If any of these conditions apply to you and you suffer from easy bruising, you should discuss the possibility of vitamin k supplementation with your doctor. You should take vitamin k only under a doctor's supervision.
Natural Prescription for Bruising
• To limit the development of bruises, apply cold to the site of a bump immediately.
• If you bruise easily, check your medications, including aspirin, steroids, antidepressants, asthma medications, and anticoagulant drug therapies, which all cause easy bruising. Blood thinners will also cause you to bruise. |

The fungi crowd out the good bacteria, such as Lactobacillus, which are responsible for synthesizing a special clotting factor: vitamin k. Killing the yeasts allows the return of the good bacteria, thus helping to normalize vitamin k synthesis.
Bruise Combat Kit
• oil of oregano — apply topically to dissipate the bruises (it works for this rather dramatically).
• Flavin-C — take 3 capsules three times daily.
• oil of rosemary (rich in flavonoids) — take 5 to 10 drops twice daily.
• WildPower Tea — drink one or two cups of this brew daily. |

Water-Soluble Vitamins
Thiamine (Vitamin B /)
Thiamine, or vitamin Bl, was the first B vitamin discovered. It has an interesting history that is told on page 321. Thiamine functions as part of the enzyme thiamine pyrophosphate, or TPP, which is essential for energy production, carbohydrate metabolism, and nerve cell function. |

They do battle with foreign bacteria that might otherwise cause infection; they manufacture some vitamins, such as vitamin K; and they keep the growth of a fungal yeast called Candida albicans under control. All told, we play host to 100 trillion friendly bacteria belonging to at least 400 different species.
Prescription drugs such as antibiotics and steroids, undue stress, and nutritional imbalances all contribute to the demise of good bacteria. When their numbers are low, bad bacteria and Candida albicans become overgrown. Yeast overgrowth in particular can cause many unpleasant symptoms. |

Current research seems to indicate it helps maintain bone mass in the elderly and prevents osteoporosis (see). vitamin k antagonizes the action of anticoagulants and has been used as an antidote in managing overdosages or excessive responses to the latter. The excessive use of vitamin K-containing substances—drugs or dietary items such as green leafy vegetables—should be avoided in patients receiving anticoagulants. This problem results in colicky-like cramps and either diarrhea or constipation, and is caused by a depletion of vitamin k as well as an imbalance of the friendly and unfriendly bacteria in the intestinal tract.
These drugs are also particularly hard on kidney and liver function and have caused liver dysfunction, jaundice, and kidney failure. Because of this, your physician should monitor you closely if you are elderly or debilitated. Children should also be watched closely for any indications of kidney or liver system dysfunction. These drugs can cause seizures in people with kidney problems. |

A deficiency of vitamin k leads to abnormal prothrombin synthesis and a reduction in activity of the blood-clotting mechanism. Warfarin has also been used as a rat poison.
Warfarin and nicoumalone are examples of fully synthetic agents that have been developed from a natural product template.
The psoralens are coumarins that possess a furan ring and are sometimes known as furocoumarins or furanocoumarins because of this ring. Examples are psoralen, bergapten, xanthotoxin and isopimpinellin (Fig. 6.22). |

Vitamin D and vitamin k also help to orchestrate the movement of calcium into bones.
The hormones testosterone, estrogen, and progesterone are also actively involved in the making and unmaking of bone. Testosterone, and progesterone build bone, while estrogen slows bone loss.
In osteoporosis, the old bone is being reabsorbed faster than new bone is being made, causing the bones to lose density and become thinner and more porous. The integrity and strength of our bones is related to bone mass and density. The bones of a woman with osteoporosis gradually become thinner and more fragile. |

It is used in rodenticides and acts as a vitamin k inhibitor to block the blood-clotting process and provoke hemorrhage.
Constituents in the plant may undergo chemical transformation by contaminating microorganisms. For example, mold in dried sweet clover (Melilotus officinalis) can result in serious hemorrhagic activity. It contains coumarin, 3,4-dihydrocoumarin, O-coumaric acid, 0-hydroxycoumaric acid, and the O-glycoside of O-coumaric acid (melilotoside). |

Here's what they have come up with: spinach contains a stunning collection of micronutrients, including lutein, zeaxanthin, beta-carotene, plant-derived omega-3 fatty acids (only a very few vegetables contain these fatty acids), the antioxidants glutathione, alpha lipoic acid (spinach is the best food source of this amazingly potent antioxidant), vitamins C and E, polyphenols, coenzyme Qio, thiamine, riboflavin, vitamin B6, folate, vitamin k, and the minerals calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese, and zinc. It also has chlorophyll, which may be a potent anticancer substance. |

The first is that it can worsen the coagulation defect caused by vitamin k deficiency, which is due either to malabsorption of vitamin k from the intestines or to anticoagulant therapy. The second is that, whereas vitamin E certainly lowers blood platelet counts, this may not always be beneficial in certain people, as it may increase the risk of hemorrhagic stroke. Therefore, so long as these are recognized, vitamin E therapy is considered safe by most authorities [53, 138, 187, 226]. |

When vitamin k was first researched in 1929, it was labelled the "Klotting" factor by the Dutch scientist Henrik Dam. Since then, much has been learned about this fascinating molecule. There are three primary variations of vitamin k, all with certain levels of activity in the body.

If you are taking a blood thinner such as Coumadin (warfarin), you must exercise caution both when taking herbs that may further thin your blood and when consuming foods that contain vitamin k. If your blood-clotting time changes too much, you could be in danger of hemorrhage or increased risk of stroke. I have provided a list of herb and food sources and their content of vitamin k, which may potentially counteract blood-thinning medications if used in excess (see the adjoining box). |

It has been shown, however, that some of the anthraquinones in LaPacho have vitamin k activity, and therefore use of the whole herb would compensate for lapachol's effect on vitamin k.37
The approach described above indicates a flaw in the underlying philosophy of the pharmaceutical sciences and the NCI program. Since the initial studies involved the whole plant, the detailed studies should have been undertaken with the whole plant: some of the other quinones have also been shown to have anticancer activities. |

In the second trimester the mother's weight gain more obviously begins.
How much one should gain varies according to constitutional type and general state of health. During pregnancy it is best to enjoy your food. Don't skip meals, diet, or create any other type of nutritional stress. |

Ruberg cites several B vitamins-B^,, riboflavin, and thiamine-as direct contributors to the wound-healing process, and names vitamin k as one that plays a background role.
Because it is essential to the blood-clotting process, he says, vitamin k helps prevent abnormal bleeding that could lead to an abnormal swelling or mass of clotted blood called a hematoma. This is potentially dangerous because it could inhibit the healing process by causing the wound to become infected or burst open. |

We rely on these beneficial microbial "partners" for a number of important functions, including carbohydrate metabolism, amino acid synthesis, vitamin k synthesis, and the processing of various nutrients. Yogurt is a source of beneficial bacteria, and the positive results that are ascribed to introducing this bacteria to our system are not relegated to the digestive tract. While a host of beneficial health effects are linked to yogurt, those that have attracted the most attention include its anticancer properties, its ability to lower cholesterol, and its ability to inhibit unfriendly bacteria. |

CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE AND SPINACH
Spinach is a heart-healthy food. The rich supply of carotenoids and other nutrients helps protect artery walls from damage. The greens highest in carotenoids include spinach, beet and mustard greens, kale, collards, and turnip and dandelion greens. Just a half-cup of cooked spinach supplies 95 percent of my suggested daily intake of beta-carotene and 85 percent of my suggested daily intake of lutein/zeaxanthin. |

Using animal models, Pruesch and Suttie found the anticoagulant activity to occur as a result of potent inhibition of vitamin k quinone and epoxide reductases. This action of lapachol appears similar to that of 4-hydroxy-coumarin anticoagulants - they bind to the oxidized form of the vitamin k reductases.56 Further studies by Preusch on rat liver microsomes showed lapachol inhibits another enzyme linked to blood coagulation.57 Some writers link this anticoagulant activity to the anticancer applications of pau d'arco. |

Broccoli also supplies a significant portion of vitamin k, which is important for blood clotting, and also contributes to bone health.
Broccoli is a great source of the flavonoids, carotenoids, vitamin C, folate, and potassium that help prevent heart disease. It also provides generous amounts of fiber, vitamin E, and vitamin B6, which promote cardiovascular health. Broccoli is one of the few vegetables, along with spinach, that are relatively high in coenzyme QIO (CoQlo), a fat-soluble antioxidant that is a major contributor to the production of energy in our bodies. |

Protamine and vitamin k may be given to reduce bleeding in patients with anticoagulant-induced bleeding.
In patients with ruptured aneurysms, surgical intet-vention is the method of treatment and includes placing a clip across the aneurysm or embolization if the damaged area is difficult to approach. During embolization, a wire-packed catheter is threaded through the blood vessels until it reaches the damaged area; the wires are then detached so that they form coils that attract blood cells to promote clot formation.
Patients with ICH may benefit from a surgical evacuation of the hematoma. |

To determine your need for additional vitamin k, your doctor will need to test your blood clotting. If a potential for abnormal bleeding is found, you need additional vitamin K: 2.5 to 5 milligrams once a week for infants under one year of age and twice a week for older children and adults. Your multivitamin preparation should also contain trace metals and minerals such as zinc, copper, selenium, and iron. If your caloric intake is too low, as gauged by your weight, energy, growth, and development, you may need to drink commercial, prepared liquid products such as Ensure or Sustacal. |
