We would have to eat a lot of food to get 100 mg of vitamin b-6, though. Even the foods highest in this vitamin contain less than 1 mg per serving. Foods high in vitamin b-6 include:
þ avocados (the highest, with .85 mg in a medium avocado),

Since it's difficult to eat sufficient vitamin b-6 in order to keep serotonin levels high, it's possible that many of us who don't take a supplement are B-6-depleted. This could lead to food cravings as the body attempts to increase the B-6 and serotonin supply.
Any time serotonin is low, the body will try to correct this deficiency. |

Healing Children's Attention & Behavior DisordersDr. Abram Hoffer, M.D., FRCP(C) See book keywords and concepts | | This reaction is catalyzed by pyridoxine, vitamin b-6. The reduced form is NADH. I will use NAD for the entire oxidation reduction system.
NAD -NADH
NAD is split by an enzyme called NADase which releases niacinamide, which in turn is converted into niacin, and this in turn is introduced into the pyridine nucleotide cycle into the NAD.
The body can make NAD from two sources, from 1-tryptophan and from vitamin B-3. | | I add vitamin b-6 to the regimen if the child tests positive for pyrroluria or if it is indicated by physical examination and history. I ask about stretch marks on the body, white areas in the finger nails, pale skin. I start with 250 mg daily but may go to two or three times as much. Sometimes it will increase hyperactivity but this is corrected by giving the child magnesium. A calcium magnesium tablet providing about 375 mg calcium and half that amount of magnesium will prevent this increased irritability from pyridoxine. The beneficial effect much outweighs the potential minor side effect. | | The deficiency of B vitamins (chiefly vitamin B-3 and vitamin b-6) activates this basic animal reflex for increased activity when hungry. Hyperactive children are literally running looking for more food. The hyperactivity is a replacement for the food hunting activity of the hungry animal. In adults the same primitive reflex may lead to the increased food intake. More food does in fact provide more of the B vitamins but the price probably will be obesity and the variety of techniques humans use to avoid this such as laxatives and vomiting. | | These include vitamin B-3, vitamin b-6, and others.
About 30 years ago I tested the idea that it should be possible to define a population of children who were vitamin B-3 responsive. I gave a large number of children vitamin B-3 in order to see what the children who responded had in common. I examined all seriously disturbed children referred to me. They were also evaluated by Dr B. O'Regan, a psychiatric colleague in practice in Saskatoon. These children were then given niacinamide or, rarely, niacin if there was no response to the niacinamide. | H. Healing Children's Attention & Behavior DisordersDr. Abram Hoffer, M.D., FRCP(C) See book keywords and concepts | | It does suggest that males have a greater need for supplementation with either vitamin B-3, vitamin b-6, or both than females. This idea is supported by the finding in this series that more females respond to vitamin therapy. Out of 30 females, 17 (57 percent) were normal at the last evaluation, while out of 80 males, only 26 (33 percent) were well. Being female not only protects against the development of learning and behavioral disorders, but when it does occur it is not as severe and responds better to megavitamin therapy.

"Lecithin breaks down fats, helping the body to eliminate them. Buy the capsules at a health food store. Apple cider vinegar added to the drinking water will also help to dissolve fats. Please do not give your dog or cat vinegar unless it's organic.
"These dosages are adequate for approximately every 25 lbs. of body weight. Cut in half for most cats and increase accordingly for larger dogs. | Doreen Virtue, Ph.D. See book keywords and concepts | It is also essential in metabolizing vitamin b-6, which is important in serotonin production. Cystine naturally occurs in beans, eggs, onions, and garlic.
Diphenylamine—A substance occurring naturally in chocolate. Dipheny-lamine appears to mimic the role of serotonin, leading to feelings of calm and serenity.
Dopamine—An excitatory (stimulating) neurotransmitter. Dopamine's precursor is tyrosine, which naturally occurs in aged cheese, bananas, beer, chocolate, pickled foods, sausage, vanilla, wine, and yogurt. | Ralph Golan, M.D. See book keywords and concepts | Formulas combining tryptophan with niacinamide, vitamin b-6, and other synergists of neurotransmitter metabolism will also hopefully be available again. They have sometimes produced better results than tryptophan alone, depending upon the individual. Until the FDA reverses its decision, your doctor can prescribe a metabolite of tryptophan, 5-hydroxy tryptophan, an even more effective—and more expensive—way of increasing serotonin levels. Use 100 to 400 milligrams once or twice daily. | Doreen Virtue, Ph.D. See book keywords and concepts | Take vitamin b-6 supplements. This, too, will keep your serotonin levels high enough to combat carbohydrate cravings. About 100 mg of B-6 per day is considered an optimum dosage for serotonin maintenance, and is considered a safe dosage by many experts (although you may want to check with your doctor first).5
Choose low-fat carbohydrates. Joseph Piscatella, author of Controlling Your Fat Tooth, knows the importance of this advice from personal experience.
All organisms are geared toward homeostasis, that is, the state where the body is comfortable and adequately nourished. When any essential element is low, the body tries to adjust it. | | It is an antioxidant when sufficient amounts of vitamin b-6 are in the body, and is found in beans, beef, chicken, fish, pork, seeds, eggs, onions, cottage cheese, and garlic.
Methylxanthine—The family of stimulants found naturally in cocoa, tea, coffee, and cola nuts. Caffeine, theophylline, and theobromine are the three forms of methylxanthine found in dietary forms.
Monoamine Oxidase (MAO)—Prescribed in therapies to inhibit the release of neurotransmitters, to relieve depression or anxiety. People prescribed with MAO are advised to avoid foods high in tyramine to avoid hypertension. | Gary Null, Ph.D. See book keywords and concepts | This study examined the effects of supplementation with vitamin b-6 on the growth of a human malignant melanoma cell line in vitro. Results showed that pyridoxine or pyridoxal may regulate melanoma cell growth.

Results of this in vitro study indicated that tumor necrosis factor coupled with pyridoxine may be a more effective cancer treatment than the administration of tumor necrosis factor by itself.
—E. Hofsli & A. | Ralph Golan, M.D. See book keywords and concepts | The toxicity of vitamin b-6 is minimal and reversible. Peripheral neuropathy, numbness or tingling in hands or feet, has been practically the only symptom identified, and happens very rarely when B-6 is taken according to the recommendations listed above.
Calcium
Calcium is essential for building and maintaining strong bones and teeth.19 It acts as a nerve nutrient involved in electrical transmissions of the heart and of the skeletal muscles and assists in normal blood clotting. | | Again, a diet too high in devitalized foods, which are deficient in zinc, manganese, vitamin b-6, and magnesium, or insufficient in protein will not provide the pancreas its nutritional building blocks.
Such foods are also usually lacking in fiber, and insufficient fiber is known to diminish pancreatic exocrine output.13 Too much sugar may do the same. Again, in terms of acid-base balance, if the body has become too acidotic—quite common in the standard American diet—the body will want to conserve the bicarbonate-producing ability of the pancreas to help reverse the acidosis. | David Brownstein See book keywords and concepts | Please see

5. vitamin b-6 Recommended dose: lOOmg per day.
6. Vitamin B-12 Vitamin B12 is found only in foods of animal origin, such as dairy, eggs, meat, fish and poultry. It is often deficient in those with a chronic illness. Recommended dose: lOOOmg by injection two to three times per week. I recommend only the hydroxy cobalamine form of injectable Vitamin B12 and not the cyanocobalamine form of injectable B12.
7. Vitamin C Vitamin C functions as an important anti-oxidant in the body. | Stephen T., M.D. Sinatra See book keywords and concepts | Beta carotene: Use with caution in the presence of alcoholic liver disease, cigarette smoking, or exposure to asbestos.
10. Vitamin B-6: More than 300 mg daily may cause liver and neurologic toxicity.
Later in this chapter and the next, I will give you specific recommendations concerning vitamin and mineral supplementation. Since beta carotene is water soluble and a precursor of vitamin A, I prefer using beta carotene over vitamin A. Unless your physician is treating you for osteoporosis, I would not use more than 400 IU per day of vitamin D. |
