Recent studies have shown that diabetics and people with hypoglycemia are in dire need of chromium in their diets. And, in fact, the rise of adult-onset diabetes and hypoglycemia has been traced by some to the rising popularity of processed foods. When raw cane sugar is refined into white sugar, almost 93 percent of the chromium is removed. And when whole wheat flour is turned into white flour, almost 75 percent of the chromium is removed.
That's why it's important to eat a variety of whole, unrefined foods including molasses, wheat germ and "raw" sugar. |

Others are mainly involved in the structure and function of various enzymes and are required in very small amounts (iron, copper, molybdenum, selenium, zinc, chromium, iodine, magnesium, manganese). Essential minerals of which the exact functions are as yet unknown include nickel, silicon, tin and vanadium. Fluoride is not considered essential but is beneficial in protecting teeth from dental decay.
Calcium is important for healthy bones and teeth and for muscle contraction. Dark green leafy vegetables, brown bread and various pulses are good sources of this mineral. The RDA is 800 mg. |
| Both the RDA and suggested upper safe limit is 15 mg. chromium is important in the metabolism of glucose, amino acids and fats. Plant food sources include nuts, pulses and wholegrain cereals. An upper safe limit is considered to be 200 pg per day for adults. Iodine is used to form thyroid hormones and is found in foods derived from the sea (fish, shellfish and kelp). The RDA is 150 pg. Manganese is mainly derived from plant food sources (green vegetables, cereals, nuts and pulses). It is associated with numerous enzyme systems but is not considered to be an essential mineral. |

Understand that the amount most often given to people with blood sugar problems is in the neighborhood of 600 to 1,000 micrograms; 13 micrograms would do absolutely nothing and is only there so that the manufacturer can say "contains chromium"—a complete rip-off.
Other ingredients that show up in the formulas, especially the ones labeled "lipotropics," are inositol, an essential nutrient and relative of the B family, and choline, another relative of the B family that mobilizes fat. |

And then finally you have the very beneficial effects of chromium and vanadium, trace minerals that are typically deficient in people who suffer from blood sugar imbalances or diabetes.
Put it all together, and you actually have a very effective weight loss product -- surprisingly effective, in fact, given the amount of hype associated with this product. Typically a product that is so heavily hyped is not very effective, or it's made with cheap filler ingredients, but this is not one of those products.

Dosage: Take 1 to 2 tablespoons daily. Carnitine
Description: L-carnitine is an amino acid-like substance that is responsible for transporting fatty acids into the mitochondria (energy factories) of cells to produce energy. L-carnitine is manufactured from the amino acids in the body. The richest food source is red meat. |

Foods that contain chromium include fruits, beers, oysters, liver, egg yolk, potatoes with skin, mushrooms, brewer's yeast, and wines. Not always absorbed—for example, much of the chromium in potatoes never gets incorporated into the body cells. Simple sugars, furthermore, cause the body to excrete large amounts of the mineral. An attempt was made to permit chromium to be listed on a food label as reducing the risk of high blood sugar in adults. The FDA denied the claim because it said the statements submitted as the basis of it were not "authoritative. |

One of the minerals that refined sugar depletes is chromium, which is needed for insulin to do its job effectively!) Since minerals are needed for dozens of metabolic operations, these mineral deficiencies can wind up slowing down your metabolism and creating havoc with your energy level. Finally, sugar reduces HDL, the helpful, "good" cholesterol, adding yet another risk factor for heart disease to its resume.
Is it any wonder people drastically improve their health when they switch to a diet lower in sugar?

In addition, there is some evidence that refined flour and sugar deplete even more chromium from the body.
Haas goes on to describe the subsequent "enrichment" of milled grains as required by federal law in order to prevent diseases due to nutritional deficiencies:
Refining grains and flours creates a number of problems. The major one is the loss of nutrients that occurs from processing them, particularly the loss of most of the B vitamins, vitamin E, and the many minerals that are found naturally in whole grains. |

Excessive consumption of highly refined sugar can deplete valuable reserves of chromium, magnesium, zinc, manganese, and B vitamins. These nutrients are necessary for the metabolism of sugar. Sugar also worsens symptoms of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), especially premenstrually, resulting in symptoms of irritability, poor concentration, sugar cravings, and headaches. Restrict your intake of sugary food throughout the month, and eliminate it during the two weeks before your period.
If you retain water, drastically restrict your consumption of sodium. |

Nearly all municipal water supplies have chlorine or chloramine and fluoride added, and the EPA regulates a number of metals that can come through corroded and leaching pipes, including lead, arsenic, aluminum, antimony, barium, beryllium, cadmium, chromium, copper, iron, manganese, mercury, nickel, selenium, thallium, uranium, and zinc. We are finding out more and more how detrimental these chemicals are to our health. Here are some special concerns worth noting:

Do not go longer than three hours without eating.
A chromium deficiency contributes to blood-sugar problems, so eat plenty of brewer's yeast, wheat germ, whole grains, cheese, soy products, onions, and garlic. Onions and garlic will also help lower blood-sugar levels and protect against heart disease.
Enjoy plenty of berries, plums, and grapes, which contain phytochemicals that protect your vision.
Focus on foods with a low glycemic index and load value. See the Diabetes entry on pages 189-196 for more information.

Foods that are high in chromium, vanadium, and magnesium, such as the root vegetables and whole grains, decrease insulin sensitivity.
Another aspect of insulin and blood sugar control is the issue of oxidative stress. The combination of high blood sugar and imbalanced insulin results in the formation of a glucose-protein combination called glycosylated proteins. These proteins create a cross linkage and damage in the tissues that degrades many tissue functions. They have been called advanced glycosylation end products (AGEs). |

So what I do with these people is, not only do I put them on a diet that has lower amounts of refined sugar but I also get more chromium in the diet, either supplementary or through food, and by re-establishing normal function, the blood sugar goes down, and it goes down not because I gave them a drug; it goes down because I got the body working better.
Mike: Kudos to you, also for avoiding a quick label for individual patients, because isn't it true that many patients, once they are given a label, they adopt that as part of who they are? |

When you're trying to get more chromium, barley is a good choice. One animal study done in England found that barley can help keep blood sugar levels under control. This grain makes great soups and breads and is a nice addition to casseroles.
To help your body retain the most chromium, it's helpful to eat lots of complex carbohydrates, like pasta and bagels, says Dr. Richard Anderson. Eating lots of sugary foods, on the other hand, will cause your body to excrete chromium. |

Minerals and vitamins that are particularly important for healing insulin resistance include selenium, copper, zinc, chromium, magnesium, and vanadium. Proper amounts of B12 are also important for protecting the nervous system against symptoms that occur with insulin resistance. L-arginine (an amino acid) seems to be important for people who have AGEs and free radical aging in general. |
| Over time, this results in a tissue chromium depletion, just as eating cooked foods results in an enzyme depletion.
Enzymes
Enzymes contain the power of life itself. Eating a live-food diet helps maintain the quality and quantity of our enzyme pool, and thus helps promote longevity. Enzymes are living proteins that direct the life force into our basic biochemical and metabolic processes. Enzymes even help repair our DNA and RNA. Enzymes transform and store energy in the body, they make active hormones, and they participate in their own productive cycle. |

In 14 of 16 studies, supplemental chromium significantly reduced blood sugar levels. The mineral works by binding very tightly to insulin, helping the hormone usher blood sugar out of the bloodstream and into cells.
Based on the research to date, the effective dosage of chromium is 200 micrograms a day. To ensure that you're getting that much, I suggest taking a supplement. You can also bolster your intake with foods. Among the best sources of chromium are onions, cabbage, carrots, lettuce, tomatoes, and beans. |

And it was recently suggested that high-dose biotin taken with chromium may be a viable treatment for insulin resistance.
Carnitine
Carnitine, also known (and referred to interchangeably) as L-carnitine, is a very interesting nutrient with a fascinating pedigree. I frequently recommend it for weight loss clients in the dosage of 1 to 2 grams a day. However, you're unlikely to get the full weight loss benefits from it unless you use it in the form and dosages described at the end of this section and in conjunction with a low-carb, reduced-calorie diet. |
