SOY: High in Estrogen-Replacing Isoflavones Found primarily in soy products, food chemicals called isoflavones rev up your liver's ability to process and excrete excess estrogen, so you end up with more testosterone. Dr. Shippen recommends that you drink one cup of soy milk a day, or use it on your morning cereal. If you don't like soy milk, take a supplement that contains 30 to 50 milligrams of isoflavones, following the dosage recommendations on the label.

Soy synergy as a tool in radiation therapy? Here's a benefit that might surprise most of us: Under certain conditions, it seems that eating soy may make radiation more effective during prostate cancer treatment. According to new research by Gilda Hillman, PhD, an associate professor of radiation oncology with the Kar-manos Cancer Institute in Detroit, soy foods appear to render cancer cells more susceptible to radiation (or more radiosensitive).

These isoflavones are powerful antioxidants and very effective inhibitors of the tyrosine kinase enzyme—a potent tumor promoter. Research suggests that isoflavones may provide protection against heart disease, certain forms of cancer, and osteoporosis. Some evidence also indicates that they may preserve cognitive function. While much press has been given to the potential for soy to ameliorate symptoms of menopause, results have been mixed. If it does provide benefit, it appears to be minimal. þflaxseeds.

Except for soy sauce and soy protein concentrates processed with alcohol, most soy-based foods contain significant amounts of isoflavones, such as genistein. Genistein inhibits growth of prostate cancer cells, helps kill these cells,30 and has other known anticancer actions, according to test tube research findings.31 In preliminary research, men who consumed soy milk more than once per day were reported to have a significantly lower risk of prostate cancer compared with other men.

Vitamin E The North American Menopause Society suggests taking vitamin E along with keeping cool, exercising, not smoking, eating soy isoflavones, and taking black cohosh as inexpensive, probably helpful nonprescription measures to alleviate hot flashes. Quite a few women have heard that vitamin E can be helpful for this symptom, and some have passed the advice along to their friends. • • • Q. I'm 53 and haven't had a period for a year. In a study of postmenopausal women, those women consuming enough soy foods to provide about 200 milligrams of isoflavones demonstrated signs of estrogenic activity when compared to a control group. Specifically, the women consuming the soy foods demonstrated an increase in the number of superficial cells that line the vagina. Presumably, soy food consumption may offset some of the vaginal drying and irritation in postmenopausal women. Estrogens are being widely prescribed for postmenopausal women in an attempt to prevent osteoporosis.
Surprisingly, the treatment that worked best was soy without isoflavones. Clearly, something else was at work. Protease Inhibitors Soybeans, as well as other legumes, nuts, and seeds, contain compounds that inhibit the action of the protein-digesting enzymes (pro- ESTROGEN SENSITIVITY WARNING Women who have estrogen-sensitive breast tumors should restrict their soy intake to no more than 4 servings per week and should avoid soy isoflavone supplements. Studies in test tubes and in animals show that the isoflavone genistein stimulates the growth of estrogen receptor-positive tumors.
The key benefits of soy are its high protein content; essential fatty acids, phytosterols, and lecithin; fiber components; isoflavones; and protease inhibitors. Each of these will be briefly discussed. Please note that these topics are intricately interrelated. Protein Content Although the amino acid profile of soy is not perfect as it is a little low in methionine and tryptophan, soy is still regarded as equal to animal foods in protein quality. In addition, when soy is combined with grains high in methionine, TABLE 13.
Many soy foods now state the level of isoflavones per serving. As you can see from Table 13.3, you do not need to eat huge amounts of soy foods to meet the recommended levels. The greatest benefits of soy consumption may occur before and during adolescence in girls. Studies indicate that preadolescent intake of soy enhances the maturation (differentiation) of breast cells. These more mature cells are less susceptible to carcinogens.
We encourage cancer patients to consume at least one serving of soy (or 50 to 90 milligrams of soy isoflavones) per day unless you have a history of estrogen-positive breast cancer, in which case we encourage you to limit soy consumption to no more than three or four servings per week. Remember that you can use soy milk as the basis of whey protein smoothies. Other Recommendations For people with cancer, especially those undergoing chemotherapy, it's absolutely essential to maintain good hydration. Without adequate water your body cannot detoxify the drugs and remove them from the system.

Genistein and diadzein, two isoflavones found in soy, act as antioxidants and may protect against most forms of cancer, especially prostate cancer, breast cancer, leukemia, glioblastoma multiforme, and bladder cancer. Soy's soluble fiber reduces the risk of many digestive system cancers, such as colon and rectal cancer. The water-absorbing fiber may dilute intestinal carcinogens and usher them out of the body, as well as spur growth of bifidobacteria, the good bacteria that help prevent colon cancer.

Nonetheless, the North American Menopause Society considers vitamin E, like black cohosh and isoflavones, safe enough to be worth a try. Vitamin E has performed poorly in several recent studies of cancer prevention, and women who are at particularly high risk of lung cancer—smokers, for example—should probably avoid taking large doses of vitamin E without other antioxidant nutrients. But healthy women planning to take vitamin E for a year or two to ease hot flashes probably will not notice any unpleasant effects. The best product is a combination of natural tocopherols.

Besides helping to alleviate the many uncomfortable symptoms of estrogen dominance, isoflavones have also been shown to have potent anti-cancer properties. They fight cancer in a variety of ways, including by inducing apoptosis (normal cell death) and inhibiting angiogenesis (new blood vessel growth to cancer cells). In addition to their direct anti-cancer properties, isoflavones are also known to be diuretics, have anti-inflammatory properties, are antioxidants, and can stimulate the immune system and improve cardiovascular health.

What are the benefits of soy isoflavones? Soy isoflavones are a group of phytochemicals only found in soybeans. The isoflavones genistein and daidzein have strong antioxidant benefits that reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer, as well as other diseases. 121. Do soybeans contain other beneficial chemicals? Soybeans contain saponins that are a group of phytonutrients with immunity and disease-fighting potential. They also act to increase immunity, prevent cancer, and fight infections. Soy is also high in protein, vitamin E, lecithin, and omega-3 fatty acids. 122.

Eat moderate amounts of soy products with isoflavones. They may help reduce hot flashes. •Take vitamin E capsules. Up to 400 IU daily should be safe and might help. • If nothing else helps with the hot flashes, try hormone replacement therapy at the lowest effective dose for the shortest possible time. Transdermal estrogen might be worth considering. •An antidepressant such as Paxil (paroxetine), Effexor (venlafaxine), or Prozac (fluoxetine) may calm hot flashes even if you are not depressed. Don't take any of these drugs for longer than you need them; you may need help getting off them.

Although the figure of 1/1,200 might seem "weak," isoflavones are potent endocrine disrupters when consumed in sufficient quantities. How the soy industry came up with the much weaker figures of 10,000, 100,000, and even 500,000 or 1,000,000 times less potent is most instructive. The erroneous figure of 1/10,000 appeared for the first time in a report made by Anthony C. Hugget, Ph.D., a scientist at the Nestle GENISTEIN AND THE HEART The FDA allows products containing soy protein to carry a claim stating that they protect against heart disease.

Nutrition: putting it all together So, putting all of this together on nutrition, let's review for a moment. First, you have to engage in nutritional supplementation if you're going to get outstanding nutrition. It simply isn't possible without turning to nutritional supplements.
