Most of these flavonoids are found in the internal membranes of the fruits and in the bitter rind. Cell studies have found that a flavonoid called naringin, found principally in grapefruit, can protect bone-cell chromosomes from radiation damage. This characteristic, if true in humans, would lower the risk of leukemia. Other studies have found that naringenin, a closely related compound, can inhibit the growth of colon- and breast-cancer cells. In a human study, German researchers used large dosages of the flavonoid limonene, found in lemons and oranges, to treat women with breast cancer.
Both supplements contain complexes of many individual antioxidant flavonoids, with some similarities and differences. Experiments have shown that Pycnogenol reduces the activity of two genes, calgranulin A and B, by twenty-two times in skin cells. These two genes are overactive in psoriasis and other skin diseases, and so Pycnogenol may be beneficial in psoriasis. Other research has found that Pycnogenol protects against some of the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) rays in sunlight. In these experiments researchers used UV rays to turn on genes involved in inflammation following sunburn.

Its mild antibacterial activity is attributed to the presence of certain flavonoids and phenolics.56 Neem Neem (Azadirachta indica A. Juss., Meliaceae family), an important Indian medicinal plant, is one of those plants with a wide variety of active constituents that consequently finds many folkloric uses. Some of the more important of these are as a directly applied vaginal contraceptive and as an insect and pest repellant. Its antibacterial properties have been most explored against Staphylococcus /nutans and lactobacilli for use in tooth preservative preparations.
Antimicrobial activity of licorice flavonoids against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Fitoterapia 2002, 73, (6), 536-539: Fukui, H.; Goto, K.; Tabata, M., Two antimicrobial flavanones from the leaves of Glycyrrhiza glabra. Chem Pharm Bull (Tokyo) 1988, 36, (10), 4174-4176; Tsukiyama, R.; Katsura, H.; Tokuriki, N.; Kobayashi, M., Antibacterial activity of licochalcone A against spore-forming bacteria. Antimicrob Agents Chemother 2002, 46, (5), 1226-1230; Mitscher, L. A.; Park, Y. H.; Clark, D.; Beal, J. L., Antimicrobial agents from higher plants.
Many flavonoids possess antimicrobial activity, but these are usually too weak to find medicinal use for this indication. Licorice Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra L., Leguminoseae family) is used extensively as a flavoring agent and finds medical applications as a demulcent, expectorant, antiulcer, anti-inflammatory, and laxative agent. A significant number of flavonoid constituents have been identified that possess antimicrobial properties.53 Mace Mace (Myristica fragrans Houtt., Myristicaceae family) has a venerable history of culinary and medicinal use in the East Indies and India.
The chemical basis for the observed clinical effects is still not completely elucidated, although the monoamine oxidase inhibitory effects of the flavonoids, and possibly the naphthodione hypericin, and the serotonin reuptake inhibitor phloridzin, are considered to play major parts in the overall effect. Because of its widespread use, reports of interactions with several other drugs are now appearing, based on the ability of the extract to up-regulate cytochrome P450 enzymes in the liver.

Active constituents Boneset contains sesquiterpene lactones, such as euper-folin, euperfolitin, and eufoliatin, as well as polysaccharides and flavonoids (page 516). In a test tube study, a particular polysaccharide in boneset was found to stimulate immune cell function (page 255).2 This may partially explain its use to treat minor viral infections, such as colds (page 129) and the flu (page 269). Boneset also triggers sweating by raising body temperature, potentially of benefit for colds and flu as well.3 How much is usually taken? Traditionally, boneset is taken as a tea or tincture.

Other documented "active" chemicals include flavonoids, sesquiterpene lactones, polyphenols, and caf-feoylquinic acids. In the 1970s, European scientists first documented cynarin's ability to lower cholesterol in humans.1^1 Over the years, other researchers have continued to document artichoke's or cynarin's effect in this area. One study, published in 2000, was a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study that used an artichoke leaf extract that was standardized to its cynarin content.

Blueberries and grapes contain flavonoids called anthocyanosides, which may help prevent varicose veins and improve visual function. Whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and other plant foods are good sources of dietary fiber. Most health-care practitioners accept that fibet promotes normal bowel function, prevents constipation, and helps prevent diverticular disease of the colon. In addition, evidence suggests that eating enough fiber may reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes, hemorrhoids, and some types of cancer.

Summary of Recommendations for Cervical Dysplasia Note: Treatment should be supervised by a doctor. • Folic acid, 0.4 to 1.0 mg per day for prevention, 10 to 50 mg per day for treatment. Supplemental vitamin B12 may enhance the effect of folic acid. (Warning: Supplementing with more than 0.4 mg of folic acid per day can interfere with the laboratory diagnosis of vitamin B12 deficiency; doses of folic acid greater than 0.4 mg per day should therefore be supervised by a doctor.
However, research suggests that vitamin B3, vitamin C, carotenoids, flavonoids, calcium, potassium, selenium, chromium, zinc, copper, silicon, iodine, and essential fatty acids all play a role in atherosclerosis prevention. More-detailed information is available for individuals interested in further study.22 Excessive intake of iron, on the other hand, may actually increase the risk of heart disease,23 although not all studies agree on that point. Because iron is an oxidizing agent, iron overload might cause some of the same problems we are trying to prevent by taking antioxidants.
In addition, nutrients such as zinc, taurine, and certain plant-derived flavonoids play an important role in the normal metabolism of retinal tissue. Since nutrients work in the body as a team, it is likely that a combination of nutrients would perform better than any single nutrient by itself. Eldetly individuals often have weak digestive systems, and many older people consume diets of questionable nutritional value. As a result, multiple nutritional deficiencies are common in this age group. A comprehensive nutritional program might, therefore, be of great value for individuals with AMD.
Other food-derived flavonoids have also been shown to improve capillary integrity.9 Some B Vitamins and Gamma-Linolenic Acid Help Neuropathy Diabetic neuropathy can cause severe pain, tingling, numbness, and weakness. Conventional therapy, which consists primarily of medications to relieve pain, is often ineffective. A number of different nutrients have been found to relieve diabetic neuropathy. Although it is not always clear how these nutrients work, they are safe and are thetefore worth a try.
Bilberry and ginkgo, herbal medications, contain flavonoids and other substances important to the retina. Vitamin A and copper ..." "Hold on," Elaine said. "I can't remember all of this." Broccoli is a great source of the flavonoids, carotenoids, vitamin C, folate, and potassium that help prevent heart disease. It also provides generous amounts of fiber, vitamin E, and vitamin B6, which promote cardiovascular health. Broccoli is one of the few vegetables, along with spinach, that are relatively high in coenzyme QIO (CoQlo), a fat-soluble antioxidant that is a major contributor to the production of energy in our bodies. At least in people with diagnosed heart disease, CoQio may play a cardioprotective role.

The affinity of flavonoids for these binding sites correlates with their growth-inhibiting activity.83 Biological Response Modifiers Biological response modifiers directly or indirectly utilize the immune system to counter cancer or minimize the side effects of many treatments. They represent an attempt to repair, stimulate, or enhance the immune system's natural anticancer function. Theoretically, biological response modifiers may offer ways to make cancer cells more susceptible to destruction by the immune response.
It now appears that a group of flavonoids in cranberry, called proanthocyanidins, are responsible for these anti-adhesion effects.1 Since sugar consumption is a predisposing factor for cystitis, unsweetened cranberry juice is recommended. Here is some general advice that should be followed both during active infection and to prevent recurrent cystitis, especially for those prone to these infections. Avoid using tampons, as they contain additives that can injure the lining of the vagina.
