The frequent ingestion of the steroids found in BCPs have been shown to depress levels of riboflavin, pyridoxine, vitamin b12, ascorbic acid, and zinc.9 Hormones can also affect breast tenderness, increase risk of blood clots, and induce an array of side effects in some women, and they are metabolized in the liver. Providing selective nutritional support, supporting breast health, and enhancing hormonal metabolism and detoxification pathways may optimize the experience of using hormonal contraception. Riboflavin deficiency may occur with long periods of oral contraceptive (OC) use.
The second issue is that high doses of folic acid can mask a vitamin b12 anemia. To avoid this, take either a multiple vitamin-mineral, B-complex, or B12 supplement along with the daily folic acid. Folic Acid 2.5-10 mg per day 800-2,400 meg per day for prevention (see treatment plans) B Vitamins. B vitamins, specifically riboflavin, thiamine, and B12, have an inverse correlation with risk for CIN, leading some researchers to promote the protective role they may play in cervical cancer, reducing the risk by as much as 50 to 90 percent for the upper limits of intake.
Folate, vitamin b12, and vitamin Bg are inversely related to homocysteine levels, and anyone with a nutritional deficiency that leads to low concentrations of either one or more of these nutrients is at increased risk for elevated homocysteine levels. Testing for homocysteine levels is available through commonly available simple blood tests. The first meta-analysis of the Homocysteine Lowering Trialists' Collaboration concluded that folic acid supplementation lowered homocysteine levels by about 25 percent.

Recently, it was discovered that low brain levels of the vitamin b12 can cause severe intellectual deterioration.284 We know that B12 deficiency is more common in the elderly than many physicians realize. Unfortunately, some doctors are unaware that the blood levels of vitamin b12 can be within the normal range in the presence of dangerously low brain levels of the vitamin (even without anemia). This form of dementia can often be reversed by injections of vitamin b12. But replacement of vitamin b12 works only if the treatment begins early in the course of the disorder.

Compared with baseline, levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, homocysteine, triglycerides, folic acid, and vitamin b12 did not alter significantly with either Soy or placebo groups. No serious adverse effects were recorded. The findings suggest that soy protein supplements may offer an uncomplicated method for lowering cardiovascular disease risk (Hoie, 2005). An earlier, randomized, crossover study found that plasma and urinary isoflavone levels markedly increased with regular consumption of whole Soybean extracts in adults (23 men and 10 post-menopausal women).

Journal National Cancer Institute 95: 373-80, 2003] Folic acid and vitamin b12 appear to have a more marked protective effect against breast cancer among postmenopausal women. [Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers Prevention 15: 443-48, 2006] Among the first anti-cancer drugs were those that interfere with folic acid. The problem is, in the long term, healthy cells that are deprived of folic acid cannot repair their DNA. The whole idea of using folic acid-depleting drugs, called anti-folates, to treat cancer, should be called into question.

Bee pollen is one of the few vegetable sources of vitamin b12 (Scheer 1992). A tablespoonful of bee pollen contains about 45 calories and is 15% lecithin (which is required for normal fat metabolism) by weight (Kamen 1991). Names: bee bread, buckwheat pollen, maize pollen, pollen, rape pollen, songhuuafen actions and pharmacology EFFECTS Bee pollen is claimed to have anti-inflammatory, antineoplastic, desensitizing, immune-stimulating, rejuvenating, and adaptogenic properties.
Calcium functions as a regulator in the release and storage of neurotransmitters and hormones, in the uptake and binding of amino acids, and in vitamin b12 absorption and gastrin secretion. Calcium is required to maintain the function of the nervous, muscular, and skeletal systems and cell membrane and capillary permeability. It is an activator in many enzyme reactions and is essential in the transmission of nerve impulses; contraction of cardiac, smooth, and skeletal muscles; respiration; blood coagulation; and renal function (Product Info: Calcium gluconate 1992; AHFS 1979).
Pernicious anemia and megaloblastic anemia caused by vitamin b12 deficiency (Prod Info: Folic acid tablets 1995). precautions and adverse reactions Folic acid doses above 0.1 mg/day may obscure pernicious anemia. Side effects of folic acid therapy include erythema, pruritus, urticaria, irritability, excitability, nausea, bloating, and flatulence. A variety of central nervous system effects have been reported following 5 mg of folic acid three times a day, including altered sleep patterns, vivid dreaming, irritability, excitability, and overactivity (Hunter et al 1970).

European Journal Clinical Nutrition 58: 1518-24, 2004] A vitamin b12 deficiency is now considered a risk factor for breast cancer. [Nutrition Reviews 57: 250-60, 1999] Studies show that folic acid deficiencies are related to estrogen-negative breast cancer, but not estrogen-positive breast cancer. The primary group found to develop estrogen-negative breast cancer is women who drink alcohol and have low intake of folic acid.
Nutritional deficiencies - shortages of vitamin b12, B6, folic acid, vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc and niacin - can equal the DNA damage caused by exposure to a dose of radiation. The provision of these nutrients to old animals, not only reduces their risk of developing cancer, but also slows their rate of aging. In some animal experiments conducted by Ames, old animals regained youthful function once provided with adequate nutrition. [Toxicology Letters 102-03:5-18, 1998] What Ames is saying is that nutrition, aging and cancer are related.
Frequent use of antacids often results in a vitamin b12 deficiency. The bladder must maintain acidity or bacteria will adhere to the bladder wall, resulting in bladder infection. The only exception to the rule is in the oral cavity where acid-forming streptococcus bacteria reside. The acidity of Streptococcus then eats through the enamel in teeth, resulting in dental cavities. But alternative health practitioners frequently advise their patients to test their pH orally with test strips.

Ramundo also finds that adults are helped by exercise, "very strenuous exercise, not just your three times a week, 20 minutes of aerobics, but an hour or two hours a day. Adults say it stimulates the action in the brain sufficiently that they do not need to take medicine.

I believe vitamin b12 deficiency to be one of the most common nutrient deficiencies in the United States today because of inadequate vitamin b12 levels in food and a poor absorption of vitamin b12 associated with aging. It is impossible to have a properly functioning thyroid gland without adequate vitamin b12 levels in the body. Alpha-Lipoic Acid Alpha-Lipoic Acid is a vitamin-like antioxidant that is produced naturally in the body. It is also found in various food sources including brewer's yeast, liver and potatoes.

Older people may have some trouble getting enough vitamin b12 or iron under normal conditions. With a PPI on board, this may be an even greater challenge.413 A vitamin b12 deficiency can lead to some very serious consequences. Symptoms may include anemia, fatigue, nerve damage (burning, tingling, weakness, or numbness in the hands and feet), difficulty in sensing vibration, unsteadiness, shortness of breath, and psychological side effects. Depression, confusion, and poor memory may be mistaken for early-onset Alzheimer's disease. • • • Q.

To produce red blood cells, the body needs, among other things, iron, vitamin b12, and folic acid (one of the B group of vitamins). If one or more of these ingredients is lacking, anemia will develop. Iron deficiency anemia is the most common type of anemia, particularly among women. The lack of iron is often triggered by heavy blood loss such as through menstruation or childbirth, the body's inability to absorb iron from the diet, or a diet that lacks iron-rich foods.

Long-term suppression of stomach acid can sometimes interfere with efficient absorption of vitamin b12. This nutritional deficiency can cause nervous system problems, which may show up as insomnia, memory problems, depression, burning tongue, sore mouth, difficulty walking, and tingling or numbness in feet or fingers. One reader reported a conversation with a nurse who noticed an amazing improvement in a woman with dementia after a vitamin b12 deficiency was discovered and treated. This vitamin deficiency often appears very gradually.
