The effectiveness of these assorted uses probably depends on the herb's high nutritive content, which includes vitamin a, several B vitamins, vitamin C, phosphorous, zinc and calcium.
HOREHOUND's popularity as a cough remedy can hardly be disputed. Not so well known is the fact that Horehound and/or its derivatives are used in virtually thousands of bronchial medications around the world (17). Its activity is no doubt due to a high content of volatile oil. This oil has vasodilatory, as well as expectorant properties (18). |
| Dandelion greens are richer in vitamin a than even carrots, and exceed the Vitamin B, C and D content of most other traditional vegetables. See Also skin; diabetes; blood purification/detoxification; liver disorders
YELLOW DOCK ROOT achieves its tonic properties through the astringent purification of the blood supply to the glands. Like other herbs in this blend, it is often used in seasonal cleanses and other blood detoxification programs. |
| Thyroxine, the major thyroid hormone aids in protein synthesis, carbohydrate absorption and the conversion of carotene to vitamin a. Kelp not only absorbs iodine from seawater but sponges up an enormous supply of essential nutrients, and delivers them to the thyroid gland and the rest of the body. These nutrients include protein, essential fatty acid, carbohydrates, fiber, trace elements, sodium and potassium salts, and a variety of other chemicals, such as alginic acid (2). |
| Other Applications: To lower serum cholesterol levels; radiation, microwave exposure; to obtain sufficient fiber (colitis, obesity, appendicitis, constipation, gallstones, etc.); vitamin a absorption, colds, flu, cancer prevention, atherosclerosis.
USE: 1. Prevention and General Purpose: 2-4 capsules per day.
2. Treatment: 2 capsules every 8 hours as needed.
3. Vitamin C supplementation will enhance this blend's effectiveness.
Contraindications: None. Be sure to supplement with Vitamin E (200 I.U. daily) when using any product that contains raw Alfalfa. |

| Asparagus, in addition to being extremely high in vitamin a (which can dissolve stones), is rich in a food factor called asparagin, which acts as a gentle stimulant to kidney function, and is of particular value in cases of dropsy (edema). It is said that the juice of this vegetable helps the breaking up of oxalic acid crystals in the kidneys. A biochemist recommends cooked asparagus pureed, 4 tablespoons twice daily, morning and evening (diluted with water, if desired, and used as a cold or hot drink). It is harmless, he says, and has been known for 200 years to dissolve kidney stones. |
| Although not high in vitamin a, lemon juice can dissolve kidney stones. Simply drink the juice of one or two lemons a day (mixed with water and sweetened to taste). Large kidney stones have been dissolved this way, and small ones immediately stop forming, says one doctor. Symptoms vanish at once, he says, adding that it was effective in about 50 percent of all cases of large kidney stones.
Parsley juice is valuable in removing poisons from the body, and is well-known for dissolving gravel and kidney stones. |
| Its high vitamin a has a healing effect on the mucous membranes of the nose and throat. Mrs. W.L. says: "I would like to tell you of the good results I have had with cod-liver oil. For 11 years I suffered from congested, infected, painful sinuses. Doctors usually prescribed antibiotics and anti-histamines that did not give satisfactory relief. The condition worsened, producing blood in the mucus. Alarmed, I consulted a specialist. But all he could do was write out two standard prescriptions. Then I remembered my grandmother had given me cod-liver oil as a child. |

Carrot juice is rich enough in potassium to help neutralize this excess acid and contains an incredible amount of vitamin a to assist the liver in removing such toxins from the body.
Heavy Metal Accumulations. Most of us are exposed to heavy metals in the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the pesticide-sprayed leafy greens we eat. Other exposure may come from certain cookware we prepare our foods in, or the consumption of peeled paint flakes from walls by small and curious children in old tenement dwellings. |

THERAPEUTIC BENEFITS
King Henry VIII (1491-1547) was one of England's more illustrious— if not somewhat infamous—monarchs. His social relations, especially with women, left much to be desired. In fact, some of his many ex-wives were either imprisoned, banished, or beheaded, depending on his mood at the time their separate fates were being decided. |

Treatment with either a 100,000 IU or 200,000 IU dose of vitamin a was effective against Bitot's spots in Indonesian children. Long-term oral therapy with daily doses of 18,000 IE retinol, 70 mg
L-cystine, and 700 mg gelatin led to an improvement of diffuse hair loss relative to controls.
Treatment with vitamins A and E for 28-48 days improved symptoms in forty middle-aged to elderly patients affected by presbycusis (hearing loss). Topical treatment of primary herpetic keratitis with 0.25 percent of retinoic acid significantly reduced the severity of epithelial lesions in rabbits. |
| A to adequate from inadequate levels during the various stages of development.
Beta-carotene supplementation at doses of 30 mg per day or more for two months significantly enhanced immune reaction in elderly volunteers. Alzheimer's patients have been found to have significantly lower plasma levels of vitamin E and vitamin a than controls. Inverse associations have also been noted between serum concentrations and dietary levels of beta-carotene and the risk of development of cataracts. |
| Black Walnut
Black walnut is a rich dietary source of protein, iodine, chromium, potassium, manganese, vitamin a, and vitamin C which has been used to relieve symptoms of constipation and poor digestion going all the way back to the time of ancient Greece. It is a widely recognized blood cleanser and oxygenizer, blood sugar stabilizer, and is often used topically to treat bruises, rashes, herpes, fungal infections, boils, canker sores, and gum disease. Studies have shown the consumption of 84 g per day of black walnuts can significantly lower serum cholesterol levels in healthy men. |
| With respect to mice, results showed that vitamin C and vitamin a supplementation administered at the start of tumor development reduced both tumor take and rate of growth and prolonged host survival relative to controls.
Another trial compared 294 incurable patients treated with supplemental ascorbate with 1532 untreated patients who served as controls over a 4.5-year period. The median survival time of the ascorbate group was 343 days, compared to 180 days for the controls. |
| Animal studies point to the anti-cancer effects of vitamin a and beta-carotene. Similar results have been seen in vitro.
As with cancer, studies show an inverse association between plasma levels of vitamins A and beta-carotene and the risk of heart disease. Supplementation has also produced direct results. |
| Daily oral administration of 300,000 IU of vitamin a for twelve months significantly reduced the number of tobacco related new primary tumors in lung cancer patients relative to controls.
Supplementation with vitamins A, C, and E in patients with colorectal adenomas six months after complete polypectomy lead to a reduction in abnormalities in cell kinetics that may indicate a precancerous condition. |

According to modern nutritional thinking, milk (and today that means pasteurized, homogenized, vitamin a and D fortified cow's milk) is an "excellent food" beause of its high volume of component elements such as protein and calcium. The fat content of milk has recently come under criticism, so that it is now considered desirable to consume "skim" or "low-fat" milk (although the American Academy of Pediatrics does not recommend low-fat milk for infants). As we have seen in chapter two (see page 55), human mother's milk has somewhat more fat than cow's milk. |
| In other words, if you take a vitamin a pill in the morning, you may be spending the afternoon looking for the rest of the carrot.
Another way in which the body may try to right an imbalance— other than by adding the missing elements—is to expel the excess. The recommendations to take vitamins are often accompanied with a statement to the effect that if any are taken in excess, the body will simply get rid of them. This is quite true. What we fail to consider, however, is how this excretion will be accomplished, or through which organ: kidneys, intestines, lungs, or skin. |
| Taking the vitamin a alone will make us relatively deficient in all the elements that usually accompany it in the carrot (or in other natural foods). And how does the body respond when it perceives itself as deficient? It reaches for something to correct the deficiency: In this case, it may go for "the chewy part" and develop a case of the "munchies." Every time I bring up this concept in a class or a counseling session, eyes light up—ahh, is that why I'm overeating even when I'm not hungry? Is that why I've been putting on weight since I started a "health regime"? Yes, indeed, yes. |
| But when we take the vitamin a out of the carrot, put it in a pill with sugars or starches, and swallow that, our body system will be surprised. As it's not used or suited to metabolizing a single element, it soon starts asking, "Where are all the other guys? Where's the chewy part?"
It has been well established that vitamins in the B complex (thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, Bg, Bi2 and so on) are interdependent: Taking one of them increases the need for the others.15 In other words, taking Be tablets can make us relatively deficient in Bx, B2, B12, and all the others. Why? |

| DRUGLESS TREATMENT
The medical treatment for acne and other forms of skin disease consists of salves, ointments, lotions, x-rays, various drug injections and occasionally the use of vitamin a in the form of fish liver oil and synthetic vitamin B. These external applications and injections occasionally suppress the disease temporarily, but there is usually a recurrence as soon as treatment ends. These treatments often fail to provide even temporary relief, since the cause is ignored, say drugless doctors. |

Furthermore, vitamin a is high in cow's milk only because it's added to it, and there is no reason it could not be added to non-dairy beverages if there was some advantage to doing so.5'

I usually recommend vitamin a in mycellized form. When the body is fighting an illness, is under stress, or is simply aging, it loses its ability to manufacture its own mycelles, the basic unit of absorption for vitamins A, D, E, and K, beta-carotene, essential fatty acids, and lecithin. Mycellization is a natural process of manufacturing water-soluble fat for easy absorption. |
| It has been demonstrated both in experimental and clinical applications that carotenoids and retinoids (the form of vitamin a released from the liver) inhibit carcinogenesis in the promotional stage. One form of retinoid (13-cis-retinoic acid) is being tested in various cancers and is showing promise. Some of these cancers include squamous cell carcinoma cell lines, both acute and chronic myelocytic leukemia, ovarian cancer, small-cell lung cancer, neuroblastoma, and multiple myeloma. |
| Be careful, however, not to use too much because over a considerable period of time its strong absorptive powers could render vitamin a and other necessary nutrients unavailable by absorbing them from the alimentary canal. Studies have shown no ill effects when the intake of bentonite did not exceed 25 percent of the total diet.3
Dose: Vi to 2 teaspoons added to water or a water/juice mix; stir and let stand for a while or overnight, and drink once a day until diarrhea stops. |
| In this study, postsurgical lung cancer patients were given vitamin a in doses of 300,000 IU daily for a period of fourteen months. At the time of analysis, there was a relapse rate of 18 percent in the treated group and 28 percent in the control group. The largest difference between the groups was observed for bone metastases (two versus seven) and brain metastases (three versus six), and only two new cases of primary cancer were detected, both in the control group. |
