B complex. b-complex vitamins are important throughout life, but there is an extra need for these during menopause. They can be obtained from whole grains, and green vegetables. B5 and B6 are especially helpful during menopause (300-400 mg B5, 150 mg B6 per day). Folic acid, in prescription doses, is a valuable replacement for female hormones, according to Dr. Carlton Fredericks. Essential fatty acids. EFAs, which are precursors to the natural hormones in the body, are very important for both men and women. People on low-fat diets should pay special attention to this.

Preliminary medical research to investigate this theory did show that giving thiamine and b-complex vitamins improved the vision of people with early stages of glaucoma. Recommendation: If you have borderline glaucoma or are at risk because of family history for it, take 100 mg thiamine per day along with 50 to 100 mg B-complex. • Deficiency of vitamin C may cause an increase in eye pressures.

One double-blind trial used a multivitamin/mineral supplement containing vitamin B6 (600 mg per day), magnesium (500 mg per day), vitamin E (200 IU per day), vitamin A (25,000 IU per day), b-complex vitamins, and various other vitamins and minerals.40 This supplement was found to relieve each of the four different categories of symptoms that have been associated wtih PMS. Similar results were reported in another study.41 Are There Any Side Effects or Interactions? Refer to the individual supplement for information about any side effects or interactions. Herbs That May Be Helpful Vitex (p.
Many doctors of natural medicine use at least 100 mg of b-complex vitamins when oral supplementation is called for. It is possible that successful treatment of the B-complex vitamin deficiencies may actually reduce alcohol cravings because animals crave alcohol when fed a B-complex-deficient diet.11 The daily combination of 3 grams of vitamin C (p. 341), 3 grams of niacin (p. 339), 600 mg of vitamin B6 (p. 340), and 600 IU of vitamin E (p. 344) has been used by researchers from the University of Mississippi Medical Center in an attempt to reduce anxiety and depression in alcoholics.
The b-complex vitamins (p. 341) are important for athletes, because they are needed to produce energy from carbohydrates. Exercisers may have slightly increased requirements for some of the B vitamins, including vitamin B2 (p. 337), vitamin B6 (p. 340), and pantothenic acid (p. 340);50 athletic performance can suffer if these slightly increased needs are not met.51 However, most athletes obtain enough B vitamins from their diet without supplementation,52 and supplementation studies have found no effect on performance measures for vitamin B2,53,54 niacin (p. 339),55 or vitamin B6.
B-complex vitamins (p. 341 ),6 including folic acid (p. 297).7 People with achlorhydria (no stomach acid) or hypochlorhydria (low stomach acid) may be at risk for developing certain mineral deficiencies. Since minerals are important not only for body structure (as in bones and teeth) but also to activate enzymes (such as superoxide dismutase) and hormones (such as insulin), deficiencies can lead to health problems. One of the major tasks of stomach acid is to break proteins down to the point that pancreatic proteolytic enzymes (p. 289) can easily work.
Furthermore, no evidence supports the use of megadoses of b-complex vitamins to combat everyday stress, boost energy, or control food cravings, unless a person has a severe deficiency of one or more of them. Again contrary to popular belief, no evidence indicates that people should take all B vitamins to avoid an imbalance when one or more individual B vitamin is taken for a specific health condition. Most multiple vitamin/mineral (p. 314) products contain the B-complex along with the rest of the essential vitamins and minerals.
Brewer's yeast is not an essential nutrient, but it can be used as a source of b-complex vitamins (p. 341) and protein. It is by far the best source of chromium (p. 282), both in terms of quantity and bioavailability. How Much Is Usually Taken? Brewer's yeast is often taken as a powder, tablets, or capsules. High-quality brewer's yeast powder or flakes contain as much as 60 meg of chromium per tablespoon. When doctors recommend brewer's yeast, they will often suggest 1-2 tablespoons of this high-potency bulk product, usually as an optima] way to supply chromium.

Clinical studies show that b-complex vitamins, especially riboflavin and B6, are useful therapies. One study showed that pancreatic enzymes taken internally both diminish the lesions and reduce digestive problems. Some digestive problems may occur because of a reduced output of hydrochloric acid, a situation that often occurs with rosacea patients. As for migraine headaches, which sometimes occur, investigators surmise they may be due to a food sensitivity problem.

He says to look for a multivitamin/mineral supplement containing all of these nutrients. Fibromyalgia Some doctors say that fibromyalgia comes from using muscles too much, to the point where they are stressed or get injured. Others say it's the result of not using your muscles enough, another consequence of a sedentary lifestyle.

Sunflower seeds, too, stabilize the nerves because they contain oils that are calming and b-complex vitamins that help nourish the nervous system. Tobacco increases the output of adrenal gland hormones which reduces the allergic reaction of smokers. Sunflower seeds do the same. These allergic reactions can be a major problem to individuals attempting to stop smoking. Dr. Douglass said that he had seen patients develop respiratory problems when they stopped smoking and he thought this was likely due to allergic reactions that had been kept in check by the anti-allergic effects of tobacco.

Eating sugary foods often initiates a vicious cycle of additional sugar cravings, as an increase in your body's need for b-complex vitamins creates craving for even more sugar. Nicotine is a brain stimulant much like caffeine, and since stimulating the brain magnifies PMS symptoms, eliminating smoking and cutting back on coffee, tea, and cocoa is a good idea. PMS is often associated with disruptions in the normal sleep pattern. In addition to eliminating caffeine, a supplemental dose of melatonin might be helpful. (See "Sleep Disorders," p. 242.

Strawberries provide vitamin A, as much vitamin C as oranges, and some b-complex vitamins, as well as silicon, some potassium, and fiber. Buying Buy local strawberries, fully red and slightly soft, with hulls intact. Since strawberries do not ripen off the vine, local vine-ripened strawberries will be the most aromatic and flavorful. Out-of-season or out-of-region strawberries may look like strawberries, but that's about all. Peak season is from late spring through early summer. Put it in any soup stock and every pot of beans. Add it to stews, or use it as a wrap for food morsels. It also stands on its own baked, deep-fried, or boiled. Kombu, when rehydrated and cooked with liquid, becomes mucilaginous, and after several hours of cooking it will break into small pieces. When crisped (without hydration) for a few minutes in the oven, it becomes a delicious chip.
