-blue mark and have no idea how you got it, discuss this with your doctor.
Phytonadione (Mephy-ton) is a prescription drug that is often recommended to correct low levels of vitamin k. ¦ A hematoma may have to be removed or drained surgically, depending on its severity and location. NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS ¦ To help restore the integrity of blood-vessel walls, take a vitamin-C formula that contains bioflavonoids. Take 500 milligrams of each twice a day for two to three weeks. Then take 500 milligrams daily for one month. If the bruising seems excessive, continue taking vitamin C for an additional two to three more months.
Even conventional medicine recommends nutritional supplementation for this illness, particularly supplementation with folic acid and/or iron for certain anemias and vitamin k for bleeding problems. ¦ A balanced diet is recommended, although protein may be restricted if the disease is severe enough that hepatic encephalopathy or coma has occurred. ¦ Ascites is handled first by restricting salt intake. If this proves insufficient, diuretics are prescribed.
In addition, they provide chlorophyll and vitamin k, essential for normal blood clotting. These nutrients are especially important if you experience heavy bleeding. Take a green-foods supplement as directed on the product label. ¦ If hypothyroidism is a problem, take 150 milligrams of kelp three times daily. This sea vegetable is high in iodine, which strengthens thyroid function. It is also high in iron, which is an important nutrient for the woman with heavy menstrual bleeding. Many women with endometriosis are deficient in iron.

This action of lapachol appears similar to that of 4-hydroxy-coumarin anticoagulants - they bind to the oxidized form of the vitamin k reductases.56 Further studies by Preusch on rat liver microsomes showed lapachol inhibits another enzyme linked to blood coagulation.57 Some writers link this anticoagulant activity to the anticancer applications of pau d'arco. Lapachol has been found to have antiulcerogenic effects in experimental animals.

They're rich in vitamin k, which your body needs to build a urinary substance that normally prevents the formation of stones. Magnesium and vitamin B6 also reduce stone formation; include foods rich in these nutrients or take a daily supplement, 50 to 100 milligrams of each per day. In general, people with kidney stones shouldn't take calcium supplements. But if you need the extra calcium, take the citrate form, which is less likely to contribute to stones. At meals, set a tall, cool glass of water by your plate—and a pitcher from which to refill it.

CoQ10 is one of those nutrients, like vitamin k, that our bodies make for themselves, although we also eat it in foods like soybeans, vegetable oils and meats. It's similar in structure to a vitamin, and it has super antioxidant powers like vitamins C and E and beta-carotene. These qualities alone make it a good supplement for those with CFS. But there's more. This supernutrient acts like a spark plug for your body, reacting with other enzymes so your cells can convert protein, carbohydrates and fats into energy.

Vitamin E: If you are taking aspirin or other blood thinners or have a vitamin k deficiency, check with your doctor before taking vitamin E, which is also a blood thinner. If you have an overactive thyroid, diabetes, high blood pressure, or rheumatic heart disease, build up your dose of vitamin E slowly. Start with a very low dose of 50-100 IU, and gradually increase your dose by 100 IU each month until you reach between 400-800 IU. Ephedra: This herb, a natural antihistamine, has long been used as a treatment for colds, flu, and respiratory problems.
Acidophilus—These friendly bacteria that live in the intestine synthesize vitamin k, which is essential for the formation of osteocalcin. Why is this important in regard to osteoporosis? Osteocalcin enables calcium to be crystallized and transported into the bones. A low level of osteo-:alcin is a risk factor for developing osteoporosis. Acidophilus is found n unpasteurized yogurt (which is also a terrific source of calcium) and s available in the form of crystals or powder which can be added to uice or food.

These grasses are a concentrated source of chlorophyll, B vitamins, vitamin k for bone metabolism, minerals, and enzymes. A teaspoon a day of the powder can be stirred into juice. Chlorophyll can be used by itself and is an excellent blood cleanser and purifier—cooling, calming, and not extremely strong, so it's appropriate for kids. It's also a good source of magnesium. Interestingly, it's the same molecule as hemoglobin, except instead of iron, chlorophyll has magnesium, which makes chlorophyll green and hemoglobin red.

In contrast, less attention has been paid to the B vitamins and others such as vitamin k. Chapter 9 contains more detailed information on the evidence summarized below. Vitamin A. A growing accumulation of epidemiological evidence indicates that there is an inverse relationship between the risk of cancer and the consumption of foods that contain vitamin A (e.g., liver) or its precursors (e.g., the carotenoids in green and yellow vegetables). Most of the data do not show whether the effects are due to carotenoids, to vitamin A itself, or to some other constituent of these foods.

It is structurally related to vitamin k, and has definite anticancer activity. Another key ingredient is a related compound, xyloidone. But lapachol also can cause significant toxicity in people, so that in order to achieve sufficiently high doses one risks considerable toxicity, as well (324a). Lapachol is normally found as a yellow powder, similar to curry powder, on the surface of the timber of various Tabebuia, Tecoma and Bignonia species. When purified, lapachol has a bright, almost iridescent, yellow color.
