The Recommended Dietary Allowance for vitamin b-12 is incredibly tiny, just 2 micrograms per day. That's 2 millionths of a gram. Although people often think that getting enough protein is a problem for vegetarians, it actually isn't. Vegetarians typically get plenty of protein. But there is another nutrient that can be an issue — Omega-3 fats. Getting enough of these essential fatty acids is crucial to optimum health, and can in fact be an issue for everyone today.

The results showed that smoking had a negative effect on the ability of the body to store, utilize, and benefit from vitamin b-12, and those with higher levels of B-12 showed less risk of developing cervical cancers. Smokers need more folate and more B-12 intake than those who do not smoke. Better yet, don't smoke! Earl's Rx Folic acid: Take one 800 meg. capsule or tablet daily. Lycopene: Take one 10 mg. tablet or capsule daily. Lung Cancer While breast cancer is primarily a woman's disease, lung cancer has long been regarded as a man's disease.

Sources of vitamin b-12 include all animal proteins, cheese, eggs, milk, tofu, and sea vegetables. Since B-12 is not present in most vegetables, vegetarians need to be cautious and supplement B-12 in their diet. Oral contraceptives and estrogen may also increase the need for B-12. As a supplement, I recommend 20 to 40 meg daily. Folic Acid Over the past couple of years, this B vitamin has received tremendous attention in the medical literature. The U.S.
These vitamins are found in many of the foods mentioned as good sources of vitamin b-12, with the exception of PABA, which is found in molasses, liver, and kidneys as well as whole grains. PABA is an antioxidant that may protect against sunburn and various skin cancers. Generally, there are no known toxicities if the B vitamins are taken in small amounts. In mega amounts, however, one has to utilize caution. It is also important to note that alcohol and caffeine as well as birth control pills and estrogen can increase the need for B vitamins.
For example, they are high in beta carotene, vitamin b-12, niacin, pantothenic acid (vitamin B-5), and vitamins A, C, and E, as well as the mineral selenium. As previously noted, selenium, combined with vitamins A, C, and E and coenzyme Q10, is extremely important in overall heart function. In summary, many clinical studies indicate that sea vegetables are one of nature's best nutritional supplements. They contain virtually all of the vitamins and minerals that are useful in preventing the formation of free radicals.

Protein deficiency can also promote vitamin and mineral deficiencies (in particular, vitamin b-12 deficiency). Vegetarians must take special care to be certain that their diet is appropriately balanced with all of the essential and nonessential amino acids. Historically, humans have eaten animal products, augmented with vegetables, fruits and nuts.
Vitamin B-6 Recommended dose: lOOmg per day. 6. vitamin b-12 Vitamin B12 is found only in foods of animal origin, such as dairy, eggs, meat, fish and poultry. It is often deficient in those with a chronic illness. Recommended dose: lOOOmg by injection two to three times per week. I recommend only the hydroxy cobalamine form of injectable Vitamin B12 and not the cyanocobalamine form of injectable B12. 7. Vitamin C Vitamin C functions as an important anti-oxidant in the body. Vitamin C is necessary to promote healing and is essential to maintaining joint integrity in the body.
Storing vitamins and minerals such as Vitamin A, vitamin b-12, Vitamin D, copper, iron, etc. 2. Regulating carbohydrate metabolism 3. Controlling protein metabolism 4. Facilitating fat absorption It is vitally important to maintain a healthy liver because it has such a wide range of essential functions in the body. A healthy liver is maintained by eating a diet free of pesticides, synthetic hormones and other toxins. In addition, eliminating refined foods, especially refined sugar and flour, helps to promote a healthy liver.

Compared to placebo control groups, Cascara showed good efficacy and good biological tolerance, promoted faster gastro-intestinal transit times, and, when supplemented with cianocobalamine and inositol, the treatment was marked by increased levels of vitamin b-12 (15). This latter finding showed that vitamin supplementation in conjunction with Cascara-based laxatives will help overcome vitamin deficiencies that the laxative may otherwise induce.

Experts have estimated that up to 20% of all senility in older adults is merely a long term deficiency of folic acid and vitamin b-12. The RDA of folate is 200 meg for adults and 400 meg for pregnant women, although the Center for Disease Control has recommended that 800 meg of folic acid would prevent most cases of spinal bifida. Without adequate folic acid in the body, there is a buildup of homocysteine in the blood, which probably generates 10% or more of the 1 million cases of heart disease each year in the U.S.. Cancer is not an "on-off' switch.

Thanks to the suggestion of a colleague, I tried a Kyolic supplement called Neuro-Logic, a product based on aged garlic but also containing folic acid, vitamin b-12, lecithin, ginkgo biloba, phosphatidylserine and acetyl L-Carnitine. My results were dramatic and immediate. In three days, I was experiencing just half of my problems. After four months on Neuro-Logic, I am amazingly better. Instead of having speech problems a dozen times, in an hour, I sometimes experience them only twice a month. That's why I plan to use this product for the rest of my life.

Other safety concerns have been raised about taking high doses of vitamin C, and include the possibility of increased risk for calcium oxalate kidney stones, vitamin b-12 depletion leading to pernicious anemia, increased iron absorption, depletion of copper, and increased urinary excretion of uric acid. None of these concerns have been conclusively proven.

The reality, however, is that there are typically no problems in the growth and development of vegetarian and vegan children who eat varied diets with enough calories and adequate intake of vitamin b-12." The meat industry spends even more time insinuating that iron deficiency anemia is more common in vegetarian children. But here again, the truth is far from what the industry ads would have you believe. Vegetarian children, in fact, show no greater incidence of iron deficiency anemia than any other children.

More recently, there has been evidence suggesting that giving high doses of folic acid and vitamin b-12 to smokers and women with premalignant cellular pathology reverses the lesions.910 Early reports by Dr. Charles E. Butterworth, chairman of nutrition sciences at University of Alabama, suggest that abnormal (metaplastic) sputum cytology in smokers, and precancerous pap smears in women, revert to normal if patients are maintained on 10 milligrams of folic acid and 500 micrograms of B-12 daily. These amounts are 25 and 166 times the RDA of folate and B-12, respectively.

My husband is benefiting from a related Kyolic product: Cardio Logic, with a base of aged garlic and natural vitamin E, vitamin B-6, folic acid, vitamin b-12, L-carnitine, coenzyme Q-10 and lipoic acid. After five days on Cardio Logic, he reports that the pain has slowly abated. In addition, hypomethylation of cytosine, cytosine, guanine, guanine (CCGG, a sequence of nucleotides in DNA) sites have been demonstrated in animals with severe methyl deficiency (diets lacking choline, methionine, folic acid, and vitamin b-12). It is known that CCGG sites in genes, such as c-myc, c-fos and c-Ha-ras, are involved in cellular proliferation and cancer (Christman et al. 1993). Furthermore, folate deficiency has been associated with increases in chromosomal breaks (Ames et al. 1995). These observations support the role of folic acid in cancer prevention.
Considerable research has been conducted on the role of methyl deficiency (usually including deficiencies of folic acid, vitamin b-12, choline, and methionine), DNA methylation, and the induction of liver cancer in rodents (Dizik et al. 1991, Cravo et al. 1992). However, it was not clear if the methyl-deficient conditions induced in animals were applicable to human diets, although the prevalence of inadequate folate intakes has been documented (NRC 1989a). A case-control study of colon and rectum cancer was conducted in 1975-1986 (Freudenheim et al. 1991).
