When shopping for a supplement, look for the words high lignan on the label. This indicates that the product is rich in the omega-3, omega-6, and omega-9 fatty acids, all of which are necessary for cellular healing. Also, says Dr. Wright, if you're looking for liquid flaxseed oil instead of a capsule, look for a product that has been specially prepared using nitrogen. If that preparation method isn't used, the healthfulness of the oil is reduced during processing, he says. "A good product will tell you on the label that this was the preparation method," he says.

On the other hand, plant products like lignan and cellulose dramatically reduce cadmium absorption into the body. Also, calcium supplements in the form of bone meal may be contaminated with lead. Be aware that infants and children absorb more metals, especially lead. So don't use milk to supplement calcium in the diet because milk tends to increase lead and cadmium (and other heavy metal) absorption. However, it is more likely that a whole range of constituents work together to produce soy's many health benefits. According to Stephen Barnes, Ph.D., a top soy researcher, "Although the isoflavones are one of the most promising of these agents, the role of interactions between the components of the soy bean are largely unexplored.

The seeds contain an oil rich in lignan, proteins, and the enzyme edestinase (St. Angelo and Ory 1970). The growth hormone zeatin has been found in immature seeds (Rybicka and Engelbrecht 1974). The seeds also contain the alkaloids cannabamine A, B, C, and D, piperidine, trigonelline, and L-(+)-isoleucine-betaine (Bercht et al. 1973). Hemp seed oil, which is obtained by cold pressing the seeds, is very rich in unsaturated fatty acids (vitamin F). Active Constituents The major lignan in chaparral, known as nordihy-droguaiaretic acid (NDGA), has potent anti-inflammatory activity, possibly due to its ability to block the actions of the enzyme lipoxygenase.4 This enzyme creates pro-inflammatory chemicals known as prostaglandins; by blocking this process chaparral may be helpful for inflammatory conditions. At high doses NDGA also inhibits cyclooxygenase,5 an enzyme similar to lipoxygenase. Chaparral also contains antioxidant flavonoids and has anti-amoeba activity in test tubes.

Flaxseed contains a lignan called secoisolariciresinol diglu-coside, or SDG. When you eat flaxseed, this compound is taken up by bacteria in the intestine, which convert it into protective estrogenic compounds. A number of studies have found that the administration of flaxseed or an isolated form of SDG may cause reductions in tumor size.23-24 We often discuss estrogen as though it's a single substance, but every woman has a variety of different estrogens.

Flax is a superior source of lignan, a mildly estrogenic compound that helps normalize a woman's menstrual cycle and that has anticancer, antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties. Flax seeds are highly mucilaginous, and when they come in contact with liquid, they become soft and jellylike. This soothing property makes them highly useful as an intestinal cleanser and bowel regulator for diverticulitus and to soothe coughing, sore throats, and chronic bronchial complaints.

Increased lignan ingestion has been associated with increased concentrations of SHBG, but this was not confirmed in a clinical study.289 Linseed intake by normal premenopausal women was consistently associated with longer luteal phase (LP) lengths and higher ratios of LP progesterone to oestradiol.289 These findings may reflect favourably on breast cancer risk. An earlier animal study found that linseed supplementation reduced early risk markers for breast cancer.

The flaxseed oil lignan SDG is metabolized by bacteria in the colon to enterolactone and enterodiol. These substances are absorbed from the colon and metabolized to several hydroxylated metabolites in the body. INDICATIONS AND USAGE Flaxseed and flaxseed oil may be indicated in hyperlipid-emia, to decrease platelet aggregation, to lower blood pressure, to help prevent heart attacks and stroke, and to ameliorate some of the symptoms of arthritis. There is a suggestion that it may be helpful in some cancers.
The Mediterranean diet, high in ALA, appears to lower the risk of coronary artery disease and certain types of cancer. The lignan SDG belongs to a group of plant substances known as phytoestrogens. ACTIONS AND PHARMACOLOGY ACTIONS Flaxseed oil may have anti-inflammatory, anti-thrombotic and anti-proliferative activities. MECHANISM OF ACTION ALA is metabolized to eicosopentaenoic acid (EPA). EPA is a precursor of the series-3 prostaglandins, the series-5 leukotrienes and the series-3 thromboxanes. These eicosa-noids have anti-inflammatory and anti-atherogenic properties.
In addition, flaxseed oil contains varying amounts of the lignan, secoisolariciresinol diglycoside (SDG). Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) is an n-3(omega-3), all-cis polyunsaturated fatty acid containing 18 carbon atoms and three double bonds. It is also known as ALA; ALA, 18:3n-3; 9,12,15-octadecatrienoic acid and (Z, Z, Z)-9, 12, 15 octadecatrienoic acid. ALA has the following structural formula: .(CH2)6COOH Alpha-linolenic acid ALA is present in flaxseed oil in the form of a triglyceride.

The pattern of isoflavonoid and lignan excretion in the urine is similar to endogenous estrogens.47 Studies of the effects of phytoestrogens on hormone levels are conflicting. Lu et al48 found that the consumption of soy products by premenopausal women resulted in decreased circulating ovarian steroids and adrenal androgens, as well as increased length of the menstrual cycle. Six healthy females, aged 22-29, were given 12 ounces of soy milk three times daily with meals for 1 month.

The most significant correlation was between the levels of the soy isoflavone, equol, and the risk of breast cancer, with those in the highest quartile of equol excretion exhibiting only one-quarter the risk of those in the lowest quartile - a fourfold reduction in risk. The lignan, enterolactone, and the isoflavone, daidzein, were associated with a threefold reduction in risk. The daidzein results were insignificant, after correcting for confounding variables. Similar trends were noted for both pre- and postmenopausal groups.

As of yet, the efficacy has not been completely and unequivocally proven [3]. Interference with hormone metabolism as well as inflammatory inhibiting effects have been discussed as modes of action. It is known that 9-hydroxy-10-/ra«.r-12-or-octadienoic acid inhibits aromatase activity [11], though due to its instability it is, however, not detectable in extracts [13].
