It not only enhances the flavor of many foods, but its chock-full of vitamin A, B and C, calcium, potassium, iron, carotene, germanium, and selenium, plus countless biologically active compound agents. Most of all, it contains the amino acid allicin (short for allyl disulfide) which, when used externally as an oil, helps reverse acne. Jewelweed—This extract is a Native American treatment for poison ivy and other topical irritants. Creams made from this herb can reduce redness, irritation, and inflammation, but will not necessarily prevent irritation.

It contains vitamins Bb B12, and C, as well as betaine, beta-sitosterol, carotene, and physalien. Chinese medicine classifies it as a blood tonic and sometimes calls it the fruit of the matrimony vine. Yellow Dock [Rumex crispus) Yellow dock contains anthraquinone glycosides, including nepodon and emodin, which are also found in buckthorn and rhubarb. It is an alterative, cholagogue, and laxative, and is employed chiefly in chronic cutaneous disorders with glandular swelling.

Especially important for the enzymes of detoxification are vitamins A, C, E; carotene and related cartotenoids; bioflavonoids; and minerals such as selenium, copper, manganese, and sulfur (you can get sulfur from protein, onion, and garlic). Avoid eating too many refined carbohydrates, such as breads and bakery goods made with white flour and sugar, candies, and colas. Sugar has been shown to lower P-450 enzyme action—a large superfamily of enzymes that are among the most well-known for detoxification.

Minor minerals in the seeds include iodine, manganese, copper, magnesium, sodium, potassium and zinc. The seeds also contain lecithin, oxalic acid, pentosans, traces of narc-otine and an amorphous alkaloid; the enzymes diatase, emulsin, lipase and nuclease. The proteins are deficient in lysine and methionine. A polysaccharide isolated from seeds showed antitumour activity in mice bearing yoshida sarcoma. Caution Overdoses and drug-abuse of opium leads to reduction of mental capacity, reactive euphoria, bradycardia, pulmonary and brain oedemas. Opium is obsolete as a herbal drug.
A 44 I.U., thiamine 0.011, riboflavin 0.023, nicotinic acid 0.9, and ascorbic acid 3 mg/100 g. Calorific value 317 cal/100 g. Analysis of the edible portion (80 %) of the dried dates (Aarada, Chhuhaaraa) gave the following values: moisture 11.9, protein 2.9, fat 0.5, carbohydrates 82.9 and ash 1.8 %. Calcium 35.9, phosphorus 129.3 and iron 3.4 mg. Calorific value 347 cal/100 g. All these constituents make the herb a potent tonic with a wide coverage for children; for male a good adjuvant with sex tonics and for females a natural galactagogue. The plant is used in folk medicine for postnatal complaints. The leaves are used in soup for indigestion and biliousness. Use in Western herbal Alternanthera Forsk is basically native to the subtropical regions of Australia and South America. Alternanthera philoxeroides (Mart.) Griseb.
C 14 mg/100 g. The fruit is a good source of sugars and vitamin C but is poor in calcium. The fruit contains 0.27 % of pectin (as calcium pec-tate); during ripening the insoluble pectin changes into soluble pectin. The antidiarrhoeal activity of aqueous and alcoholic extracts of the fruit rind of P. granatum was investigated in three experimental models using albino rats. The extracts exhibited significant activity in rats when compared to loperamide hydrochloride, an antidiarrhoeal drug.

Two general supplements that I often recommend are Cyto-Redoxin by Tyler Encapsulations (includes vitamin C, E, selenium, N-acetyl cysteine, CoQIO, alpha-lipoic acid, carotene complex, zinc, grape seed extract, and green tea extract) and Clinical Nutrients Antioxidant by Phyto Pharmica, which has similar ingredients. Many times general supplements like these (and others listed in Resources) are the foundation of a protocol I recommend, and I add other specific nutrients and supplements based on the individual's immediate needs.

In the 834 women studied, the intake of crude fiber, carotene and vitamin C showed a strong significant inverse association with breast cancer risk. The effect was closely associated with the intake of green vegetables. The women in the lowest fertile intake of crude fiber intake and the highest fertile intake of fat intake had a 2.9-fold increased risk for breast cancer relative to those in the highest fertile of crude fiber intake and the lowest fertile of fat intake.33 The same protective effect has also been found in Table 57.

Natural colors include carotene, caramel, annatto, beet red (powdered beets), saffron, turmeric, paprika, grapes, vegetable and fruit juices, and titanium dioxide. All of these are considered safe in the usual amounts used to color foods, though there is some concern about extracts such as safrole and turmeric.
It is of no real consequence and will clear when there is a reduction in carotene intake. Carotenosis can be differentiated from jaundice somewhat by the color and also by the fact that the white parts of the eyes do not turn color as they do with jaundice. Too much vitamin A intake, however, can lead to slight swelling of the brain and resulting pressure headaches, which may be described as the feeling of a tight band around the forehead. Nausea and vomiting may also occur, as can irritability, dizziness, abdominal pain, and hair loss.
It is white because it contains no carotene pigment, and is thus low in vitamin A, but it is rich in potassium, folic acid, and vitamin C. It is also about 25 percent protein and one of the cancer-preventive* cruciferous vegetables. Cauliflower can be eaten raw with dips and steamed or cooked with other vegetables. Curried in eastern Indian cooking is a very tasty way to eat cauliflower. Flowering Vegetables Cucumbers Pumpkins Eggplants Squashes Peppers Tomatoes These plants are many, mainly growing on small bushes and vines. Each one that I will discuss here has many different varieties.

It has been speculated that a proper ratio of carotene to retinol must be maintained to ensure proper corpus luteum function. As the corpus luteum produces progesterone, inadequate corpus luteum function could have significant deleterious effects. Inadequate corpus luteum secretory function is one of the characteristic features of infertile and/or irregular menstrual cycles.12 Furthermore, an increased estrogen to progesterone ratio has been implicated in a variety of clinical conditions, including ovarian cysts, premenstrual tension syndrome, fibrocystic breast disease, and breast cancer.

Foods that are frequently colored include candies, baked goods, soft drinks, and such dairy products as butter, cheese, and cream. FLAVORINGS A wide variety of spices, natural extractives, oleoresins, and essential oils are used in processed foods. In fact, of the three thousand food additives known to be added to our food supply, two thousand are flavorings to replace the flavors lost during processing. In addition, the modern flavor chemist has produced many synthetic flavors.

Tomatoes are a perfect food to study as they are quite high in lycopene, but very low in carotene. The data were obtained from a series of hospital-based studies on various cancers of the digestive tract between 1985 and 1991.19 Frequency of consumption of raw tomatoes was divided into four levels: less than two; three to four; four; five to six; and greater than seven servings per week. Results showed a consistent pattern of protection by high intake of raw tomatoes in all examined cancer sites of the digestive tract.

In contrast, vitamin E and carotene levels did not change to any significant degree presumably because they are fat-soluble and are therefore retained in the body for longer periods of time. Given the importance of vitamin C, the serious depletion of vitamin C may deteriorate defense mechanisms against free radicals, infection, and wound repair in these patients. Supplementation appears to be essential in patients recovering from heart surgery, or any surgery for that matter. CoQ10 is recommended in an attempt to prevent oxidative damage during repurfusion.

C or citrus fruits, carotene or grams of dark green and deep yellow vegetables. In principle, the important analytic variables should be identified at the outset of the study, since that decision will determine the nature and format of the data that are collected. For example, if the variable of interest is total calories from fat rather than the characteristics of specific fats, which may differ according to their sources and processing, then the interviewer need not help the respondent differentiate between animal fats and vegetable oils or between liquid and hydrogenated shortenings.
Lung cancer incidence was inversely associated with carotene intake both with and without adjustment for cigarette smoking. There was no significant association of lung cancer with the intake of preformed vitamin A. Larynx. Graham et_ al. (1981) studied male cases of laryngeal cancer and controls. After controlling for cigarette smoking and alcohol consumption, they found an inverse relationship (with a dose-response gradient) between cancer risk and indices of both vitamins A and C intake based on frequency of consumption of selected foods.
Because the indices of vitamin A intake in these studies were derived from foods that also contain other natural inhibitors of carcinogenesis, it is also possible that dietary constituents other than preformed vitamin A or carotene are the relevant risk-reducing factors. BLADDER CANCER Most of the epidemiological literature on the association between diet and bladder cancer pertains to coffee and nonnutritive sweeteners. In both correlation and case-control studies, direct associations have been found between coffee consumption and bladder cancer (C. T. Miller et al., 1978; Simon et al.

The fragrant orange flesh, protected by its tan rind, is a dead giveaway to cantaloupe's high carotene content; the same goes for the casaba, the Crenshaw, and the watermelon. The latter is particularly rich in the phytochemicals that fight cancer of the esophagus. Once harvested, melons become softer. Since the only way to tell ripeness for certain is by cutting the melon open, which stores naturally will not allow, it's important to take some care in choosing the melon you'll take home.
