| After six weeks of 50,000 units of vitamin a daily, these symptoms and signs disappeared. Then I would advise him to take the 50,000 units but once a week, eat some carrots, and other A-bear-ing foods. I guessed at the dose, the length of time that he should take it, and how much he needed for the rest of his life. To be safe I also suggested the use of beta-carotene, the A precursor, if I thought his liver could convert it to the A form. I was guessing, but at least I knew in which direction to guess. |
| I have found that I need vitamin a. As a child I had warts all over my hands after the A-destroying hard measles complicated by a mastoiditis. Now if I get a cold or the flu and it settles in my chest, I take a shot of A (50,000 units) and 500,000 units orally for a few days; the infection clears up in three days instead of twenty.
The C works if the infection is from the neck up and A works if the infection is in my chest below my Adam's apple. I have always loved the A-bearing foods, like carrot, squash, and sweet potato. (I steal parsley from other diners' plates. |
| Natural control can be achieved with vitamin C (1000 mg every hour), Echinacea, thymus gland, Hypericum, berberis, goldenseal, myrrh, oregano, garlic, onions, tree tea oil, vitamin a and zinc, dandelion root, chaparral, burdock root, licorice root, and sarsaparilla.
Cancer
Allopathic control is limited to surgery, chemotherapy, and X-ra-diation. Natural methods try to boost the immune system once the tumor has been excised. Twenty grams of vitamin C per day is standard, along with A, Hoxey formula, Essiac formula (burdock, sheep sorrel, turkey rhubarb, slippery elm). |
| Note the excess vitamin a, B2, and C, and deficiency of vitamins E, B12, D, biotin, and magnesium.
"A BALANCED DIET:" THE THIRD DAY
Following a "balanced diet," you'll note the inconsistency of the nutrient levels. Research shows that such a diet cannot provide balanced nutrition, even according to the RDA standards. Note that some of the levels are high day after day, compounding the imbalance; vitamin C is the only nutrient consistently in excess, while the majority of the others are very deficient. |

For example, vitamin a in megadoses can cause serious malformations of the developing brain when given to pregnant mothers during this critical period.
It is entirely possible that the blood-brain barrier does not develop and mature at the same rate throughout the brain. Some areas are more likely to mature later than others. There is some experimental evidence that this is true, at least with regard to the hypothalamus. |

Also, a cleft palate and harelip may be due to a vitamin a deficiency.
Availability. This vitamin is available from many fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds, as well as in cod and halibut-liver oil, chicken and calf liver, egg yolk, cheese, whole milk and butter. |
| The eyes are especially vulnerable to a vitamin a deficiency. The malnutrition of the eyes and appurtenant tissues makes it especially difficult to see well under trying conditions, especially at night. There is difficulty in tolerating bright lights and often there is an itching, burning, and dryness of the eyes, perhaps accompanied by dancing specks and flashes. The impaired vision is usually accompanied by eyestrain, often with the presence of sticky secretions and granulations in the eyes. |
| Insufficient vitamin a is likely to decrease the amount of acid required by the stomach to digest food, and diarrhea may be an obvious symptom.
There may also be an inability to gain weight, and in fact there is likely to be a decrease in weight. The hair may start to fall out and become gray, and there may be a disposition toward abscesses of the scalp. Small pus formations (pustules) may form on the scalp and on other parts of the skin. The forearms and the thighs will be especially noticeable for the roughness and scaliness. |
| Experiments with animals by feeding them rancid fat produced deficiency diseases of the type that would occur in the event of vitamin a or E deficiencies. Further study with humans is badly needed to ascertain the precise effect of intake of rancid fat.
FOLIC ACID
Value. Folic acid has been recognized as one of the B vitamins necessary for good nutrition. Its chemical formula is C19H19N706 and it is slightly soluble in water and easily oxidized in acid and sunlight. It helps in the growth of a healthy blood system and aids the intestinal tract to stay healthy. |
| Apparently stones will form from a deficiency in vitamin a, and there are undoubtedly other factors about body chemistry in regard to stone formation that are still unknown. A shortage of Vitamin B6 has also been associated with calcium-oxalate stone formation. It has been suggested that no healthful food should be avoided but emphasis placed on complete protein and mineral balances, and to avoid deficiencies of any of the important nutrients.
Results of deficiency. Little is known about the results of deficiency of oxalic acid. |

No amount of vitamin a administered at that late stage can cause the eyes to grow back.
Likewise, a child whose legs become bowed by rickets, a vitamin-D deficiency disease, can never achieve a normal bone structure again, no matter how much vitamin D he receives.
In cancer, the process is different. Instead of normal tissue failing to form or becoming ma/formed, it literally becomes destroyed. The cancerous growth invades and corrupts, leaving behind organs that cannot function because they are almost gone. |

Some products are therefore fortified with vitamin a. Check the label to be sure.
Powdered milk is marketed as powdered whole milk or powdered skim milk. Both have had most of their water removed. The powdered skim milk has also had most of the fat removed before it is dried. Powdered milk of either variety is much less expensive than the fluid form from which it is derived. In general, powdered milk costs only one-third as much as whole milk. It possessed the same nutritional advantages of the liquid milk and produces the same problems as well. |

Nutritionists who apply the mechanistic, scientific viewpoint believe it doesn't matter if you get your vitamin a by eating a carrot—or by popping a vitamin pill. Measurable quantity is all.
This approach to nutrition is deeply ingrained in us. No lecture on nutrition seems complete without a recommendation for taking certain amounts of vitamins or minerals, and we talk about grams of protein—we who have never weighed a protein in our lives— with the same certainty with which we consider pounds of meat. |

Schmidt points out that children who suffer viral infections, such as measles and chicken pox, commonly experience decreases in blood levels of vitamin a that may last for six to 12 months. This renders them more susceptible to secondary bacterial infections of the ears, nose, and throat.20 Also, nutrient deficiencies that affect immune function have been found in various groups of children. For example, U.S. children had the lowest blood levels of vitamin E of any children in the industrialized world—half the level of Japanese children. |
| Braly notes that supplements should include zinc, vitamin a, and evening primrose oil.
Herbal Medicine: Enteric-coated peppermint oil is used in Europe to treat IBS. Without enteric coating, the peppermint oil is absorbed in the upper digestive tract, often causing heartburn and esophageal reflux (stomach acid regurgitating into the esophagus). Ginger also has a long history of use to relieve digestive complaints.16 Herbs such as chamomile, valerian, rosemary, and balm have antispasmodic effects on the intestines. |
| Pregnant women should not take high doses of vitamin a, as it may adversely affect the fetus.)
Garlic (Allium sativum): Take in high doses at the same time as the vitamins. Garlic has been shown to protect against flu viruses and to enhance antibody production.12 The active ingredient in garlic, allicin, which also provides its pungent odor, is rendered inactive by heat. Cooked garlic is not only less odorous, but it has also lost many of its medicinal properties. For this reason, Dr. |
| Avoid excess vitamin a (above 10,000 IU per day) to reduce the risk of birth defects.
• Avoid the use of herbal medicines without proper consultation with a medical herbalist.
• Educate yourself about healthy lifestyle choices (including exercise, such as breathing techniques and Kegel exercises) and become informed about the many medical options available to you during pregnancy, labor, and the birth itself. Once your baby is born, consider breast-feeding, which has been shown to increase young babies' health and can deepen the emotional bond between mother and child. |
| Unfortunately, the liver must be functioning optimally in order to convert vitamin a to abscisic acid, plus the acid can be destroyed by cooking. However, the liver function of cancer patients is often subpar. To help counteract this condition, Dr. Livingston recommended drinking carrot juice with liver powder. She also advocated eating a near raw foods diet as a method of preserving their abscisic acid content. No sugar, refined flours, or high-sodium foods are allowed, and few (if any) animal foods, because of their high likelihood of being contaminated.185

A healthful diet, with or without carrots, gives you all the vitamin a you need. the reading contact in your other eye. "It's not as hard to adjust to as it sounds," Dr. Bensinger says. "You don't have to consciously adjust to it every time you change your focus." Monovision lenses are made like regular contacts and are less expensive than bifocal contacts, he says.
In addition to presbyopia, spots and floaters may appear more often as you get older. These are little specks or dots that pop up occasionally in your field of vision, then disappear after an hour or a day or more. Dr. |
| He suggests taking 15 milligrams of beta-carotene once a day, 2,500 IU of vitamin a twice a day, 500 milligrams of vitamin C twice a day, 200 milligrams (or 134 IU) of vitamin E twice a day and 50 micrograms of selenium twice a day.
Trim the fat. A high-fat diet, like many American men eat, is believed to trigger cancer. Researchers aren't certain why fat promotes tumors, but several factors could play a role, Dr. Mansfield says. Some suspect that fatty foods spark the production of bile acids that interact with bacteria in the colon to form carcinogens. |
| While vitamin a in supplement form can be toxic, you can get this added protection by eating more yellow or orange vegetables and fruits such as carrots, squash, sweet potatoes, cantaloupe, apricots and nectarines as well as green leafy vegetables such as spinach.
Go commercial. Using an over-the-counter wart or corn remover (such as Occlusal) can rid you of plantar warts, says Dr. Braver. These products are available at drugstores.
Don't go barefoot. The best way to avoid plantar warts is to wear shoes or sandals, says Dr. Braver. |
| Otherwise, avoid single supplements—especially vitamin a, vitamin D and iron, says Dr. Thomas. High doses can be toxic, producing nasty side effects such as vomiting, hair loss, bone abnormalities, anemia and renal, liver and cardiovascular damage.
Let content be your guide. Generic and store brands are typically comparable in quality to big-name brands, says Dr. Thomas. In fact, generics are often produced by manufacturers of the big-name brands but cost a lot less. Your pharmacist should be able to tell you if a generic is worthwhile.
Stay away from "super-supplements. |
| But unlike vitamin a, beta-carotene is not toxic and can be taken as a supplement with little danger. Dr. Osband suggests taking six to nine milligrams a day.
Don't forget B6. "When older people were fed diets deficient in vitamin B6, their immunity was lowered substantially," Dr. Blumberg says. "When their intake was then increased one step at a time, immunity gradually returned to normal—but only after intake of more than 1.6 milligrams was provided."
You can get the RDA of 2 milligtams of vitamin B6 by eating two latge bananas. |

As fresh carrots are an important source of vitamin a, individuals deficient in this vitamin may be suffering
Fat: 0.3 gm. Carbohydrates: 9.3 gm. Calcium: 39 mg. Iron: .8 mg. Phosphorus: 37 mg. from colds, due to the tendency of the cells of the skin and mucous membrane to dry up and become horny-like when deprived of this vitamin. This deficiency may cause the liver, kidneys and other glands, including the genital organs, to suffer. One symptom of lack of this vitamin is a loss of ability to smell. Another symptom is diarrhea. |

While SLE usually lasts a lifetime, it can be remedied with high amounts of vitamin a, mineral salts, and natural carbohydrates. Carrot juice meets all of this criteria very nicely. But so as not to subject the liver to an excessive amount of carrot juice, which would tend to turn the skin a yellowish-orange hue, it's recommended that the juice be diluted with an equal amount of liquid chlorophyll of some kind.

A high incidence of respiratory ailments often occurs in patients suffering from diarrhea because their systems are depleted of vitamin a. (This vitamin is important in preventing infections and keeping the tissues healthy.)
In diarrhea cases blood sugar is also low, and the patient is left open to other physical disorders since blood sugar must be maintained at a certain level or exhaustion, weakness, allergies, blackouts, and other problems are likely to occur.

Another possible sex-rejuvenating property contained in fenugreek is trimethylamine. Scientific studies show that it acts as a sex hormone in frogs, causing them to prepare for mating.
How Fenugreek Seeds Are Used
The Chinese advise that fenugreek seeds be used daily in powdered form, adding the powder to soups, broths, vegetable or fruit juices, or sprinkling it over foods. Fenugreek seeds are also available in tablets which may be used instead of the powder. |
| Their therapeutic value is scientifically defined as follows:
• Vitamin A: Important for keeping the mucous linings of the stomach healthy.
• Vitamin K: Helps the blood clot properly and protects against hemorrhages.
• Vitamin U: This vitamin is known as the anti-peptic ulcer dietary factor. It is also present in cabbage juice and was discovered in 1949 by Dr. Garnett Cheney, a physician from Stanford Medical School. Dr. Cheney treated his ulcer patients with cabbage juice and found that 62 out of 65 of his patients responded in half the time necessary for the usual type ulcer therapy. |
