One pint of fresh carrot juice contains 20,000 international units of beta-carotene, which your body converts to vitamin a.
Juicers are sold in department stores and some health food stores. You can also purchase them through mail order, from companies that advertise in vegetarian publications. dietitian in Charlotte, North Carolina. "If you eat a reasonable variety of foods, you won't have a problem getting enough protein. In fact, as long as you consume enough calories to meet your energy needs, you'd have to work hard to devise a protein-deficient diet."
Vegetarians can't get enough iron. |
| But as Somer notes, you really don't need to take supplemental vitamin a. Instead, take beta-carotene, which your body converts to A on an as-needed basis.
Avoid unnecessary extras. "Even if your diet is less than perfect, you almost certainly get enough biotin, vitamin K, phosphorus, potassium, and sodium," Somer says. "You don't need to take supplements of them." But if your insurance formula contains these nutrients, that's okay, too.
Choose bargains over brands. In terms of quality, most supplements are created equal. |

Selenium
As critical to cancer resistance as this nutrient is, it is ironic that supplements of selenium were added to animal feeds decades before they were made available to the public. |

Here, at last, was the discovery of factors that caused health. vitamin a (1912, the first vitamin to be discovered) was named retinol because, without it, a healthy retina in the eye could not be formed. Then it was found to cure night blindness. And that was just the beginning. Along came the B vitamins and the cures for beri-beri, pellagra, pernicious anemia, nerve degeneration, enlarged heart, energy production, and much more. These factors all came from unprocessed, whole, natural foods. |

A cup of sliced peaches provides one-tenth of the daily requirement of vitamin a and fiber. Yellow peaches are probably richer sources of beta-carotene than the white variety.
Peanuts. See Nuts and Seeds.
Pears
In northeast America, autumn is synonymous with the arrival of a new crop of pears. Their colors rival the glory of fall leaves. Whether you choose a green Bartlett, which ripens to a golden yellow, or a red Seckle pear, your pear will provide you with a healthy dose of pectin, the soluble fiber that helps lower blood cholesterol levels. |
| The Recommended Dietary Allowance for vitamin a is 800 to 1,000 micrograms of retinol equivalents. A half-cup of beta-carotene-rich food every other day should help you meet this goal.
Onions and Garlic
The entire family of vegetables known as the allium family, which includes onions, leeks, scallions, garlic, chives, and shallots are sources of diallyl sulfide, which increases the activity of an enzyme that protects cells, particularly stomach cells from attack by cancer-causing free radicals. Daily intake of these vegetables should help in the prevention of cancer. |

According to table 4.1, vitamin a and iron have been the most depleted in the past thirty years. Table 4.2 shows mineral changes in various vegetables over a thirty-year period. Leafy green vegetables are promoted in many nutrition books as a good source of calcium, but depending on growth conditions, that may or may not be the case. Buy organically grown fruits and vegetables for higher nutritional content.

| Fat-soluble vitamins and unsaturated fatty acids are important to the gastrointestinal tract. vitamin a complex, B complex, E complex, and unsaturated fatty acids (especially omega-3 fatty acids) are all beneficial. Foods rich in these fat-associated nutrients are often a source of mucilage (gum-like gels). For example, the 12 percent mucilage content of flax seeds makes them the best natural laxative. I use crushed flax seeds in most gastrointestinal tract diseases. |

Eli Seifter, professor of biochemistry of the New York-based Albert Einstein College of Medicine, wrote, "When the body is subjected to stress, the immune response suffers and the thymus gland, which is vital to the cell's protection, tends to shrink. vitamin a increases the size of the thymus which apparently stimulates the body's defense against disease [emphasis added]."
The thymus's shrinking comes after disease and malnutrition. As medical researchers return to the "useless gland" (as it is called in many post-World War II texts) for answers, nutrition will be the answer. |

One dog may require five times as much vitamin a or vitamin D as another dog. I believe that there is biochemical individuality among animals and that nutritional needs differ quantitatively from animal to animal. Although all dogs require the same nutritional needs, each individual animal has a biochemical pattern all its own. This pattern is dependent upon circumstantial and environmental conditions.
With food and food concentrates containing whole nutritional complexes, the body can choose the nutrients it needs for assimilation and excrete what it does not need. |

• The nutrients most critical to fluid flow in the lymphatics are vitamin C, vitamin a, and folic acid.
Step 5b. Use Drugs
• Infections in the arm affected by lymphedema can be sudden and severe. Women at risk often keep antibiotics handy for immediate treatment of any infection. See page 180 for information on anti-infective herbal allies.
• Steroids such as cortisone may be suggested if the lymphedema seems to be caused by obstruction to rather than removal of the lymphatics. |

The authoritative textbook The Vitamins in Medicine, Third Edition, by Bicknell and Prescott, reports, "Lowered local resistance to infection is the most important result from the changes in the epithelia brought about by lack of vitamin a."
Bicknell and Prescott say this about vitamin D: "During the last century in England cod-liver oil was greatly prized for its value in tuberculosis which has been amply confirmed, at least as regards vitamin D in the treatment of some forms of tuberculosis, in recent years. |

This type of food concentrate contains all the natural factors associated with and part of the vitamin complex, including unsaturated fatty acids; vitamin a, D, and K complexes; and trace elements such as selenium, zinc, manganese, enzymes, etc.17 It has now been established that there are interactions between vitamin E and other nutrients in foods. Recognized but then forgotten was the fact that whole natural vitamin E, such as found in wheat germ, beans, or other foods, loses up to 90 percent of its potency when separated from its natural synergists. |
| Vitamin E complex is important in stabilizing cell membranes; protecting cells and tissues such as lungs, skin, eyes, liver, muscles, kidneys, and heart from free radical damage and damage from pollutants; helping to regulate the use and storage of vitamin A; protecting red blood cells from damage; and preventing cancer.
Vitamin E in foods, once separated from its whole complex, is not stable when stored. To improve its stability or shelf life and thus make it commercially viable, drug companies esterify it, a chemical conversion to protect the vitamin from deterioration. |

For instance, wild dandelion greens may contain as much as five times more vitamin a (as beta carotene) than greenhouse-grown varieties, and, in addition, up to ten times the potassium levels.
Dandelion greens
These are not difficult to find. They are right in your lawn. They are most edible during the spring and early summer. The best greens are the young leaves, which may grow under the older leaves. Older leaves are fibrous and inedible, that is they are mostly cellulose. Be sure the dandelion greens you pick are from an area not sprayed with pesticides. |

• Supplemental antioxidants in large, and potentially harmful, daily doses-such as 100,000 units beta-carotene, 350 mg coenzyme Ojo, 100 meg selenium (sodium selenite), 200 mg germanium, 100,000 units vitamin a, 1,000 units vitamin E (increased slowly from 400 units a day), and 10,000 mg vitamin C (in several doses)-are used by some women to prevent recurrence of breast cancer.11 At these dosages, supplements can impair health. (See especially germanium caution, page 155. |

Large doses of ascorbic acid have numerous adverse affects, including weakening of red blood cells leading to hemolysis or destruction of these cells, irritation of the mucous membranes lining of the gastrointestinal tract, renal calcification, and interference with Vitamin B12 and vitamin a metabolism. It has also been shown that high levels of ascorbic acid taken daily, depletes blood copper levels with serious ramifications. Both red blood cells and the liver cells can lose copper resulting in diminished superoxide dismutase (S.O.D. |

Some Other Supplement Choices
Giving an infected pet daily doses of vitamin a (fish oil, 5,000 IU) and vitamin E (one teaspoon Rex's Wheat Germ Oil), as well as powdered or liquid vitamin C (about 500 mg.), enables a weakened immune system to fight infection more aggressively.
There are also two liquid herb preparations that are an immune stimulant and viral detoxicant. These should be used in conjunction with an ionic mineral concentration from the Great Salt Lake (ten drops of each mixed together). (Consult the Product Appendix for further information. |

Castor oil is loaded with vitamin a, which is known to be effective in treating skin ailments in general. And raw garlic irritates the skin just enough to attract the defenses of the body's immune system to the area.
Ivy The Osage Indians bound their corns and calluses with bruised ivy leaves, a practice that was said to bring results in 2-3 weeks.
LEMON In Sicily, people bind a lemon slice to the painful area, and leave it there overnight. They continue this treatment until the irritation disappears.
ONION A home remedy is to tape a slice of raw onion to the corn. |
| Because of the high vitamin a and C content, these greens help your body repair damaged tissues and help your liver clear toxins out of the blood.
European herbalists have used these anti-pain dandelion recipes for many years:
¦ Steam or saute the leaves, adding a touch of garlic and olive oil for flavor.
¦ Steep 3 teaspoons of fresh leaves in 1 cup of boiling water for dandelion tea.
¦ Make a coffee-like beverage by boiling 4 ounces of fresh dandelion root in 2 pints of water. |
| Apricot This fruit is an excellent source of beta-carotene, a form of vitamin a that has proven to be especially helpful in thwarting lung and skin cancer. (Dried apricots contain more beta-carotene than the raw fruit.) beans This nutritious vegetable, which is readily available in many varieties, has a multitude of effective preventive properties.
Beans are high in fiber, which has been widely credited with helping to prevent both cancer and heart disease. |
| Many expensive skin care creams containing retinal (a form of vitamin a) are currently on the market, but you don't have to run out and buy any of them. Good food sources of beta-carotene include carrots, pumpkins and sweet potatoes. Fresh carrot juice is a tasty alternative. The carrot juice can be mixed with apple and beetroot juice, all of which are good for the skin. If you don't have a juicer, there are many fruit and vegetable juice "bars" where you can buy these healthy mixtures, freshly squeezed.

When you bite into a hot pepper, your eyes water, and your nose runs. Your lungs and bronchial passages also produce watery secretions. The mucus in the lungs is thinned, and coughing is eased.
The compounds that give pepper its fiery effect are oily, and water can't dilute them. So, if you need to douse the fire after eating hot peppers, eat some cool yogurt or bread, or drink some milk. |

Research in 1990 again reported the effectiveness of vitamin a supplementation in reducing morbidity and mortality (JAMA, 17 February 1993, p. 898). Why has the medical profession ignored that information for more than 60 years?
Vaccine advocates knew as early as 1985 that mmr immunity waned, and they used the "resurgence" of measles, even in vaccinated people, to convince lawmakers to mandate a second dose. It was easier to do this than to admit a possible policy mistake and truly spend time on hearings to reevaluate vaccination policy. |
