Balch, CNC See book keywords and concepts | Phytochemicals include beta-carotene, indoles, isothiocyanates, glucosinolates, dithiolthiones, flavonoids, sulforaphane, triterpenoids, myristic acid, and quercetin.
Kohlrabi bulbs should be firm and pale green without scars or blemishes. Younger bulbs are more tender and do not need to be peeled. The bulbs can be stored for up to two weeks in a plastic bag in the refrigerator.
Wash kohlrabi with a vegetable brush under cool running water. Cut into uniform-sized chunks and add them to soups, or serve them steamed or roasted as a side dish. Raw kohlrabi can be shredded and added to salads. | | Phytochemicals include beta-carotene, sulforaphane, flavonoids, indoles, glucosinolates, triterpenoids, isothiocyanates, anthoxanthins, tocopherols, kaempferol, P-coumaric acid, quercetin, and sinapic acid.
Look for cauliflower heads that are firm, with compact florets. The heads should be a creamy white with no bruises or discoloration. Any leaves on the head should be crisp and green.
Cauliflower will keep in the crisper compartment of the refrigerator for up to five days. It should be stored unwashed in an open or perforated plastic bag. | | Important phytochemicals include beta-carotene, kaempferol, quercetin, rutin, stigmasterol, pectin, and phytosterols.
Select bananas that are free of bruises or obvious injury and that have intact stem ends and skins. The best eating quality is when the skin is solid yellow and newly speckled with brown spots.
Ripe bananas can be stored at room temperature for two to three days, or in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. The skins will darken in the refrigerator, but the flesh will be perfectly edible. | | Important phytochemicals include beta-carotene, quercetin, phytosterols, pectin, gallic acid, ellagic acid, fer-ulic acid, caffeic acid, tocopherol, chlorogenic acid, chlorophyll, catechin, P-coumaric acid, rutin, and sinapic acid.
Place apples in plastic bags and store them in the crisper compartment of the refrigerator. Apples purchased in good condition should keep for up to six weeks in the refrigerator.
Wash apples thoroughly before using them. Apples are on the list of produce with heavy pesticide residues. If the fruit has been waxed, peel the skin before consuming. | | A strong anti-inflammatory, quercetin is known for its effectiveness in treating prostate problems. Apples help to detoxify metals in the body, protect against heart disease, clean the bladder, protect against the effects of radiation exposure, lower blood cholesterol and blood pressure, maintain circulatory and intestinal health, and stabilize blood sugar. Latest research shows that apples may help prevent lung disorders. Vitamin C—The same stress that triggers the release of histamine alsc increases the need for vitamin C, the body's natural defense agains excessive histamine. Thus, allergies that cause the release of histamini also increase the need for vitamin C. | Sheldon Saul Hendler See book keywords and concepts | Quercetin is highly mutagenic in a certain bacterial strain and has been found to cause chromosomal damage in cultured mammalian cells. Rutin and some other bioflavonoids also have these effects. On the other hand, there is no evidence that quercetin, rutin or other bioflavonoids cause cancer in animals. In fact, they may protect against cancer. People have been consuming bioflavonoids for many years without any evidence of increased risk of cancer. Still, clinical studies are urgently needed to resolve this issue. | The Life Extension Editorial Staff See book keywords and concepts | The most effective form of quercetin is a patented water-soluble version that is available from only a few supplement companies in the United States.
Alpha-Lipoic Acid
Alpha-lipoic acid (LA) has been called the universal antioxidant because of its broad-spectrum effects in the body. LA not only works independently as an antioxidant, but it also works synergistically with other antioxidants such as vitamins C and E, glutathione, and CoQjq, helping to recycle their biologic actions in the body. In Germany, LA is an approved treatment for neuropathies and liver disease. | Earl L. Mindell, R.Ph., Ph.D. See book keywords and concepts | Diabetic Eye Disease
Diabetics should use 1,000 to 1,500 mg of quercetin and 200 meg of chromium a day. quercetin inhibits an enzyme that may be directly responsible for the formation of sugar cataracts, while chromium helps to balance blood sugar.
To slow the progression of cataracts, include plenty of tofu, eggs, asparagus, onions, garlic, carrots, cantaloupe, yams, corn and leafy greens in your diet. Make sure you're getting 50 mg of riboflavin in your multivitamin, or add an extra riboflavin supplement. | Mark Stengler, N.D. Pycnogenol and Grape Seed Extract
Pycnogenol (pronounced pick-noj'-in-nall) is a patented complex of about forty antioxidants, mostly proanthocyanidins (a family of flavonoids) and a variety of other antioxidants, including organic acids (such as cinnamic acids, caffeic acid, and ferulic acid). It is extracted from the bark of French maritime pine trees and sold under the Pycnogenol brand name by many different companies.
The many different antioxidants in Pycnogenol make its sum far greater than any of its individual parts. | | Quercetin, one particular antiinflammatory flavonoid, is found in apples and onions. A small apple (about 3.5 oz) contains approximately 5.7 mg of vitamin C, but more than 500 mg of antioxidant polyphenols and flavonoids, which together are equivalent to 1,500 mg of vitamin C.
In addition, vegetables and fruit are also rich sources of carotenoids, another class of powerful antioxidants. Although more than six hundred carotenoids have been found in nature, only a handful appear important for humans. These include alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, lutein, and lycopene. | The Life Extension Editorial Staff See book keywords and concepts | Flavonoids
Certain flavonoids, particularly rutin and quercetin, have anti-allergy effects (Fanning et al. 1983) and team up well with vitamin C, as do the oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPC) found in grape seed extract. Proanthocyanidins (grapeseed extract) may be taken (100 mg) one to three times a day. Bucca et al. (1990) found that compared to a placebo, 2 grams of vitamin C improved pulmonary function 1 hour after taking. Featon et al. (2000) found a sevenfold increase in bronchial hyperreactivity among those with the lowest intake of vitamin C. | | The bioflavonoids quercetin, myrcetin, and kaempferol (found in limes) are specifically noted in inhibiting diabetic cataracts (Head 2001). Ginkgo is a widely used flavonoid in maintaining microcirculation to the eye and inhibiting free radicals (Allard 1986).
Carotenoids
Carotenoids are fat-soluble yellowish pigments found in some plants, algae, and photosynthetic bacteria. Carotenoids serve as light-gathering pigments and offer protection from the toxic effects of UV radiation and oxygen (Schalch 1992). | Sheldon Saul Hendler See book keywords and concepts | Test-tube studies with quercetin, quercetin derivatives and bioflavonoids, using mast cells and basophils (cells involved in allergy reactions), suggest an anti-allergy role for these substances. They prevent the release of histamine and other mediators involved in allergy reactions. It is possible that they do this by stabilizing the membranes of mast cells and basophils, making them less reactive to allergens. It does not seem unlikely that the efficacy of Estivin, an old over-the-counter anti-allergy preparation, used especially by some with hay fever, is due to its bioflavonoid component. | Jack Challem See book keywords and concepts | Add 1 point _

Initial interpretation and ranking:
0 Low. You do not take any anti-inflammation supplements, either because you do not need them or because you are not aware of them.
1-3 Moderate. You take some anti-inflammation supplements, which offer some protection.
4-8 High. | | Zinc and selenium also might be of benefit, along with quercetin (which inhibits some types of inflammation-promoting adhesion molecules) and the herb boswellia. A study published in the Journal of Medicinal Food reported that the herbal antioxidant Pycnogenol (1 mg per pound of body weight, up to 200 mg daily) improved lung function in patients with asthma. It is also important to maintain a normal weight, because overweight increases the risk of asthma. (See "Overweight and Obesity" in this chapter.)
Athletic and Other Injuries
What Are Athletic Injuries? | Earl Mindell, R.Ph., Ph.D. See book keywords and concepts | Bromelain can enhance the action of quercetin by improving its absorption by the body. Bromelain and quercetin are often taken in combination, and may be combined in special herbal and vitamin formulas designed to treat allergy symptoms and asthma.
Personal Advice
Learn to relax—Numerous studies have documented that stress can aggravate or even trigger asthma. Simple relaxation techniques, such as yoga, tai chi, and mediation can help to relieve stress. I also recommend taking extra B vitamins, which are nature's own stress busters.
Clean up your act! | The Life Extension Editorial Staff See book keywords and concepts | Because the berry intake was threefold that of controls, the intake of antioxidant compounds such as quercetin and myricetin was much higher than in the omnivorous controls. RA patients subjectively benefited from the vegan diet rich in antioxidants, lactobacilli, and fiber, and this was also seen in objective measures (Hanninen et al. 2000).
Studies concerning OA and diet in peer-reviewed literature are lacking. Again, the fields of alternative and complementary medicine show significant benefit with nutritional and dietary changes for OA in clinical observation. | | By blocking the release of histamine rather than acting on histamine receptors on other cells, quercetin reduces allergic reactions more safely (no drowsiness) than many conventional drugs (Miller 2001).
Ginkgo leaf concentrated oral liquor (GLC) significantly reduces airway hyper-reactivity and improves clinical symptoms and pulmonary functions of asthma patients (Li et al. 1997). The cardiovascular effects of hawthorn have been described in a number of original works. Most studies have dealt with aqueous and alcoholic extracts as well as various fractions and constituents. The older studies were summarized in three survey works (Ammon and Handel, 1981 a-c). Summaries of more recent pharmacologic studies on hawthorn may be found in Siegel and Casper (1995) and in Kaul (1998). | The Life Extension Editorial Staff See book keywords and concepts | Vitamin K, selenium, quercetin, niacinamide, biotin, and gtape seed extract are also regarded as potentiation factors.
The goal is to achieve and maintain (for a period of time) 400 mg/dL of vitamin C in the plasma; at this concentration, every cancer cell line tested is sensitive to vitamin C. After reaching an ascorbic acid peak (as occurs during infusion), the level tetums to near baseline levels 24 hours after the IV.
Anothet petk regarding vitamin C is its ability to increase collagen production, the glue that holds the body together. |
