In the early years of the twentieth century, when the founders of modern psychiatry were defining the common psychiatric diseases, mental hospitals were filled with psychotic patients suffering from vitamin b3 deficiency (pellagra) or the late stages of syphilis or postencephalitic catatonia (the state of immobile, trancelike withdrawal depicted in the movie Awakenings, induced by viral infection of the brain). Until the specific factors that produced psychosis in these patients were understood, many were given a diagnosis of schizophrenia. |

L-arginine and gamma hydroxy butyrate (GHB) also impact sexual chemistry. And vitamin b3, also known as niacin, increases blood flow to the pelvic organs and promotes erection.
It's the combination of such nutrients and their enzymes that determines food's ability to enhance sexual functioning. Each food item has its own chemistry, and some contain higher amounts of nutrimones than others. Eating the right foods as part of a high-performance diet, exercising regularly, and effectively managing stress all will contribute to your sexual vitality. Mind-body balance rejuvenates the sex glands. |
To do so, it requires vitamin b3, vitamin C, and folic acid to facilitate its conversion into norepinepherine and dopamine—another key neurotransmitter. Whenever stress factors into depression, tyrosine is the goto amino acid. It corrects body chemistry by regulating the all-important P.T.A. axis.

Ll Consider taking a vitamin b3 (niacin) supplement. Niacin is a proven, low-cost treatment for lowering LDL, raising HDL, and reducing the production of blood clotting factors that cause heart attacks. The drawback to using niacin is that it causes flushing of the face twenty to thirty minutes after it is taken. Sustained-release forms do not cause this problem, but can cause nausea, stomach upset, and liver damage, and should be avoided. A safer form of niacin, inositol hexaniacinate, does not cause liver damage, and is recommended. |
Ll Consult your physician about taking supplemental niacinamide (a form of vitamin b3). This B vitamin has produced very good results in controlling RA symptoms, but can cause liver damage in some cases. People with RA who use high-dose niacinamide should have their blood tested every three months to monitor for potential liver problems.
LJ Limit your consumption of beef, eggs, refined carbohydrates and sugars, and animal fat. These foods contain omega-6 fatty acids. |
Ll Do not take more than 50 milligrams of vitamin b3 (niacin) or 3,000 milligrams of vitamin C per day. In excess, these vitamins compete with uric acid for excretion into the urine, and cause uric acid to accumulate in the body.
Ll Do not take aspirin or diuretics (water pills). These drugs can trigger a gout attack.
Ll Do not take supplements containing the amino acid glycine. Glycine can be converted into uric acid more rapidly in people who suffer from gout.
Ll Maintain a normal body weight. Obesity increases the risk of repeat gout attacks. (See overweight in Part Two. |
Do not take too much, since vitamin b3 aggravates glaucoma at daily dosages over 200 milligrams.
Ll Take 200 to 400 micrograms of chromium per day. This mineral complements the B vitamins by allowing the eye's focusing muscles to use glucose more efficiently.
Ll Avoid steroid drugs of all kinds. These drugs can bring about glaucoma by destroying collagen structures within the eye. If you must take prescribed steroid drugs, ask your physician to prescribe the smallest effective dosage for the shortest time possible. |

Vitamins A, Bi, Be, E, and niacinamide (a form of vitamin b3) have also proven effective in treating and preventing arthritis.35 Vitamin D is a fat-soluble nutrient, considered to be both a vitamin and a hormone. It controls the absorption of calcium and phosphorus used in bone formation.36
Other dietary supplements that have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects important for arthritis prevention and treatment include boron, zinc, copper, selenium, manganese, pantothenic acid, and sulfur. |

Supplementing the diet of diabetics with vitamin b3 in the form of niacinamide has been shown to exert many favorable effects. Foremost is its possible application in preventing the development of Type I diabetes.47"50 Niacinamide, also called nicotinamide, has been shown to prevent the development of diabetes in experimental animals. This observation led to several pilot clinical trials which suggest that niacinamide can prevent Type I diabetes from developing, or, if given soon enough at the onset of diabetes, help restore beta-cells or at least slow their destruction. |

A good range for vitamin b3 is thirty to fifty milligrams. The vitamin C need is at least two thousand milligrams per day. The magnesium need is around four hundred milligrams per day, and zinc need is between fifteen and twenty milligrams. About four hundred units of the d-Alpha-tocopherol of vitamin E is needed, and ten thousand units of vitamin A. If these amounts can be achieved by natural whole foods and food concentrates, this is the optimum way to go.
Another way to optimize DHA production is to avoid habits or medical conditions that block the process. |

For those with chronically low blood pressure, a common feature of celiac disease, caution is also appropriate when supplementing with vitamin b3. Some individuals choose to begin with very small doses.
Vitamin A Supplementation
Vitamin A deficiency is commonly associated with recurring infections, especially in children. Vitamin A deficiency is also the leading cause of blindness in children worldwide. The ability to safely take vaccinations also appears to be closely linked to vitamin A status. Deficiency of zinc and this vitamin may also play a key role in food allergies. |

One is vitamin b3, or niacin, which can cause a temporary flush of the skin, but is less likely to do so in timed-release form.
(Remember, however, that the timed-release form is more likely to cause liver problems in some people.) The other valuable timed-release supplement is iron, which often causes some constipation and indigestion in plain form. It is usually better tolerated as timed-release iron fumarate. The common drug-store variety, iron sulfate, seems to be the worst for causing constipation. |
There are a few problems from excessive doses of vitamin b3 (niacin), especially in the timed-release form, and vitamin B6 (pyridoxine). The doses required for such side effects are usually enormous compared with typical therapeutic levels. The side effects have usually been completely reversible. It is wise to be aware of these risks but not overly anxious about them.
The minerals, amino acids, accessory food factors and flavonoids are not generally classified according to solubility. |

Suggested Dosage: 200 milligrams of vitamin b3 daily. Do not take the time-release form of niacin, as it may cause liver damage.
Vitamin B5 (Pantothenic Acid)
Vitamin B5 is required in energy production. It is also involved in the synthesis of adrenal hormones and red blood cells. Vitamin B5's greatest benefits for the brain are derived from its role in the synthesis of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which is involved in memory and learning. Without adequate supplies of pantothenic acid, your body cannot convert choline into acetylcholine. |

The B vitamins are particularly key to efficient thyroid production:
• A shortage of vitamin B2 will depress the function of ovaries and testes and will prevent the thyroid and adrenal glands from secreting necessary hormones.
• vitamin b3 (niacin) is necessary not only for TH production but also for respiration and for the metabolism of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats.
• We don't know whether vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) is necessary for the thyroid or the pituitary gland, but we do know that without sufficient quantities of it TH production falls. |

Because of its vascular stimulation and effects of lowering cholesterol and blood pressure, vitamin b3 has been used preventively for such serious secondary problems of cardiovascular disease as myocardial infarctions (heart attacks) and strokes. Also, some neurologic problems, such as Bell's palsy and trigeminal neuralgia, have been helped by niacin supplementation. In osteoarthritis, to help reduce joint pain and improve mobility, niacinamide has been used in amounts beginning at 500 mg. twice daily up to 1,000 mg. three times a day along with 100 mg. daily of B complex. |

And vitamin b3, or niacin, helps dilate the blood vessels and capillaries, which is necessary for sexual arousal.
Of course, maintaining optimal blood circulation is also an important element in ensuring sexual vitality. Anything that interferes with circulation, such as a high cholesterol level, can dampen sexual ardor.
One possibly promising substance for ameliorating age-associated sexual decline is the homeopathic formulation called Avena sativa, which is prescribed for impotence and for sexual debility. |
