Vitamin E not only improves antioxidant defenses but also seems to help the body in the problem of insulin resistance. Research reveals that a low vitamin E level is an independent and strong predictor for the development of adult-onset diabetes. Individuals who have low levels of vitamin E have a fivefold higher risk of developing diabetes than those with a normal amount of vitamin E. |

In one double-blind crossover experimental design study, 8 female patients were given 200 meg of supplemental chromium (chromic chloride) for 3 months.15 Supplementation improved the hypoglycemic symptoms and raised the minimum serum glucose values 2 to 4 hours following the glucose load. Other improvements included an increase in the insulin receptor number and the binding of insulin to red blood cells. The authors of this study linked the etiology of hypoglycemia to impaired chromium nutrition and/or metabolism. |

The minerals present in green tea include chromium, calcium, magnesium, manganese, iron, copper, zinc, molybdenum, selenium, sodium, phosphorus, strontium, cobalt, nickel, and potassium. Tea, and green tea in particular, is also an impressive source of fluoride—the mineral well known for fighting cavities. The water used in brewing tea as a beverage also contributes to its mineral content. |

Red Clover is a source of many valuable nutrients, including: calcium, chromium, magnesium, niacin, phosphorus, potassium, thiamine, and vitamin C. Red Clover is also one of the richest sources of isoflavones (water-soluble chemicals that act like estrogens and are found in many plants). The isoflavones found in Red Clover have been studied for their effectiveness in treating some forms of cancer. It is thought that the isoflavones prevent the proliferation of cancer cells and that they may even destroy cancer cells. |

The heavy metals chromium and neodymium, which can cause eczema and allergic dermatitis, are banned from cosmetics in China, although there are few other restrictions on personal care products. Procter & Gamble said the metals exist naturally, were not intentionally added to SK-II products and were safe at the low levels found in the products. In October, Chinese authorities announced the trace levels of metals would not harm consumers with normal use of the products, and by December SK-II products were slowly making their way back onto stores shelves. |

Figure 8-2 Some important trace minerals in milligrams.
All minerals come from the soil, whether directly from plants, or indirectly from animals that eat plants. The minerals must exist in the soil in order for them to be absorbed by plants. Also, microbes and rootlet fungi in the soil must be present and healthy to enable the plants to absorb minerals. Some agricultural regions are low in certain minerals. |

Minor Trace Minerals
Iodine, Selenium, Copper, Manganese, Fluoride, chromium, Molybdenum, Lead, and Mercury
Iodine
Iodine is needed to make thyroid hormones. Iodine is a non-metallic trace element that is essential for nutrition. The chemical symbol for iodine is the letter I. Iodine is the name of the element in food and iodide is the name of the ion form found in the body. Only tiny amounts of dietary iodine are needed.
Over geologic time, iodine has washed out of soils and into the ocean. |

Iron, manganese, and chromium use transferrin for transport. Albumin, another plasma protein, is used to transport fluoride, zinc, and cobalt. Excesses of most of these trace minerals are eliminated by the kidneys. However, iron, zinc, copper, and molybdenum are eliminated in the bile.
Perfect health is not possible without the correct amounts of these trace minerals.
CHAPTER 11
Iron
The Blood Builder
Although iron is necessary for our bodies, it can be harmful in large amounts. The chemical symbol for iron is Fe from the Latinferrum, which means iron. |

5-HTP. Technically known as 5-hydroxytryptophan, 5-HTP is the immediate precursor to serotonin. The supplement increases serotonin levels, whereas antidepressant drugs try to maintain higher levels (which may be difficult if there is not much serotonin to work with). The 5-HTP molecule is built around tryptophan, an amino acid found in meats, fowl, and fish. |

These include nickel, which is used in gold crowns, braces and children's crowns. Also chromium is extremely carcinogenic. All metals corrode, (including gold, silver and platinum) and the body absorbs it. Women with breast cancer have accumulated large amounts of dissolved metals in their breasts. When the mouth is cleared of all metals, they will also leave the breasts and the metal-caused cysts will shrink and disappear by themselves. Yeast infections often improve quickly after removal of metal fillings. |

A 2006 study also "showed that transgenic soybean oil in Beijing was presumably polluted with zinc, chromium, and lead," and also with arsenic and titanium.57 The levels were not above the Chinese allowable limits and the study did not present data from non-GM soy oil controls. Thus, we can only conclude that heavy metals can accumulate in GM soy oil. As the paper states, little attention has been given to "whether the accumulation pattern and levels of heavy metals could change after the insertion of foreign genes. |

Along with chromium is vanadium. This is another ingredient that increases the transportation of blood sugar from your bloodstream to your body's cells. Vanadium, in many ways, mimics insulin, thus it helps accomplish the function of insulin without requiring extra effort on the part of your pancreas. These two ingredients together, chromium and vanadium, are a smart pair in controlling blood sugar. This, in turn, suppresses blood sugar spikes and the formation of excess body fat following meals, especially meals containing refined carbohydrates. |
| Next, we have two ingredients that are present in only small amounts -- these are chromium and vanadium, and these I think are another excellent choice for the Trim Spa recipe. chromium, in particular, has been shown to greatly enhance insulin sensitivity (which is a good thing). You may recall that a lot of diabetics suffer from insulin resistance, meaning that even though their body is producing insulin, their cells aren't paying attention to it, and they're not accepting blood sugar from the bloodstream, meaning that the blood sugar levels stay elevated, and that's dangerous for diabetics. |

Often, elements such as zinc, selenium, molybdenum, chromium, vanadium, and so on may be required by enzymes to function properly. These trace elements must be obtained in our diets, because our bodies can't manufacture them. If our diet is deficient in these vitamins and minerals, the critical enzymes won't perform their catalyst function properly.
If your diet is deficient in chromium, for example, you may become resistant to insulin, since chromium is a necessary cofactor for enzymes that help insulin to function. |

In addition to chromium, which improves glucose tolerance, decreases fasting blood sugar, and has been shown to help insulin resistance in people with diabetes, two other supplements may be helpful. Though not normally thought of as the first nutrient you'd take for PCOS, biotin in high doses (8 to 16 mg) should be considered because it has the potential to be of great help in normalizing and lowering blood sugar.
And then there's fenugreek, an herb that also has a beneficial effect on blood sugar. It reduces fasting blood glucose (blood sugar) when used at the dosage of 1. |

| This makes apple cider vinegar a powerful natural weapon, along with cinnamon and chromium, in the fight to control blood sugar and help get carbohydrate metabolism on track.
Respected nutritional researcher Jeff Volek, Ph.D., R.D., suggests a salad with vinegar at the beginning of every meal for its potential in managing blood sugar. Make it apple cider vinegar and get not only the sugar-busting benefits, but the all the other benefits that come with this great natural cure as well.
Remember to get apple cider vinegar that is traditionally made. |

Cabbage—The Romans' Cancer Cure
Cabbage was revered in ancient Rome as a cancer cure. Today, we know its cancer-curing effects are from its numerous anti-cancer and antioxidant compounds. Cabbage speeds up estrogen metabolism, which is thought to help block breast cancer and suppress growth of polyps, a prelude to colon cancer. |

Broccoli also contains folic acid, calcium, and chromium. Broccoli is rich in many plant compounds such as indoles and isothiocynates, which have been shown to have cancer-fighting properties. Broccoli sprouts are one of the most concentrated sources of an antioxidant called sulforaphane glucosinolate. Scientists discovered that a handful of three-day-old broccoli sprouts contained as much as twenty to fifty times as much sulforaphane glucosinolate as 114 pounds of regular broccoli! |

One of these investigators has prescribed 3000 to 4000 meg of chromium as nicotinate, given twice daily, to adult-onset diabetic patients over months and years, resulting in significant reductions of glucose and lipid levels without any increases in blood urea nitrogen, liver enzymes, or other laboratory abnormalities. Note that supplemental doses of chromium would never come close to 1050 mg per day.

Cinnamon. Consuming small amounts of cinnamon, in foods or supplements, can greatly improve blood sugar levels. In one study, researchers gave cinnamon to 60 overweight people with type 2 diabetes. The dosages were 1, 3, or 6 grams daily for 40 days. People taking cinnamon had decreases in blood sugar ranging from 18 to 29 percent. |
| Many were able to reduce or eliminate their prescription antidepression medications. chromium may increase brain levels of tryptophan and serotonin.
Dosage: Take 400 to 1,000 meg daily. Divide the dosage, so that you take half the amount twice a day.
Magnesium
Principal use: To reduce nervousness, anxiety, jittery feelings, agitation, twitchiness, and muscle spasms. It may have some benefits in posttraumatic depression and anxiety. |
