B and C vitamins are most abundant in fresh fruit and vegetables. vitamin a comes in two forms: retinol, the animal form found in meat, fish, eggs, and dairy products; and beta-carotene, found in red, yellow, and orange fruit and vegetables. Vitamin E is found in seeds, nuts, and their oils and helps protect essential fats from going rancid.
Eat three or more servings of dark green, leafy, and root vegetables, and three or more servings of fresh fruit, plus some nuts or seeds, every day. |

Carotenoids become vitamin a in the body as the body has need and they have no toxicity problems.
CAROTENOIDS
It is important to have a mixture of carotenoids rather than taking only beta-carotene.
• Beta-carotene—10,000 to 15,000 IU
• Lycopene—1 to 3 mg
• Lutein/Zeaxanthin—1 to 6 mg
• Alpha carotene—500 to 800 meg
VITAMIN C
A mixture of vitamin C is important, especially calcium, potassium, zinc, and magnesium ascorbates, which are much more potent in handling oxidative stress. |

Because of the health risks associated with overdosing on vitamin a supplements, it's a smarter strategy to maximize your intake of vitamin A-rich foods.
Step 4: Exercise on a Daily Basis with Activity You Enjoy
Exercise—almost any kind of exercise—can reduce your risk of developing diabetes. Whether you're a dedicated swimmer or walker, a serious gardener or a frequent stairs-instead-of-the-elevator person—getting active and staying active pays off.
Don't be confused. Being physically active isn't the same thing as fitness. |

| Wald later received the Nobel Prize for his work with vitamin a. They recorded the average distance run by rats in running cages when their diet was normal and when deprived of calories. On the starvation diet they increased the distance run from 1.5 to 7 miles per day. This is not surprising. Animals are motivated by hunger to search for food. A running animal is much more apt to run into or after food and a fish that swims faster is more apt to find a meal. Animals tend to rest and relax or sleep after a meal. But the second part of their experiment was much more important. |

| Yogurt also contains vitamin a, vitamin D, and the B-complex vitamins. Acidophilus is also available in capsules that may be taken orally or blended into juices. Natren is one company that makes quality acidophilus products; Wakunaga of America Company has a dairy-free acidophilus supplement that is good for vegetarians and dairy-sensitive people. (See the resources section for more information about the companies mentioned in this book.) Take acidophilus capsules on an empty stomach, in the morning and before each meal. |

Natural Answers for Specific Peri- and Postmenopausal Problems
Heavy Menstrual Flow

Have a doctor measure your ferritin levels to get an accurate reading of your iron levels. Iron supplements can cause constipation. Consume brussels sprouts, dark leafy greens, and broccoli with vitamin C-rich foods and/or vitamin C supplementation.
Fatigue

| Lowered levels of vitamin a or altered vitamin a metabolism have been associated with menstrual irregularities. Thyroid malfunctions have been related to estrogen problems and are possible causal factors in breast cancer. Thus, giving the body more estradiol (and synthetic progestins) at the time of menopause may not be as prudent a course of action as common medical thought has believed. The same may hold true for natural estrogen and progesterone products. Dr. |
| However, women should not take more than the recommended daily dose of vitamin a without medical supervision, as too much vitamin a can be toxic.
Flavonoids and vitamin C work in tandem to help stabilize blood vessel walls. When blood vessel walls expand due to a drop in estrogen, hot flashes result. During peri- and postmenopause, when the estrogen levels are haphazard, it is hypothesized that vitamin C and flavonoids can take up the slack and help strengthen the walls of the blood vessels and decrease hot flashes.
Some flavonoids are estrogenic and bind to the estrogen receptors. |

A randomized study of 307 surgically cured lung cancer patients receiving 300,000 IU of vitamin a daily for twelve months versus a group taking no supplements, found that 3 7 percent of the supplemented group and 48 percent of the control group developed new primary tumors. The tumor-free interval was significantly longer in the group receiving vitamin a. Further, primary tumors developed in eighteen supplemented patients and twenty-nine control patients. |

Binzel states that research has also proven vitamin C, vitamin a, manganese, magnesium, and selenium to all be important nutritional factors for the health of the immune system in general. Thus, many factors in the total diet of humans can be critically interlinked to support the immune system and the body's natural cancer-fighting "control mechanisms." Beta carotene is a precursor of Vitamin A; that is, the livers of most mammals manufacture vitamin a from the beta carotene found in plants. Beta carotene is also one of the trendiest antioxidant discoveries of the 1980s. So exciting were the original findings about it that two studies were undertaken, both financed by the National Cancer Institute, to test whether a beta carotene supplement, in a capsule, might fend off cancer and other diseases. |

| There are some studies that suggest vitamin a toxicity has occurred at levels of ingestion below 25,000 IU. In addition, the severity of the injuries that occur at 25,000 IU suggests that substantial, but less severe and less readily recognized, injuries probably occur at somewhat lower intakes. Most experts recommend that vitamin a intake not exceed 10,000 IU for most adults or 8,000 IU for pregnant and nursing women.

Another study, this one from Stanford University, found that subjects who took three to five times the recommended daily average of vitamin a were 40 percent better able to move glucose from their blood to their cells.
Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin commonly found in liver, fish liver oils, whole and fortified milk, and eggs, as well as in orange fruits and vegetables and green leafy vegetables. It's essential for vision, a healthy immune system, and bone building. |

In that case, he said, it's a sign that the liver is not efficiently converting vitamin a precursors (carotenoids) to vitamin a. He suggested four capsules daily of boldo leaf. Within two months, the bumps were one hundred percent gone. I had absolutely smooth upper arms for the first time in fifteen years! (This is also a good example of a health issue—some possible weakness in the liver—that would never have been detected or treated by standard medicine now, yet down the road might have progressed beyond "bumpy skin" to a more serious condition. |

Common foods rich in vitamin a include cooked chard, dandelion leaves and beet greens. A four-ounce serving of these contains 15,000 to 20,000 units of vitamin a. These foods are also rich in calcium. Other good sources include watercress, kale, mustard greens, turnip greens and parsley.

On the basis of analogy, the caro-tenoids and their degradation products (pardy components of the essential oil) were also considered to be the wound healing principles because of their chemical similarity to the granulation promoting vitamin a [33, 34]. Moreover, the calendula-carotenoids have had no detectable influence on the proliferation or the chemotaxis and function of human fibroblasts [35]. Polysaccharide fractions of calendula flowers have shown immunostimulant effects in the granulocyte- and carbon clearance test in mice [17]. |

| I did what I should have done to bring it under control, including taking large quantities of vitamin C and vitamin a, but there was no relief. For two years I had a constant nasal drip which was so bad that when I gave a lecture I would have to hold a kleenex in one hand and my notes in the other. I always carried pockets full of kleenex. After two years I had given up hope. At that time, for other reasons, I did a four-day water fast. To my amazement, I was well by the fourth day. On a retest with a little milk my drippy nose promptly returned in about 15 minutes. |

Despite having no provitamin A function, carotenoids such as lycopene and lutein are still biologically active. High serum lycopene beta-carotene concentrations have been linked to a reduced risk of atherosclerosis, while preventative effects against heart disease and cancer have also been reported. As an antioxidant it is a powerful quencher of oxygen free radicals compared to other carotenoids (Bruno and Wildman 2001). Lycopene appears to play a particular role in reducing the risk of prostate cancer (Criston et al. 2000).
