B complex has been a popular part of nutritional treatment for the emotional symptoms of PMS for many years. vitamin b6 in particular has been effective for this purpose and is probably the most effective principle in the B complex for depression. vitamin b6 (also called pyridoxine) is key to the synthesis of all major neurotransmitters. Natural medicine author, researcher, and professor of botanical medicine (at Bastyr University) Michael T. Murray, N.D., thinks that there may be millions of people on Prozac who merely have a B6 deficiency.

Other useful hemorrhoid fighters are: topically applied calendula ointment, and, taken internally, vitamin E, butcher's broom tea, vitamin C, quercetin, bromelain, and grape seed extract. vitamin b6 is a very important, generally underutilized nutrient; take about 25 to 50 mg a day. Use vitamin K at 5 mg, and cat's claw. Also useful are warm sitz baths, homeopathy, and acupuncture. Exercise, especially good resistance workouts about four days a week, can help.

Two tablespoons, at only 52 calories, have 4 grams of protein, 2 grams of fiber, 41 micrograms of folate, a third of the RDA (recommended daily allowance) of vitamin E, along with high levels of thiamine, manganese, selenium, vitamin b6, and potassium together with reasonable levels of iron and zinc. Wheat germ, like flaxseed, is also one of the few sources of plant-derived omega-3 fatty acids. Just 2 tablespoons—the serving size of wheat germ—of Kretschmer toasted wheat germ have 100 milligrams of beneficial omega-3 fatty acids.

One study revealed that less-than-optimal levels of vitamin b6, vitamin Bi2, and folic acid can also lead to a deficiency of S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe). SAMe deficiency can cause depression, dementia, or demyelinating myelopathy (a degeneration of the nerves).11 In fact, we are finding out that we just can't function properly without a wide array of vitamins and minerals that act as necessary cofactors in all the metabolic processes in the body. And unfortunately the typical American diet does not provide us with enough essential vitamins.

It also provides generous amounts of fiber, vitamin E, and vitamin b6, which promote cardiovascular health. Broccoli is one of the few vegetables, along with spinach, that are relatively high in coenzyme QIO (CoQlo), a fat-soluble antioxidant that is a major contributor to the production of energy in our bodies. At least in people with diagnosed heart disease, CoQio may play a cardioprotective role. About 25 percent of the population inherit an aversion to the bitter taste of cruciferous vegetables. If this describes you, add salt, since that makes them taste sweeter.

Excessive homocysteine blocks the natural breakdown of fibrinogen by inhibiting the production of tissue plasminogen activator, but folic acid, trimethylglycine (TMG), vitamin Bi2, and vitamin b6 can help by reducing elevated homocysteine levels. Also, the ever-helpful vitamin C, in large doses, has been shown to break down excess fibrinogen. In one study, heart disease patients were given either 1,000 or 2,000 mg a day of vitamin C to measure the fibrinogen breakdown effect. At 1,000 mg a day, there was no detectable change in fibrinogen or cholesterol.
Many people find that the daily intake of 500 mg of TMG, 800 meg of folic acid, 200 meg of vitamin B12, 250 mg of choline, 250 mg of inositol, 30 mg of zinc, and 100 mg of vitamin b6 will keep homocysteine levels in a safe range. The only way to really know is to have your blood tested to make sure your homocysteine levels are under 7. Controlling C-Reactive Protein One of the best-documented ways of determining who will have a stroke is to measure levels of C-reactive protein in the blood. One study shows that elevated C-reactive protein doubles or triples the risk of stroke.

Take a vitamin b6 supplement. Some studies show that vitamin b6 helps keep kidney stones from recurring. I'd suggest taking 25 milligrams of the vitamin a day, as a preventive. Try the anti-stone herbs. In my Garden of Youth, I grow the following herbs, all of which help prevent and treat stones: corn silk, dandelion, quackgrass, and stoneroot. Stone-Stopping Sipper If you don't have any of the herbs mentioned below, you can substitute horsetail, stinging nettle, and parsley. These also have a reputation for preventing kidney stone formation.

B6, and 50 meg of vitamin B12) have been effective in lowering homocysteine levels. Some individuals (about 2% of the population) have a genetic defect in their ability to metabolize homocysteine. These people are at high risk of developing cardiovascular disease (indeed, more than one-quarter of patients with premature atherosclerosis have this genetic defect).16 Fortunately, even inherited elevations of homocysteine can usually be corrected by supplementing with larger doses of folic acid (such as 5 mg per day) and/or vitamin B(, (such as 50 to 100 mg per day).

Folic acid and vitamin B]2 help convert homocysteine back to methionine, and vitamin b6 helps convert to cystathionine, another necessary compound in the reactions. However, when a person has low levels of one or more of these vitamins, homocysteine cannot be converted, and blood levels rise. This imbalance usually occurs for one of several reasons: too much protein, too few B vitamins, or a common genetic defect that partially interferes with how the body uses folic acid. Without sufficient B vitamins, homocysteine injures blood vessel walls, particularly those in the heart and brain.
B vitamins (chiefly folic acid and vitamin b6) disrupts a fundamental biochemical process known as methylation. As a consequence, blood levels of homocysteine increase, damaging blood vessel walls. The body's response, meant to heal the damage, actually leads to the deposition of cholesterol and other substances. The other theory, which dates back in part to clinical work by Evan Shute, M.D., in the 1940s and research by Denham Harman, M.D., in the 1950s, argues that oxidized LDL cholesterol is swallowed by white blood cells, which become lodged in the matrix of cells in artery walls.
One study, published in the November 29, 2001, New England Journal of Medicine, found that modest supplements of folic acid, vitamin b6, and vitamin B12 significantly lowered homocysteine levels and clearly reversed coronary artery disease in heart patients. Reducing homocysteine levels eliminates a major cause of blood vessel inflammation. As discussed in chapter 9, vitamin E supplements lower CRP levels and, several clinical trials have found, reduce the risk of heart disease and heart attack.

For example, researchers from the Kaiser Pernanente Medical Center in Hayward, California had success with a vitamin b6 dosage of 200 milligrams per day administered over a period of three months. How does it work? Carpal tunnel syndrome causes a reduction in the rate at which nerve impulses travel, and vitamin b6 therapy seems to speed up the nerve impulses to the hand, reducing the pressure and pain. If your daily work puts you at risk of developing CTS, take 50 to 100 milligrams of B6 daily.

Maintain electrolyte balance if vomiting is severe. Vitamin B6: 100 mg to 300mg/day Constipation High levels of progesterone relax the intestinal muscles, and thus reduce their ability to propel the contents of the bowel toward the rectum and out of the body. In addition, as pregnancy progresses, the weight of the baby and placenta increases, and the pressure they exert on the lower bowel aggravates the tendency to constipation. When the enlarged uterus impedes circulation to the bowel, the action of the intestinal muscles is also restricted.

A number of "health-food" advocates recommend megadoses of vitamin b6 to treat a variety of illnesses, from premenstrual syndrome to asthma to kidney stones. Although the daily requirement of B6 is estimated to be 2 to 4 milligrams, some people take 4 to 6 grams a day, believing that such self-medication will prevent or relieve these disorders. Not only is scientific proof lacking that these doses are helpful, but vitamin b6 can cause a severe neuropathy and impair the senses of touch, pain, and temperature.
