And I submit my own experience as a demonstration of that -- I consume large amounts of spirulina, perhaps more than any person I know, and yet I don't show any of the symptoms of vitamin a toxicity at all. But just to be safe, always work with your health care provider before starting any nutritional supplements, including spirulina. |

It provides flavor and vitamin a. It provides fatty acids, which in no way can you get from a vegetable. We went out of our way to shop the Manhattan fishmeal to get that lowest level of mercury.
Mike: Interestingly enough, there is another ingredient I like to see here -- kelp.
Newman: Oh, kelp is wonderful. I love kelp. Kelp is such a healing food.
Mike: How does it help in ways some people may not be familiar with?
Newman: The mineral base of kelp helps maintain good coloring in the skin and coat. It is important for pigment. |

The most well-recognized carotenoid is beta-carotene, which is our most important plant source of vitamin A; others are alpha-carotene, gamma-carotene, canthaxanthin, cryptox-anthin, lycopene, lutein, and zeaxanthin. In addition to vitamin-like activity, carotenoids are antioxidants—efficient free radical scavengers.
The active form of vitamin a, which is found in animal foods, is a very poor antioxidant. While carotenoids in foods have been found to offer protection against cancer, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes, supplements do not appear to provide similar benefits. |

Mike: So, when people go out to a health food store or purchase quinoa products for retail, how can they make sure those products contain whole grain quinoa from your source?
Leventry: When the retail market is involved with purchasing quinoa, we have a distributor list. They can go to our website and see by state what distributors carry our product. They can order it from them. |

That is why [some manufacturers] might add synthetic vitamin a and D to cod liver oil to make it look more like the standard.
In Arctic Norway, they have a very stringent fishing policy. This ensures that the waters will never be over-fished in regards to cod fishing. Fines can go upwards to a quarter of a million dollars for a fisherman who exceeds what is allowed. There are only a certain number of fishermen certified at one given time. The Norwegian Ocean Institute goes to check the health and tonnage of various species of fish. |

And so it was named vitamin D, because there had already been identified a vitamin a, a B and a C, so the next in line was vitamin D.
Adams: So this was many decades ago then?
Dr. Holick: This was back in the early 1900s. And then they realized that if you're exposed to sunlight, or artificial ultraviolet-B radiation, that it also had anti-ricketic properties, i.e. that it had bone health properties. So all of a sudden people began to appreciate that the vitamin in cod liver oil was also being able to be made by your skin. |

Yogurt. This dairy snack is a veritable bacterial zoo. As dangerous as this sounds, the "bugs" in yogurt are really the good kind that battle the bad kind, like H. pylori. What's more, yogurt can soothe your stomach when you take antibiotics to kill H. pylori. When you feel that dull, gnawing pain coming on, reach for some yogurt. For best results, check the yogurt's label and make sure it says "active cultures." That means the good bacteria are inside, alive and kicking. |
| Your body turns beta carotene into vitamin a, another powerful antioxidant that helps increase lung capacity. If you can't find mangoes — they have lots of beta carotene, too — try a cantaloupe. This juicy, delicious member of the gourd family has been pleasing people since 2,400 B.C. It gets its brilliant orange color from beta carotene, as do carrots and pumpkins.

The fat-soluble vitamins include vitamin E, vitamin a and vitamin D.
It is vitamin D that I am most concerned about, because right now vitamin D deficiencies are widespread across Western populations, especially those in the United States. A deficiency in vitamin D directly promotes a numbers of serious diseases including diabetes, depression, osteoporosis, schizophrenia, breast cancer, prostate cancer and even gum disease. For people who are already overfed and undernourished, taking a fat-blocking pill that will reduce the absorption of vitamin D seems like dietary insanity to me. |

• raw carrots
• sweet red peppers
So when you're thinking about eye health, remember the foods that will give you the 3 Bs and PEA. Keep these nutrients in sight, and you'll have better odds of good vision for years to come. |
| Crunch into a carrot, and reap the benefits of fiber and beta carotene, which your body turns into vitamin a. Studies have shown that beta carotene from foods, but not from supplements, can help your heart.
Honey is a smart substitute for sugar. Darker honey, like buckwheat honey, has greater antioxidant powers. A recent preliminary study found it can prevent LDL from being oxidized.
Chocolate. Even chocolate in small amounts might help because it's chock-full of antioxidants. For more information on chocolate, please see Shatter common cholesterol myths on page 165. |
| That's because carrots are full of beta carotene, which converts to vitamin a — essential to good eyesight.
Studies have shown that people who eat more carotenoids like beta carotene have a 43 percent lower risk of developing age-related macular degeneration (AMD). But two other carotenoids may be even more important in avoiding AMD, says Barbara Gollman, food and nutrition consultant and author of The Phytopia Cookbook: A world of plant-centered cuisine.

That doesn't sound like much, but what you are assuring is the amount of vitamin a and D in our cod liver oil only occurs in the fish. We don't augment it with synthetic vitamins A or D. What you are getting in one teaspoon of our cod liver oil is the highest level you would see in any cod liver oil of DHA and EPA. It is 700 milligrams of DHA. It is 450 milligrams of EPA, and the vitamin D ranges anywhere from around 10 to 40 IU, which doesn't necessarily come up to your 100 percent level of intake, but it does affect brain health and mood. |

Joseph Mercola, grains contain little vitamin C and no vitamin a, and two of the major B-vitamin deficiency diseases are almost exclusively associated with excessive grain consumption. Fiber—with very few exceptions—is present in paltry amounts in most processed grain products like cereals and breads and, in any case, can be gotten from vegetables and other sources. Though some people do okay with grains, if you've got a weight problem, you are probably not one of them. Get your carbohydrates from vegetables, at least most of the time. C. Of particular importance is vitamin a status, which has been demonstrated numerous times. Nutrition, because of the widespread use of refrigeration and rapid delivery of fresh foods to the cities, was improving rapidly in the developed countries. Parallel with this were the improvements in public health measures, such as better sanitation, cleaner water supplies, and dissemination of public health information. You will recall that the same factors accounted for the dramatic fall in the incidence of cavities in children before the introduction of fluoride. |

Children with a good nutritional status are far less likely to suffer complications than poorly nourished children, especially when vitamin a intake is adequate.
It was known that women who contract rubella (German measles) during pregnancy were more likely to deliver babies with serious birth deformities. To prevent this, health officials proposed a program to vaccinate everyone with the rubella vaccine, no matter their age.
Rubella is actually a very mild disease that rarely produces complications in children—that is, until they made it into a vaccine. |

The anticancer potential of garlic may also be influenced by other dietary components such as selenium and vitamin a.
Evidence also suggests that garlic can suppress carcinogen (e.g., nitro-samine) formation and carcinogen bioactivation, via its effects on Phase I and II enzymes, etc. These aspects are reviewed in detail in the following sections.

Better yet, choose beta carotene, which is relatively nontoxic at doses of 10 to 30 milligrams, and can be converted to vitamin a in the body. Smokers should consult their physicians before supplementing with beta carotene, since one preliminary study concluded that beta carotene supplements might increase lung cancer risk in people who are heavy smokers. What Should You Look For? A mixture of vitamin a and beta carotene. Most forms of vitamin a, such as retinyl palmitate or acetate, are well absorbed.
Why Do You Need It? |

It should include 2,000 IU of vitamin a and 4,000 IU of beta-carotene. This will not only boost your immune system, but will ensure protection to your baby as well. These doses are not harmful to your baby.
During your pregnancy you should take DHA 300 mg a day along with vitamin E as mixed tocopherols 400 IU a day. Do not use either dl-alpha tocopherol form of vitamin E or dl or d-alpha tocopherol acetate. The acetate form is next to worthless. It is poorly absorbed, is a poor antioxidant, and may not enter the brain. |
| After your baby is born, and at least three weeks before the first vaccination, supplement your child's diet with a multivitamin, which should include 1,000 IU of vitamin a and all of the other vitamins in an appropriate dose. The vitamin should also contain zinc, selenium, and magnesium.
Step Three: Breast Feed
If at all possible, breast feed your baby. If for some reason you cannot breast feed, use a breast pump. If, for some reason, you are forced to bottle feed, add 50 mg of DHA to the bottle once a day and 50 IU of vitamin E. |
| Because many older folks are already immune-suppressed due to poor nutrition, especially vitamin a deficiency, they simply will not respond to vaccination by proper immunity. This means they have been exposed to the risk of complications from the vaccine without gaining any benefit. Few are aware that the success rate for flu vaccinations in the elderly is less than 50 percent, and that each vaccine contains the dubious bonus of mercury and aluminum doses that persist in the nervous system for decades. |
