The results showed that those with rheumatoid arthritis had 29 per cent lower beta carotene in their blood before they were diagnosed, 5 per cent less vitamin E and 7 per cent less vitamin A.14 Other studies have found low levels of vitamin C in rheumatoid arthritis sufferers.15
It is unclear from this study whether these lower levels of antioxidants are a cause or an effect of the disease. |

The results showed that high dietary intake of fruit and vegetables and beta carotene was linked to a decreased risk of lung cancer in both men and women.5
Breast cancer
In a study published in 1998, researchers in Missouri examined blood levels of various nutrients in women who developed breast cancer after donating blood to a bank over a ten year period. They then compared these levels to women who were free of cancer. They found lower levels of the carotenes beta cryptoxanthin, lycopene, lutein and zeaxanthin in patients who developed breast cancer. |

BETA-CAROTENE • Provitamin A. beta carotene. Found in all plants and in many animal tissues. It is the chief yellow coloring matter of carrots, butter, and egg yolk. Extracted as red crystals or crystalline powder. It is used as a coloring in cosmetics. Also used in the manufacture of Vitamin A. Too much carotene in the blood can lead to carotenemia, a pale yellow-red pigmentation of the skin that may be mistaken for jaundice. It is a benign condition, and withdrawal of carotene from the diet cures it. Nontoxic on the skin. |

Vitamin D ~ 400 units daily
• Vitamin C — 2000 mg in divided doses
• beta carotene — 15 mg daily
Exercise was encouraged 20 minutes daily or 30 minutes three times weekly. Bone grows only when stress is applied to it (exercise).
Patients who were on estrogen continued to take .3 to .625 mg of conjugated estrogen (Premarin) for three weeks each month.
Patients applied a cream containing 3% natural progesterone (Fem-Gest) at bedtime daily, for twelve days each month. For those taking estrogen, the cream was to be applied the last two weeks of the month. |
| Also take Vitamin E 400mg to 800mg., beta carotene 15,000 units, Vitamin D 400IU better 800 IU, B complex, Vitamin A 5,000 units and Biotin 300mcg.
Minerals that are needed include Calcium, Iodine, Magnesium, Zinc, Copper, Manganese, Chromium, Selenium 200 meg., Molybdenum, Vanadium and Boron.
Flaxseed Or Flax Oil
Everyone will benefit from taking 4 tablespoons of ground flaxseed or 2 tablespoons of flax oil daily. This will correct the widespread deficiency of Omega 3 essential fatty acids found in diets containing artificial substances like margarine, salad oil, and shortenings. |
| Radiation destroys 80% of the Vitamin A in eggs and 48% of the beta carotene in orange juice, but still is authorized by the FDA to be used in these foods.
The flavor, odor and texture of food is transformed. Pork become red; beef can smell like a wet dog and eggs can become colorless, runny and capable of ruining recipes. Whether protein after being injured by radiation will still be capable of functioning as building blocks for body protein is problematic. |
| Flax oil also contains beta carotene (precursor to Vitamin A), Vitamin E, lecithin and phosphatides, all of which are needed for efficient digestion of fats and oils.
Flaxseed, flax oil, and ground flaxseed can be obtained from your local health food store and from Natural Health Team. Phone 1-800-4162806
Magnesium
Magnesium deficiency is very common, particularly in elderly persons. Approximately 60% of this mineral is found in our bones and 26% in muscles, with the remainder in soft tissue and body fluids. |
| The few fatty acids still remaining have now been converted into toxic peroxides. beta carotene, an important cancer preventative, and chlorophyll along with most of the fatty acids disappear during this "bleaching".
Deodorizing is essential, as the gentle aroma of natural seed oil has been replaced by unappetizing chemical odors and tastes. This requires steam distillation at a high temperature (518 degrees) for one hour. This removes the last remains of Vitamin E but does get rid of the dangerous peroxides and some pesticides. |

A reduction in risk of disease progression was seen for beta carotene and vitamin E intake but was less consistent. Antioxidant nutrients did not seem to affect the initial appearance of the disease.4
B vitamins
A controlled, double-blinded, crossover study done in 1994 found that patients taking vitamin B12 and folic acid supplements had less pain and stiffness than others not taking the supplements. The study involved 26 people diagnosed for an average of 5.7 years with osteoarthritis of the hands who had been medicated by prescribed NSAIDs. |

However, more recent and much larger and longer studies have domonstrated that supplementation with beta carotene does not alter serum concentrations of vitamin E.
Desiccated ox bile: Desiccated ox bile may increase the absorption of vitamin E.
Dietary fiber: Dietary fiber supplementation may decrease the antioxidative effect of a supplement containing alpha-tocopherol and carotenoids.
Iron: Most iron supplements contain the ferrous form of iron. This cation can oxidize unesterified vitamin E to its pro-oxidant form if taken concomitantly. |
| Acerola also contains flavonoids, other vitamins, such as thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid and beta carotene, and minerals, such as magnesium and potassium.
Malphighia glabra has also shown active anti-fungal properties. Folk medicine uses of acerola include treatment of liver ailments, diarrhea, dysentery, coughs, colds and sore throats.

A large randomized trial, the Alpha-Tocopherol beta carotene (ATBC) Cancer Prevention Study, the subjects of which were Finnish male smokers, reported that subjects consuming 50 milligrams daily of dl-alpha-tocopherol for 6 years had a 50% increase in mortality from hemorrhagic stroke. The numbers were 66 versus 44 strokes in the supplemented versus the control groups. This result was statistically significant. Interestingly, an increase in hemorrhagic stroke has not been observed in other large, long-term studies using much higher doses of the vitamin. |

Health Benefits Turmeric is the highest known source of beta carotene. It tones the spleen-pancreas, liver, and stomach. It strengthens the immune system, enhances digestion, and helps dissolve uterine tumors, cysts, and gallstones. Turmeric is antibacterial and may be used to regulate blood sugar for diabetics.
The bright yellow pigment in turmeric appears to inhibit the development of colon cancer. Turmeric may also be used topically to reduce canker sores and cold sores. Apply the powder directly to the afflicted area or mixed with water to form a paste. |

Half the group is taking 50 mg. of beta carotene; the other half a placebo. Results of this study should be available soon (Science News, January 30, 1988).
Not long ago the cancer experts rejected any suggestion of a link between food and malignancy, and generally pointed with pride at the "great American diet." Because of this attitude, throughout the 1960s and much of the 1970s NCI spent virtually nothing on nutrition research. The same held—and still holds—true of other centers, such as Memorial Sloan-Kettering, which avoid the topic almost entirely. |
| Both vitamin A and beta carotene prevented the development of new leukoplakia during a year of treatment of Indian betel quid chewers (Science News, June 11, 1988).
The U.S. recommended daily requirement of vitamin A is only 5,000 IU's. Afraid of potential toxicity, the Canadian scientists are looking for ways of delivering the vitamin or its precursor with greater assurance of safety (ibid.).
The same team, headed by Dr. Hans F. Stich, has also found a possible rationale for the vitamin's effectiveness. |
| Our feeling is that if you eat a good, balanced diet you get all the beta carotene you need," added Dr. Lawrence Garfinkel of the American Cancer Society (ibid.).
Such statements ignore the fact that many people do not get even the government's recommended daily allowance (RDA) for vitamin A or other nutrients. This is especially true of smokers and hard drinkers, who sometimes suffer serious depletion of vitamins due to their habits (Merck, 1987: 932).

Also, many different vitamins are found in aloe including vitamins C, E, Bt, B2, Bg, folic acid, choline, and beta carotene. Aloe is also a source of many minerals including zinc, which is well known for its wound-healing properties as well. Aloe also contains 20 different amino acids that are known to help with tissue repair.
Scientists still don't know exactly how aloe heals the skin so effectively, though parts of the puzzle are beginning to fit together. It has been shown to stimulate the cells that grow collagen, the protein substance that binds skin together. |
