However, the toxicity of vitamin a and its analogues still remains a barrier to extensive use.
Ongoing clinical trials with P-carotene in the prevention of several forms of human cancer, including lung, oral cavity, and breast cancer, should help to determine whether the association between fruit and vegetable intake and reduced rates of cancer is due in part to the presence of P-carotene. In one recent report, neither P-carotene nor a-tocopherol supplements were effective in preventing lung cancer in Finnish men who were heavy smokers (Heinonen and Albanes 1994). |

Beta-carotene slowly reaches more parts of the body for a longer time and gives more protection than plain vitamin a. It is considered one of the most promising natural anticancer agents. Studies have shown: • Tumors took longer to develop in beta-carotene treated mice than in animals that did not get the pro-vitamin.
• Even when tumors were well-established, beta-carotene enabled the mice to live longer, with or without other treatments.
• All tumors disappeared for two months when mice were given radiation in addition to beta-carotene. Only one mouse showed a regrowth of tumor. |
| Total vitamin a intake had a "slight positive association with all prostate cancer" but not with aggressive tumors. Similar results had been seen in a study of African-American men in the Washington, DC area (7). These findings suggest that dietary intake, especially fats, may increase the risk of aggressive prostate tumors in older men (8).

| Only half of the mice that received spleen cells from animals that had gotten both canthaxanthin and vitamin a developed cancer.
By contrast, mice that received spleen cells from mice that had not been so treated, got cancer more frequently. Spleen cells from animals that had received either substance alone did not provide as much beneficial effect, however (8).
When rats were given canthaxanthin in their diet three weeks before receiving a chemical that causes breast cancer, there was a "65 percent reduction in the number of mammary cancers. |

Retinoic acid
Retinoic acid (RA) is the acid form of vitamin a.* RA is one of the most potent inducers of differentiation. However, relatively high concentrations of RA are required to induce differentiation, and the use of RA as a differentiating agent is severely hampered by its toxic effects. One strategy to overcome the toxicity problem may be to combine RA with a synergistic agent, such as DMSO. Although investigators have been studying less toxic derivatives of RA, few have proven better than the naturally occurring 13-cis-retinoic acid or all-trans retinoic acids. |
| Patients received 6 to 9 grams of cesium chloride orally per day, along with a variety of supportive compounds including zinc, selenium, vitamin a, vitamin C, and
8 Dosages used in Burton's experiments were very low at 0.05 mg cesium chloride daily (approximately 0.02 mEq/kg).
9 One mEq of cesium is equal to 133 mg of cesium.

11.3.3 Indirubin
Indirubin is a compound found in Isatis tinctoria (qing dai or da qingye). Its effects were first reported in 1978, when Chinese investigators observed that indirubin was the active agent in Dang Gui Lu Hui pills, which had previously been reported to be effective against chronic myelocytic leukemia (CML) in humans. It is not yet known how indirubin may exert its antileukemic effect. |
| In a review of prediagnostic serum levels of beta-carotene, selenium, vitamin a, and vitamin E from 10 stud\ populations for 10 cancer sites, serum levels were slightly lower for all lour lnicionutrients among those who were diagnosed with cancer in comparison to those who were not. The strongest association was between low levels of beta-carotene and the subsequent development of lung cancer. Results indicate that it is unlikely that any one of these micronutrients is associated with protection against all cancer types. |
| Alpha-tocopherol, beta carotene cancer prevention study group, 1994
Administration of vitamin a (350,000 to 500,000 IU) significantly increased response rates, duration of response, and projected survival in postmenopausal patients with metastatic breast cancer who were treated by chemotherapy.

In a crossover study on 18 patients with mucosal dysplasia of the head and neck region (a recognized premalignant lesion), supplementation with beta-carotene and cis-retinoic acid resulted in improvement in 61% of the subjects, and a complete response in 33%.

Still further complexity is found in products such as alkaloids that arise from combinations of these pathways.
Complexity and Variability
The identity of the specific constituents in the minor and major components of food—the qualitative composition—is in large part determined genetically. Environmental factors also affect qualitative composition and influence quantitative composition. |

Furthermore, a vitamin a deficiency can lead to the insufficient production of synovial fluid; when this occurs, the joints lack proper lubrication, the cartilage becomes subject to drying and cracking, and movement becomes difficult and painful.
Because lubrication is vital to the smooth functioning of the joints, vitamin E, whose primary role is to protect against the destruction of the essential fatty acids by oxidation, is also an important antiarthritic nutrient. |

Beta Carotene
Beta carotene, a building block for vitamin a, may help reduce the risk of heart disease or even some types of cancer. This supplement may be harmful, however, to people who are regular or heavy drinkers. In studies on baboons, the combination of alcohol and beta carotene led to more liver damage than that produced by alcohol exposure alone. This work needs to be confirmed with further research on humans. See page 144 for further details.

| Synthetic E will not prevent the oxidation of vitamin a.) It also helps cell respiration so cells are able to manage with less oxygen.
The blood flow is improved by Vitamin E and it causes blood vessels to dilate or expand. It is an inhibitor of improper blood coagulation thus it helps prevent blood clots. It is, for example, far safer than preformed vitamin a, which is stored in the body and can build up to dangerous levels. Beta carotene has one important and little-known interaction, however. Long-term supplementation (15 mg daily up to 60 mg) lowers blood levels of vitamin E significantly. These two antioxidants seem to work together, for beta carotene protects from heart attack most strongly when people also have high vitamin E levels.7 Therefore, it would be prudent, if you plan to take beta carotene as a preventive measure, to take vitamin E as well. |

Beta carotene, with which the body can make vitamin a as it is needed, is a safer alternative.
Zinc is essential for increasing white blood activity in response to infection. When cystitis is acute, approximately 50 mg elemental zinc is needed daily.
The classes of herbs used to treat cystitis include antiseptic herbs, demulcents, and diuretics. Antiseptic herbs for bladder infections include uva-ursi, buchu, goldenseal, juniper berries, and garlic. "Think garlic whenever you have any type of infection, including cystitis," says Dr. Wharton. |

It is a precursor to vitamin a, and people are swallowing these little orange pills with great enthusiasm. You can get beta carotene from carrots, other orange fruits and vegetables, and green leafy vegetables such as spinach, chard, and kale.
The excitement about beta carotene surrounds its antioxidant properties. This pharmacological action may help prevent heart disease and even certain cancers. But heavy drinkers, beware. Researchers at the Bronx Veterans Administration Hospital have found that the combination of booze and beta carotene could be hard on the liver. |

Other nutrients that directly enhance the immune system include garlic, quercetin, zinc gluconate, buffered vitamin C, and beta carotene or vitamin a. In addition, 500 mg of the amino acid L-lysine, taken two to four times a day, can produce excellent results. Bee propolis is anti-inflammatory, while B vitamins combat stress. Also good are bee pollen, blue-green algae, and pycnogenol.
Nervous system stressors, such as caffeine, alcohol, and hard-to-digest foods like meat, should be avoided, especially at the onset of an attack. |
| It should be noted, however, that any dietary supplements used should be low in vitamin a, niacin, copper, and iron, the levels of which tend to be elevated in pill users."
Another reason the pill affects female fertility is that it promotes the growth of chlamydia, Seaman says. "This condition has reached epidemic proportions in the United States, with over half a million new cases yearly. Chlamydia causes pelvic inflammatory disease, which can then cause sterility. Usually, the first time it strikes, chlamydia does not render a woman sterile. |
