A recent case-control study of 288 premenopausal and postmenopausal women found that those with breast cancer consumed fewer phytoestrogens (measured by the amount excreted in their urine) than women without breast cancer.17 • In a study of postmenopausal women, phytoestrogen supplementation markedly increased sex-hormone-binding globulin (SHBG). High levels of SHBG are associated with lower breast cancer risk.18 Finally, one rather peculiar epidemiological study found a protective effect of miso (fermented soy paste) on breast cancer in a Japanese population living in Hawaii.
Experimental data supports the view that phytoestrogens, because they are natural selective estrogen modulators (SERMs), may have a protective effect against breast cancer. In laboratory tests, the phytoestrogen genistein seems to suppress the growth of many types of cancer cells.13 Studies of breast cancer in animals, however, show mixed results.14 Several epidemiological studies show a protective effect of soy consumption on breast cancer risk, but the results are not entirely consistent.
Most but not all studies have shown that supplementing one's diet with phytoestrogens can help hot flashes and vaginal dryness. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of 104 postmenopausal women found that 60 grams of isolated soy protein taken for twelve weeks reduced hot flashes by 45 percent. This compared with a 30 percent reduction in the placebo group treated with 60 grams a day of the milk protein casein,6 a statistically significant difference.
