As opposed to animal sources of vitamin a, these plant sources cannot deliver a toxic amount of the vitamin. (Interestingly, if you eat enough polar bear liver, which is extremely rich in so-called preformed animal vitamin a, you can die from a toxic dose of that vitamin.) Carotenoids are concentrated in a wide variety of tissues, where they help protect us from free radicals, modulate our immune response, enhance cell-to-cell communication, and possibly stimulate production of naturally occurring detoxification enzymes. |

When asked for scientific documentation, you'll usually receive stories of toxicity related to megadoses of vitamin a (especially in children), vitamin D excess (which is difficult to document except in serious extremes), liver failure with time-release niacin, or reports on the neurotoxicity of large doses of vitamin B6. While these toxicities do exist, they are quite rare and never occur when nutritional supplementation is designed by competent physicians versed in their appropriate use. |

From these studies it states that:
• Even a mild deficiency of choline produces cancer of the liver;
• vitamin E deficiency increases the risk of leukemia;
• iodine deficiency leads to cancer of the thyroid;
• deficiencies of various B vitamins result in liver damage, as well as cancers;
• deficiencies in zinc lead to cancer of the prostate;
• vitamin a deficiencies lead to tumor developments;
• and on, and on, and on.

The Daily Value of 5,000 IU for vitamin a is a safe dose, especially for women who might become or are pregnant; higher amounts might cause birth defects in fetuses. Better yet, choose beta carotene, which is relatively nontoxic at doses of 10 to 30 milligrams, and can be converted to vitamin a in the body. Smokers should consult their physicians before supplementing with beta carotene, since one preliminary study concluded that beta carotene supplements might increase lung cancer risk in people who are heavy smokers. What Should You Look For? A mixture of vitamin a and beta carotene. |

It's a lot better to take too much (with a few exceptions that might be toxic in very large amounts over an extended period of time, such as very high-dose vitamin a or selenium) and let the tissues decide how much they need and how much is excess. As nutritionist Robert Crayhon says in answer to this question, "Hey, I want expensive urine! In fact, I want the most expensive urine money can buy!"

Guava fruit is higher in vitamin C than citrus (80 mg of vitamin C in 100 g of fruit) and contains appreciable amounts of vitamin a as well.1-3 Guava fruits are also a good source of pectin—a dietary fiber.4-5 The leaves of guava are rich in flavonoids, in particular, quercetin. Much of guava's therapeutic activity is attributed to these flavonoids.1'6 The flavonoids have demonstrated antibacterial activity.6 Quercetin is thought to contribute to the anti-diarrhea effect of guava; it is able to relax intestinal smooth muscle and inhibit bowel contractions. |
| It also contains vitamin a (4,300 to 12,500 IU/100 g, compared to approximately 11,000 IU for raw carrots) and thiamine, riboflavin, and niacin in concentrations comparable to those in other fruits.
Thus far, 150 other constituents have been identified in acerola.4 In addition to ascorbic acid and the other vitamins mentioned above, acerola contains 3-methyl-3-butenol, dehydroascorbic acid, calcium, dextrose, diketogulonic acid, fructose, furfural, hexadecanoic acid, iron, limonene, 1-malic acid, phosphorus, protein, and sucrose. |
| Banned items will include natural vitamins such as mixed tocopherols (natural vitamin E), carotenoids (natural vitamin a) and B12; all forms of sulphur, boron, vanadium, silicon and most trace elements; the most readily absorbed and safest forms of calcium, magnesium, zinc, selenium, chromium and molybdenum; and other popular supplements such as CoQi0, MSM, fatty acids, amino acids, and enzymes. It will severely limit the doses of vitamins and will remove all "high-dose" (in excess of recommended daily allowances [RDA]) products from the market. |

They are more likely to store it longer in tissue and have a higher level of a form of vitamin a that is associated with toxicity. The complication is that carotene, found in many vegetables, especially carrots, is an important nutrient for the elderly. Once inside our body, our liver converts carotene into vitamin a. So we have to contend with the very tricky issue of how to separate vitamin a needs from carotene needs. |

However, there is an important caveat that must first be heeded before this natural melatonin production can take place. It is now known that melatonin production can only take place in total darkness. |
| Other well-known antioxidants are vitamin a, Vitamin C, full-spectrum Vitamin E, including tocotrienols and tocopherols, along with zinc, selenium, manganese, alpha lipoic acid, N-acetyl cysteine, and glutathione.
Clearly, through the work of Packer, Levine, and others, we are discovering just how incredibly pervasive the benefits of antioxidants are. The benefits include bolstering immune and detoxification systems, regulating genes, keeping the brain healthy, retarding and controlling the aging process.

Get vitamin a as beta-carotene. Large doses of vitamin a can cause fatigue, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and blurred vision. But as Somer notes, you really don't need to take supplemental vitamin a. Instead, take beta-carotene, which your body converts to A on an as-needed basis.
Avoid unnecessary extras. "Even if your diet is less than perfect, you almost certainly get enough biotin, vitamin K, phosphorus, potassium, and sodium," Somer says. "You don't need to take supplements of them." But if your insurance formula contains these nutrients, that's okay, too.

Chlorophyll, the "green blood" of plants, and oxygen producer of our planet through photosynthesis, contains a preform of vitamin a called beta-carotene. This substance is critical to preventing free radical degeneration in the plant. Beta-carotene is also a powerful anti-free-radical agent in the bodies of animals and humans who consume green plants. It is interesting to note that vitamin a in its full form can be toxic in excessive doses, but beta-carotene in its pre-vitamin A form has never been shown to be toxic at any level. |

Oranges and papayas are alkaline fruits which provide excellent calcium and are rich in vitamin a (beta-carotene) and vitamin C (which, among other things, is an antioxidant). Flus and colds are typically caused by too much toxicity in the body, leading to a weakened immune system. These fruits help cleanse the gastro-intestinal tract of toxicity and simultaneously nourish the body. Figs are especially excellent mucus dissolvers and are ranked with an acid-binding value of 27.81 (one of the highest ratings of any food) in Ragnar Berg's Table in the book Mucusless Diet Healing System. |

Jeanne Drisko of the University of Kansas Medical Center has successfully treated cases of cervical cancer with daily dosages of vitamin E (1,200 IU), coenzyme Q10 (300 mg), vitamin C (9 grams), beta-carotene and mixed carotenoids (25 mg), and vitamin a (10,000 IU).The regimen includes intravenous vitamin C (60 grams twice weekly), as well as conventional chemotherapy. These nutrients do not directly affect tumors. Rather they boost the ability of the body's many different immune cells to attack the cancers.
As you might imagine, many other factors influence the growth of cancers. |
| Apolipoprotein E is a constituent of low-density lipoprotein (LDL), the blood's carrier of vitamin E, vitamin a, and carotenoids. People with the APOE E4 gene also have elevated cholesterol levels and a higher risk of coronary heart disease. However, not every person with this gene will develop Alzheimer's disease, suggesting that other genes, dietary factors, and lifestyle habits influence the risk of Alzheimer's disease.
Elevated levels of homocysteine are strongly associated with an increased risk of Alzheimer's disease. |
| Most of us have been taught that we need nutrition to live, and we have learned that we need many specific nutrients, such as vitamin a for our eyes and calcium for our bones. But only recently have researchers begun to appreciate the details of how nutrition affects our DNA and genes.
Despite the frequent news reports about DNA, genes, and health, most people never hear that the body's production of DNA depends on the presence of certain vitamins. For example, you must have an adequate intake of vitamins B3 and B6 and folic acid to make DNA. |

This strategy of gaining and maintaining health with nutrient supplements, however, started to unravel in 1994-1996 with the large-scale investigation of the effects of beta-carotene (a precursor to vitamin a) supplements on lung cancer and other diseases.2,3 After four to eight years of supplement use, lung cancer had not decreased as expected; it had increased! No benefit was found from vitamins A and E for the prevention of heart disease either. |

Vitamin A can be readily made by our bodies from beta-carotene, and vitamin D can be readily made by our bodies simply by exposing our skin to about fifteen minutes of sunshine every couple days. Both of these vitamins are toxic if they are consumed in high amounts. This is one more indication that it is better to rely on the vitamin precursors, beta-carotene and sunshine, so that our bodies can readily control the timing and quantities of vitamins A and D that are needed.
Vitamin B|2 is more problematic. |
| For example, we pin our efforts and our hopes on one isolated nutrient at a time, whether it is vitamin a to prevent cancer or vitamin E to prevent heart attacks. We oversimplify and disregard the infinite complexity of nature. Often, investigating minute biochemical parts of food and trying to reach broad conclusions about diet and health leads to contradictory results. Contradictory results lead to confused scientists and policy makers, and to an increasingly confused public. |

But if they are going to spend the time to educate, Pollan asks, why not instead teach "people how to grow green vegetables [that are rich in vitamin a and other nutrients] on the margins of their rice fields, and maybe even give them the seeds to do so? Or what about handing out vitamin-A supplements to children so severely malnourished their bodies can't metabolize beta-carotene?"27
