Thiamin
A factor of the vitamin b complex. Thiamin is found in the outer coating of many cereal grains, beans, peas, and egg yolk.
Trans-fatty acids
Formed in oils and fat from the food process called hydrogenation. Any food whose ingredient list includes partially hydrogenated vegetable oils will contain trans-fatty acids. Increased heart disease is associated with the consumption of trans-fatty acids.
Tumor
A mass of new tissue growth that is independent of its surrounding structures. |

On theoretical grounds, I recommend multivitamin supplements because of their vitamin b complex content, as well as the trace metals and minerals, such as magnesium and zinc that they contain. The supplement should meet 100 percent of the RDA (virtually all of them do), and contain no added sugar, salt, or chemical additives. Check the label to make sure of that. If you're taking vitamins, always do so during or immediately after a meal to enhance their absorption. |

Many women with dysplasia have a deficiency of folic acid, a part of the vitamin b complex. Folic acid also tends to be low among women who take oral contraceptives or drink heavily. Excessive estrogen, whether synthetic or produced by the body, can also increase the chances of cervical dysplasia and cervical cancer. And DES daughters—women exposed prenatally to the synthetic estrogen diethylstilbestrol—are at special risk of cervical dysplasia and vaginal cancer. |

Choline
It is part of the vitamin b complex and is essential for making certain amino acids.
Chromosomes
The microscopic rod-shaped bodies that are contained in the nucleus of the cell. They contain the genes and transmit the hereditary characteristics of the individual.
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS)
A syndrome in which the person becomes severely fatigued. It usually hits after an infection like mononucleosis or Epstein-Barr virus. CFS does not have an effective treatment. |

Choline is said to be a vitamin b complex vitamin. Technically, it is in its natural form a ptomaine found in the bile and suprarenal (above the kidney) gland extract. It is essential for proper functioning of the liver. Although made in the body through synthesis, it is not made in sufficient amounts to meet the needs of most higher animals. It must therefore be supplied in food. Chole is the Greek word for bile and this explains the use of the name choline. It meets the requirements for classification as a vitamin and is considered essential for growth and for the prevention of fatty livers. |

If your child is struggling with behavior or mood disorders, you may wish to consult a nutritionally oriented physician or a clinical nutritionist about a vitamin b complex, magnesium, zinc, antioxidant nutrients, iron, and essential fatty acids (fish oil, flaxseed oil, or a combination of EPA/DHA). wheat toast, salmon hash, or brown rice pudding. (Recipes for many of these breakfast treats can be found in Chapter 8.) z. Lunches can be dicier with kids. |
Some of the more common "brain nutrients" include many of the vitamin b complex, vitamin C, magnesium, zinc, manganese, and chromium. Other nutrients seem to play a lesser or less visible role in the functionality of the brain. Of the macronutrients (essential fatty acids, proteins, and carbohydrates), all are of equal importance, and must be adequately provided on a daily basis.
The following nutrient-deficiency lists are not inclusive but will give you a general indication of your own nutritional status. |

As long as you're taking vitamin E, try vitamin b complex supplements too. Anecdotal reports suggest that they may also be helpful.
Methylxanthine in caffeine is one of the main constituents of coffee, and is also present in tea, cocoa, soft drinks, chocolate, and some candies. I have the impression, but no proof, that avoiding caffeine eases the discomfort of lumpy breasts. Whatever improvement I have observed among my own patients may be due to the "placebo" effect and the power of suggestion. |

Patients received an intravenous injection of horsechestnut extract (10 ml per day), strophanthin or digitalis, vitamin b complex and vitamin C or a similar injection without the horsechestnut extract for 4 days prior to surgery and continuing for up to 7 days after the operation. Horsechestnut significantly reduced the incidence of deep venous thrombosis following surgery compared to the control group (lung embolism patients: p<0.01; other patients: p<0.001). |

So here's the bottom line with respect to simple "fibrocystic changes" in your breasts: (1) they do not lead or predispose to breast cancer; (2) there are medications that can improve your symptoms; (3) vitamin E and vitamin b complex may have some beneficial effect and there is no harm trying them; (4) abstaining from caffeine-containing foods such as chocolate and cola may help, especially if you expect it to.

NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS
• vitamin b complex (50 milligrams a day) and extra B-6 (50 milligrams) may be useful if fluid retention is diagnosed.
HERBAL REMEDIES
• Take ginkgo (40 milligrams twice a day), which may take up to four months of use to be effective.
Ulcerative Colitis
See COLITIS.
Ulcer (Duodenal, Gastric, Peptic)
An erosion in the mucosal lining of the upper intestinal tract, causing pain or burning. Hemorrhaging is often associated with the condition. Gastric ulcers are sometimes linked with stomach cancer. |
NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS
• Unless there is an intolerance to or appetite-increasing effect from B vitamins, take a multiple vitamin/ mineral formula that provides vitamin b complex (up to 50 milligrams a day).
• Take 5-hydroxytryptophan (100 milligrams twice a day) to help block starch/carbohydrate craving. This pharmaceutical derivative of tryptophan is available by prescription only.
• Take chromium (1,000 micrograms a day) and biotin (3,000 micrograms a day) to reduce sugar craving. Glutamine (500 milligrams three times a day) may also help. |
Take vitamin b complex (25 to 50 milligrams a day with meals). Note: A very small percentage of the population will develop agitation and worse insomnia with B-complex supplementation.
• If adrenal-pituitary abnormalities are related (see Chapter Eleven), try phosphatidyl serine, a combination of the amino acid serine and the mineral phosphorus (Seriphos, by T. E. Neesby of Fresno, California) (up to 300 milligrams a day).
• Melatonin (up to 3 or 4 milligrams) may be taken one hour before bedtime. The synthetic form with no added brain tissue is recommended. |
NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS
• Take vitamin b complex (up to 100 milligrams a day) and zinc (up to 50 milligrams a day). A combination of calcium and magnesium (up to 800 milligrams of each daily) may be helpful. Amino acid testing and appropriate supplementation are recommended (see CHRONIC FATIGUE SYNDROME).
• Take phosphatidylcholine (up to 4,000 milligrams a day) or lecithin (up to 15 grams a day), which may help lessen or prevent the manic phase.
• See DEPRESSION.
Memory Impairment
Inability to remember recent or past details, lack of concentration, and poor mental focus. |

Consider nutritional supplements such as calcium, magnesium, tryptophan and vitamin b complex.
• All green leafy herbs and foods.
• Green milky oats as well as oatmeal.
• Consider herbs with volatile oils.
They can induce a sense of peace or relaxation due to the action of the aroma on the limbic system in the brain via the olfactory nerve. Using essential oils like lavender, chamomile, ylang ylang and orange can induce a sense of relaxation. Adding a small amount of lavender oil or other essential oils to a warm or tepid bath helps calm the nervous system and induce relaxation. |

Vitamin E, another useful antioxidant, should be supplemented in quantities of 400 to 800 IU per day, while 100 mg of vitamin b complex should be consumed three times daily. Vitamin B3, also known as niacinamide, is useful in amending blood sugar abnormalities, while B6 tends to shelter the thymus gland from free radical damage.
Zinc picolinate can substantially augment the body's supply of zinc when it's taken in quantities of 35 to 50 mg daily. The picolinate element of the supplement aids in transporting this vital element into the cell. |

Vitamin B-Complex
The vitamin b complex refers to all of the known essential water-soluble vitamins except for vitamin C (p. 341). These include thiamine (p. 337) (vitamin B ), riboflavin (p. 338) (vitamin B2), niacin (p. 339) (vitamin B3), pantothenic acid (p. 340) (vitamin B5), pyridoxine (vitamin B6 [p. 340]), biotin (p. 272), folic acid (p. 297) and the cobalamins (vitamin B]2 [p. 337]). "Vitamin B" was once thought to be a single nutrient that existed in extracts of rice, liver, or yeast. |

Vitamin B complex drained off pounds of water; my fingers now look actually 'skinny' and the pains are completely gone. My ankles, legs, and wrists are much thinner, and the most important thing, my spirits have been lifted tremendously.
"I almost feel like I get a 'high' from B vitamins. (By the way, when I asked my doctor if I might have a B deficiency, he almost laughed at me.) Also, I noticed another effect—since taking the vitamins my monthly period has been cut almost in half. And another thing—my craving for sweets, which I have fought for years, has been diminshed. |
