Kevin was a fifty-five-year-old man with a history of heart conditions. He had already experienced his first heart attack and wanted to make sure that he did not have another one. At six feet two inches and 172 pounds, Kevin was underweight, and he was not in good health. When Kevin came to see me, his cholesterol was at 234. |

VITAMIN B6 DEFICIENCY AND DEPRESSION
In the conversion of tryptophane to serotonin, vitamin b6 is an essential co-factor, and therefore a B6 deficiency will adversely affect the serotonin metabolism. B6 imbalances are common in depressed women suffering from PMS or menopause. The nutrient can also be inactivated by hormones present in birth control or estrogen replacement medication. Compensate for B6 shortages by stocking up on the following smart foods:

HYPERTENSION
Hypertension is the prime contributor to coronary heart disease and stroke, yet in itself it is often nothing more than irritable vascular syndrome. When hypertension occurs, your arteries begin to harden and your blood pressure rises. Fifteen to 20 percent of Americans have hypertension. Left untreated, not only can it damage your heart, but it can also cause harm to your kidneys, lungs, eyes, nervous system, and brain. |

In addition, in some (but not all) animal studies, vitamin b6 deficient rats that were fed a high-protein (70 percent protein) diet developed fatty liver. A low intake of B6 can impair glucose tolerance. And in a low-carbohydrate diet, the body makes needed glucose from noncarbohydrate sources (like protein), a process called gluconeogenesis (see chapter 2 for a full explanation of this process). During gluconeogenesis, B6 levels are depleted from muscle, another reason for supplementing with B6 while on a low-carb diet. |

Melatonin and GABA also can contribute to quality sleep. vitamin b6, pantothenic acid, and other B vitamins also increase dream recall and promote satisfying sleep. Inositol and vitamin C can be helpful too.
If drugs are necessary, anti-anxiety drugs, antidepressants, or anticonvulsants—such as Xanax, Klonopin, Neurontin, Desyrel, or Doxepin—and/or antihistamines are best. Occasionally, major tranquilizers such as Mellaril are necessary. However, the problem with using prescription drugs as sleep aids is that they are addictive. |

Taking one gram (1,000 milligrams) of vitamin C, 50 to 100 micrograms of vitamin b6 and 500 to 1,000 micrograms of vitamin B12 can help both asthma and seasonal allergies. Additionally, drinking three to four cups of black tea will help open your airways, because black tea naturally contains theophylline, which is also a component in many asthma medications.
Adding and subtracting from your diet is key to asthma prevention and treatment, but upper-body massage and chiropractic care can also provide respite from asthma symptoms. |

This molecular bridging utilizes an enzyme, lysyl oxidase, that requires vitamin b6 for it activity. A B(, (pyridoxine) deficiency leads to a weakening in the blood vessels so that increased stress at arterial branching points and sharp curves leads to small tears in the wall of the vessel. This increases the likelihood of accumulation of oxidized LDL cholesterol, and explains why atherosclerosis is more severe at places of high-flow stress. It also explains why people with hypertension have higher rates of atherosclerosis.

When older people were fed diets deficient in vitamin b6, their immunity was lowered substantially," Dr. Blumberg says. "When their intake was then increased one step at a time, immunity gradually returned to normal—but only after intake of more than 1.6 milligrams was provided."
You can get the RDA of 2 milligtams of vitamin b6 by eating two latge bananas. Other good dietary sources are chicken, fish, liver, rice, avocados, walnuts, wheat germ and sunflower seeds. vitamin b6 can be toxic in very large doses (1,000 to 2,000 milligrams per day), Dr. Blumberg says.

It has also been determined that people with this dementing disorder have very low levels of vitamin B(, (pyridoxine), folate, and vitamin B12 (methylcobalamin) in their tissues as well. vitamin b6 plays a major role in protecting the brain against excitotoxicity. Methylcobalamin can directly block excitotoxicity, and folate plays a critical role in the production of acetylcholine, brain phospholipids, and DNA. |

In 1949 two researchers named Rinehart and Greenberg found they could reproduce atherosclerosis in monkeys simply by maintaining them on a diet deficient in vitamin b6 for two-and-a-half years. Unfortunately, since scientists at that time were unable to explain why this could result in atherosclerosis, they did what leading scientists have always done: they simply ignored it. Besides, cholesterol had just arrived on the scene and seemed to offer a far more direct connection.

| When asked for scientific documentation, you'll usually receive stories of toxicity related to megadoses of vitamin A (especially in children), vitamin D excess (which is difficult to document except in serious extremes), liver failure with time-release niacin, or reports on the neurotoxicity of large doses of vitamin b6. While these toxicities do exist, they are quite rare and never occur when nutritional supplementation is designed by competent physicians versed in their appropriate use. |
| One such study compared the blood levels of vitamin b6, folate, and B12 in groups of healthy and hospitalized elderly, matched for all the variables. At the same time, researchers also drew metabolic studies that more accurately determined if the vitamins were actually in the tissues doing their job. What they found was shocking.
Using only blood levels, it appeared that only 8-9 percent of the healthy elderly, and 19 percent of the hospitalized, had low vitamin levels for one or more of the vitamins. |
| Three vitamins act as coenzymes in the synthesis of SAMe: vitamin b6, folic acid and vitamin B12. Deficiencies in one or more of these vitamins can severely disrupt the metabolic formation of SAMe. Recent studies have found very low levels of SAMe in Alzheimer's patients, which is not surprising given that numerous studies have shown that these same three vitamins are also low in this disease as well. Remember from an earlier discussion that B12 deficiencies were found in 83 percent of hospitalized, and 68 percent of healthy, elderly. |

It's interesting to note that the B6 in a i-ounce serving of pistachios is equal to the B6 in a typical 3-ounce serving of chicken or pork. Like all nuts, pistachios are particularly rich in the phytonutrients that are associated with reducing cholesterol and protecting from a variety of cancers.

Six weeks later came the good news: Sandy's homocysteine level had dropped to 11 and her Lp(a) level was down to 65.
Sandy was thrilled to hear the news. For the first time she felt as though she'd thrown off the shackles of her unfortunate family history and had regained some control over her health. Eight weeks later her homocysteine level was in the normal range, at just under 8. |

2. Stimulant and drug dependence
Although many people know that drinking and eating stimulants is not good for their health, it is not assumed that it can make them crazy. This is far from the truth. Excessive intake of stimulants (tea, coffee, alcohol, sugar, cola, caffeine pills, cigarettes) can bring on symptoms of mental illness. The symptoms are very similar to those for dysglycemia, coupled with cravings for any of these substances. |
