| Antacids, calcium, and zinc interfere with iron absorption and should be taken separately; however, ascorbic acid and vitamin a both reduce anemia when taken together with iron.
Caution must be taken with iron supplementation; an excess has been linked to cancer and to liver, heart, and pancreas damage. (See below.)
IN GENERAL
Anemia may be due to iron deficiency (the most common cause), to B12 deficiency (usually due to an absorption problem rather than a dietary lack), or to folic acid deficiency, which can be a problem because the body does not store large amounts of this nutrient. |

Fortified sugar" appeared on the market with a list of vitamins and minerals on the package: Iodine, iron, vitamin C, four B complex vitamins, and 400 units of vitamin a.
What were the sugar pushers to do? They could lick them or join them. Joining presented certain problems. If the peddlers of refined white sugar were going to compete by listing their vitamins and minerals on the package, they would have nothing to reveal except a string of zeroes. |

For example, too much vitamin a can be poisonous. As a corollary, conventional wisdom says that if a lot is bad, then less will be safer. Many of those who work in the field of risk assessment and toxicology are still guided by these old rules. However, the endocrine system responds to tiny quantities of hormone messengers: minute amounts of endocrine disruptors can elicit a response and cause changes. Frederick vom Saal, a noted scientist in the field, has a different perspective. |

| Zinc works in conjunction with vitamin a to promote healing. Without zinc, the cells necessary to form new tissue cannot be created. Vitamin E has also been recognized as helpful in speeding the healing process.
Two other nutrients are worth trying. They are vitamin B3 (or nicotinamide) and glutamine. Vitamin B3 has been shown to be strongly connected to increased healing rates in wounds, as has the amino acid glutamine. Though the precise reason why glutamine aids healing is unknown, we do know that levels of glutamine are depleted by injury or disease. |

Floaters and Flashers
Floaters and flashers are tiny dark specks or spots that appear before your eyes. Like presbyopia, they usually occur when you're at least forty. Also like presbyopia, they signify the aging of the eye: The spots are caused when the fluid that fills the inside of the eyeball begins to thin out. |

Chicory is also an excellent source of potassium, calcium, and vitamin a. A popular salad vegetable, chicory can be blanched to reduce the bitter flavor.
Ogden Nash once opined that "Parsley's gharsley," but this relative of rosemary and cilantro has long been believed to contain magical properties. What's more, the second study showed that the supplements might actually be harmful. |

I have also found vitamin a helpful to lessen the symptoms from autoimmune thyroid problems.
Selenium can be a useful nutrient for individuals with autoimmune thyroid disorders. Selenium has been shown to slow the progression of autoimmune thyroid disorders. In these disorders, anti-thyroid antibody levels are produced which damage the thyroid gland. Selenium supplementation has been shown to
Q lower these antibody levels. Selenium is deficient in our diet due to low levels of selenium in the soil. |
| Correcting a deficiency in either vitamin a or Vitamin E will improve thyroid function.
Vitamin B12
When cattle were fed a diet that resulted in a Vitamin B12 deficiency the result was a significant reduction in the conversion of T4 to T3. I believe Vitamin B12 deficiency to be one of the most common nutrient deficiencies in the United States today because of inadequate Vitamin B12 levels in food and a poor absorption of Vitamin B12 associated with aging. It is impossible to have a properly functioning thyroid gland without adequate Vitamin B12 levels in the body. |
| I also found her deficient in numerous vitamin levels, including vitamin a and Vitamin D. Her thyroid tests revealed an inability to convert inactive thyroid hormone (T4) to active thyroid hormone (T3) and she had low basal body temperatures, indicating a hypothyroid condition. Katie's diet was also lacking in adequate amounts of protein. I made recommendations to improve her diet (eating whole foods, increasing fish) and emphasized the importance of eliminating artificial sweeteners, as well as correcting the nutritional deficits. |
