He started with disogenin, a phytoestrogen produced by the yam, and from that base, he synthesized the first marketable contraceptive pill in 1951. Yams aren't the only source of phytoestrogens in the human diet. Soy is rich in a phytoestrogen called genistein. It's worth noting that today many processed foods, including commercial baby formulas, use soy because it's an inexpensive source of nutrition.

In the fruit world, both cherries and pomegranate seeds contain measurable amounts of phytoestrogen, but far less than the amounts detected in legumes. One researcher measured 1.7 milligrams of the phytoestrogen estrone in 3 ounces of pomegranate seeds. Lignans, which are found in whole-grain products and flaxseed oil, are also phytoestrogens. Estrogen and phytoestrogen both bind to the cell on estrogen receptors, which are located on the outside of the estrogen-sensitive cell. Phytoestrogens can work in two ways, depending upon the estrogen status of the woman.

An excellent source of protein without the side effects of meat, tofu contains a compound, phytoestrogen, which may provide heart-protective properties to women. In addition, phytoestrogen seems to modestly lower cholesterol and promote healthy blood vessels. All of which is not to say that people who live a long time don't eat meat: Festive meals in Sardinia include lots of meat. Okinawans slaughter pigs during lunar New Year festivals. And Nicoyans raise family pigs as well. But meat is typically eaten only a few times a month. And most warnings concern red meat or processed meat like bacon.

Soy sauce contains very little phytoestrogen content, and many processed foods made from soybean concentrates have insignificant levels of phytoestrogens. Supplements containing isoflavones extracted from soy are commercially available, and flaxseed (as opposed to flaxseed oil) is also a good source of phytoestrogens. Lifestyle changes that may be helpful Sedentary women are more likely to have moderate or severe hot flashes compared with women who exer-cise.8,9 In one trial, menopausal symptoms were reduced immediately after aerobic exercise.

SOY: A LITTLE GOES A LONG WAY Soybeans contain many anticarcinogenic compounds, including the phytoestrogen genistein. Phytoestrogens are plant chemicals that mimic the effects of natural estrogen—and help prevent it from causing cancerous changes in cells in both women and men. Just one daily serving of soy (one cup of soy milk, one-half cup of tofu, one-half cup of soybeans) may reduce the risk for some breast and prostate cancers. What most people don't know: Soy foods, such as soybeans, tofu and tempeh, are also good sources of cancer-fighting omega-3s.

Sesame seeds contain a special phytoestrogen called sesamin that may play a role in helping vitamin E curb the production of inflammation-causing eicosanoids. When the body has too many omega-6 fatty acids and not enough omega-3s, it tends to produce eicosanoids, which in turn affect immune function. So look for opportunities to add sesame seeds to your meals, especially when you are eating something high in vitamin E, such as sunflower seeds, almonds, peanut butter, canola oil, Swiss chard, or broccoli. Vitamin C boosts the effectiveness of phytoestrogens.

Glycyrrhiza glabra and Medicago sativa) commonly used in the treatment of OA contain compounds with phytoestrogen activity capable of binding to estrogen receptors and acting as estrogen antagonists. However, although phytoestrogen-containing herbs may be of value in osteoarthritis, perhaps the best way to increase the intake of phytoestrogens is to increase the intake of food sources of phytoestrogens. Good food sources of phytoestrogens include soy, fennel, celery, parsley, nuts, whole grains, and apples.

Soy is rich in a phytoestrogen called genistein. It's worth noting that today many processed foods, including commercial baby formulas, use soy because it's an inexpensive source of nutrition. There's a growing concern among a small number of scientists that we don't have a handle on the potential long-term effects of what seems to be an ever-greater level of phytoestrogens and soy in our diet. plants are good at birth control—but they're great at poison. Most of the toxins they produce aren't directed at humans, of course; they don't really have to worry about us too much.

Sixty grams of soy protein containing 45 mg of isoflavones (a phytoestrogen compound found in high amounts in soy; see Table 1.1) was given daily for one month in a study lasting nine months. A significant increase in the length of the follicular phase (first half of the menstrual cycle) by an average of 2.5 days and/or delayed menstruation was observed in the six women who consumed the soy protein. Again, as with Table 1.
There are many herbs that contain phytoestrogen compounds and have a role in amenorrhea. They support the reproductive cycle and relieve menopausal symptoms in women who are appropriately menopausal (see Chapter 12) as well as women who are amenorrheic and prematurely menopausal. These herbs include: • Alfalfa (Medicago sativd) • Dong quai (Angelica sinensis) • Flaxseed (Linum usitatissimum) • Ginseng (Panax ginseng) • Hops (Humulus lupulus) • Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) • Red clover (Trifolium pratense) Progesterone Precursors.

Antitumor Effects: Theoretically, hops may inhibit tumor cell growth via the estrogenic effect of its phytoestrogen components. There is currently minimal clinical data to support this role but initial reports are suggestive (Milligan et al, 1999; Zavaet al, 1998). In an in vitro assessment of six flavonoids found in hops, xanthohumol was found to be the most effective antiproliferative agent in human breast, colon, and ovarian cancer cells.

Much of the attention on licorice root has centered on its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral, and expectorant (promotion of the elimination of mucus from the lungs or bronchi) properties, but for menopausal symptom relief we are more interested in the estrogenic activity of some of its phytoestrogen components, including beta-sitosterol, formononetin, coumarin, and others, in particular beta-sitosterol, which is V400th as active as estradiol.
There are two basic categories of creams: • Those that contain wild yam and no progesterone • Those that contain diosgenin extract (a phytoestrogen compound) from wild yam that is converted into natural progesterone in a laboratory The problem is that the creams that contain only wild yam are not effective as a progesterone agent because the body cannot convert the diosgenin to progesterone. The confusion is further exacerbated by the varied strengths of the creams. The wild yam creams with bio-identical progesterone added come in a wide range of dosages.
Another study of ovariectomized rats also reported a positive effect of the soy phytoestrogen genistein in maintaining bone.46 These authors also reported that genistein suppresses the bone resorption cells (osteoclasts) both in the test tube and in vivo. Several human studies have provided further insight into the possible role of soy in bone health.

Isoflavones contribute significantly to our dietary phytoestrogen intake. Isoflavones are found in legumes and are highest in soybeans. These isoflavones are associated with the protein part of the soybeans and are not found in soy oils or soy lecithin. One potential dietary influence for a cholesterol-lowering strategy is to consume more soy protein. This is perhaps my favorite recommendation to women because soy also offers many other potential benefits, including mild reduction of menopausal symptoms and potentially reduction in the risk of breast cancer and uterine cancer.

Hops has been used historically for reproductive conditions including premature ejaculation, as an anaphrodisiac in men, and for dysmenorrhea in women, but clinical evidence to support its use as a phytoestrogen is limited. Externally, an infusion or poultice of hops can be used to treat bruises, boils, and painful swellings. It is often combined with chamomile or poppy for this purpose. Antibacterial Effects: Lupulone and humulone exhibit gram-positive and gram-negative antibacterial properties.

Some of the pharmacological activities demonstrated include phytoestrogen activity, analgesic activity, cardiovascular effects, smooth muscle relaxing effects, antiallergy and immunomodulating activity, and antibacterial activity. Phytoestrogen effects Plant estrogenic substances, or phytoestrogens, are components of many medicinal herbs historically used to treat conditions now treated with synthetic estrogens. Chinese and Japanese angelicas contain highly active phytoestrogens, although these compounds are much lower in activity than animal estrogens (1:400 as active).
