Check for selenium and chromium. Not all multivitamin/mineral supplements contain selenium and chromium. Make sure that yours does. Both minerals may play important roles in disease prevention. One long-term study found that large doses of selenium may significantly reduce the risk of lung, colon, breast, prostate, and esophageal cancers. Other studies suggest that people who are deficient in chromium may have an increased risk of developing diabetes.
Consider single supplements. Multivitamin/mineral supplements have breadth, but they may not have the depth you need. |

The red lights were reflecting eerily off the mirrored surface of a massive, foot-thick chromium steel column of electromagnetic lenses that rose to the ceiling in the center of the room. Spreading out on either side at the base of the column was a large control console. The console resembled the instrument panels of a Boeing 747, filled with switches, illuminated gauges and multicolored indicator lamps. Large tentacle-like arrays of thick power cords, water hoses and vacuum lines radiated from the base of the microscope like tap roots at the base of an old oak tree. |

Like the other supplements, chromium is better as an addition to rather than a substitute for exercise, diet, and medication to control blood sugar. Careful blood sugar monitoring and medical supervision are advised.
FENUGREEK
Fenugreek is a seed used to spice Indian food. It has also been used in traditional medicine to treat symptoms that indicate diabetes. Studies done in humans suggest that it can be used in type 1 as well as type 2 diabetes in addition to prescribed medication. The powdered seed lowered blood sugar and HbAlc.249

Q There have been numerous reports on the benefits of DL-phenylalanine (DLPA) in treating anxiety and depression. DLPA is a supplement consisting of both D-phenyl-alanine and L-phenylalanine, and is much more potent than either of these amino acids taken alone. This should be used under the supervision of a nutritionally oriented physician.
Q Selenium has been shown to elevate mood and decrease anxiety. |

SlLYMARIN
This antioxidant extract of milk thistle (Silybum marianum), silymarin is widely used to enhance the function of the liver, which works in tandem with the pancreas to regulate glucose levels. In a twelve-month clinical study, 600 mg daily of silymarin reduced glucose in diabetic patients by 9.5 to 15 percent. The patients also benefited from lower levels of sugar in the urine, less glycated hemoglobin, and lower insulin requirements. |
| In addition, research suggests that some nutritional supplements, such as chromium picolinate and coenzyme Q10, may decrease cell damage in ways similar to calorie-restricted diets.
How Vitamins Reduced Barbara's Symptoms of Sickle-Cell Anemia
Barbara, age twenty-eight, was born with sickle-cell anemia, in which a genetic mutation interferes with the normal function of red blood cells and leads to their rapid breakdown. Her distant African ancestors benefited from this particular mutation, which conferred a measure of protection against the parasite causing malaria. |
| So I started taking supplements of these minerals, including chromium, magnesium, and zinc. I also increased my intake of alpha-lipoic acid, a vitamin-like nutrient involved in regulating blood sugar and insulin levels. But supplements were not the entire solution. Two years later a nutritionist coached me on eating more wholesome foods as a way to lose weight and control my blood sugar. |

| Barley (Hordeum disticum), as well as slowing sugar absorption, has a high chromium content which has been shown to lower blood sugars in rats.13 The sulphonamide-containing antibiotics were found by serendipity to have a hypoglycemic effect when they were first used as antibiotics. Sulphonylurea hypoglycaemic drugs were subsequently developed. Sulphur-containing herbs such as garlic (Allium sativum) and onion (Allium cepa) have been found to have some effect in stimulating insulin production.14 Garlic has been traditionally used in Arabic medicine to treat diabetes. |

Q During a low blood sugar reaction, eat something that combines fiber with a protein food, such as bran or rice crackers with raw cheese or almond butter.
Q Instead of eating applesauce, have a whole apple, which has more fiber. The fiber in the apple will inhibit fluctuations in blood sugar. Fiber alone (found in popcorn, oat bran, rice bran, crackers, ground flaxseed, and psyllium husks) will slow down a hypoglycemic reaction. Take fiber half an hour before meals. |

Especially important are the B vitamins and the minerals magnesium, chromium, zinc, and manganese. The use of multiple vitamin and mineral supplements is associated with at least a 30 percent reduction of diabetes risk in men and a 16 percent reduction in risk for women; however, the supplements used in these studies are in our opinion far from ideal.19 In Appendix H on pages 325-327 we provide our recommendations for selecting a high-quality formula, while a more in-depth discussion of the role of individual nutrients helpful in fighting diabetes is provided in Chapter 7. |

| Other inhalant pollution
Inhalant exposure to diesel exhaust, pitch and tar, dioxin, arsenic, chromium, cadmium, and nickel compounds may also increase the risk of lung cancer.26 Exposure to asbestos is associated with an increased risk of lung cancer.
Radon exposure has been reported to contribute to the risk of lung cancer in rhe general population.27 Radon, a natural radioactive substance, can leak into basements from the surrounding soil. Radon exposure can also occur from the water system of houses, particularly when people take showers. |
| Nutritional supplements that may be helpful
Research has shown that supplementing with chromium (page 493) (200 meg per day)13 or magnesium (page 551) (340 mg per day)14 can prevent blood sugar levels from falling excessively in people with hypoglycemia. Niacinamide (page 598) (vitamin B3) has also been found to be helpful for hypoglycemic people.15 Other nutrients, including vitamin C (page 604), vitamin E (page 609), zinc (page 614), copper (page 499), manganese (page 553), and vitamin I$6 (page 600), may help control blood sugar levels in diabetics (page 152). |
| One group of researchers has reported significant reductions in body fat in double-blind trials using 200 to 400 meg per day of chromium for six to twelve weeks in middle-aged adults,274,275 but the methods used in these studies have been criticized.276
Chondroitin sulfate
Chondroitin sulfate (page 492), 800 to 1,200 mg per day, is effective for reducing joint pain caused by osteoarthritis.277, 278 Other uses of chondroitin sulfate for sports and fitness, including prevention of joint pain or treatment of sports injuries, have not been studied. |
| Optimally, true brewer's yeast contains up to 60 meg of chromium per tablespoon, and a reasonable intake is 2 tablespoons per day.
High amounts (several grams per day) of niacin, a form of vitamin B3 (page 598), lower cholesterol, an effect recognized in the approval of niacin as a prescription medication for high cholesterol.194 The other common form of vitamin B3—niacinamide—does not affect cholesterol levels. Some niacin preparations have raised HDL cholesterol better than certain prescription drugs. |
