In metabolism, tryptophan is transformed along with vitamin b3 into a compound called 5HTP, which along with vitamin B6 is then transformed into the neurotransmitter serotonin, our primary stress-defense shield and buffer against depression. Tryptophan is found in raw, high protein foods such as hemp seeds, pumpkin seeds, bee pollen, spirulina, blue-green algae, chlorella, goji berries, wolfberries, maca root, cacao, etc. Tryptophan is heat volatile and is therefore corrupted in the cooking process.

Hoffer, one of the pioneers in the medical use of vitamins, treated Robert with 3,000 mg of niacin (a form of vitamin b3) and 3,000 mg of vitamin C daily. Robert recovered, became gainfully employed, married, and fathered four children. Several years later another psychiatrist told Robert that the vitamins were of no value, so he stopped taking them. His psychotic behavior returned and became so annoying to the community that he was asked to leave or to be committed to a mental hospital. Robert and his wife, who was also schizophrenic, eventually sought treatment from Hoffer.

For additional vitamin b3, eat chicken, turkey, peanuts, and apricots. Get more B6 from avocados, bananas, carrots, rice, and shrimp. Bounce back with chicken broth. Don't wait until you have a cold to enjoy soothing chicken soup. Have some, as well, when your brain is tired — like after doing your taxes or struggling to compare insurance policies. Japanese researchers found a simple chicken extract can help you recover your energy more quickly after mental stress. A tasty bowl of soup should do the job even better.

If your diet is low in Protein, and high in Calories, you need vitamin b3. Stress and emotional pressure (fear, pain, anxiety, anger, insomnia, and competitive stress) reduces pancreatic bicarbonate for alkalining the small intestines, impedes the absorption of Amino acids into the bloodstream, reduces proteolytic Enzymes, and may deplete Nitrogen reserves one third.

The alleged advantage of IHN over niacin (another form of vitamin b3) is a lower risk of toxicity. A double-blind trial explored the effect of 2 grams of IHN taken twice per day for three months.5 In nonsmokers and in people with unchanged smoking habits, the increase in walking distance was significantly greater in the IHN group than in the placebo group. Other double-blind research has confirmed IHN's ability to improve symptoms of intermittent claudication compared with placebo.6 This _ treatment should be monitored by a doctor.

Originally called vitamin b3, niacin helps aid in the formation of cellular energy and the building of new compounds. It helps keep the skin, mouth, nerves, and intestines healthy and strong, and aids in the extraction of energy from carbohydrates, fat, and protein. Since the mid-1950s doctors have been using a form of niacin called nicotinic acid to reduce elevated cholesterol. When You Run Short of Niacin Besides the three Ds, symptoms of niacin deficiency include nausea, vomiting, headaches, and fatigue.

Deficiencies in vitamin b3 have been linked to short-term memory loss, fatigue, depression, and dementia. vitamin b3 has been used as a treatment for mental disorders, such as schizophrenia. Suggested Dosage: 200 milligrams of vitamin b3 daily. Do not take the time-release form of niacin, as it may cause liver damage. Vitamin B5 (Pantothenic Acid) Vitamin B5 is required in energy production. It is also involved in the synthesis of adrenal hormones and red blood cells.

Although niacinamide is capable of performing most of the functions of vitamin b3, a small amount of niacin seems to be necessary for blood-sugar regulation. In one study, 16 elderly individuals received either 200 meg of chromium, 100 mg of niacin, or both, daily for 28 days. Fasting plasma-glucose levels and glucose tolerance were unaffected by either chromium or niacin alone. However, when these nutrients were taken together, the individuals experienced significant improvements in both fasting blood sugar and glucose tolerance.

You can have your protein and eat healthy, too. Chicken, turkey, and fish are high in protein. They're the kinds of foods that can let you eat light while protecting your sight. But what if you're a vegetarian? You can get protein from any dish that combines grains and legumes. Because the legumes group includes both beans and peanuts, even whole grain bread with peanut butter gets the job done.

VITAMIN B3: NIACINAMIDE, THE NERVE PROTECTOR There are two components of vitamin B3: niacin and niacinamide. Niacin contains enzymes that aid carbohydrate metabolism at the cellular level. It is an indispensable part of NAD and NADP enzyme systems, which guarantee that carbs are efficiently converted into fuel. Niacinamide has a Valium-like impact on nerves. A diet deficient in vitamin b3 can cause the malnutritive condition pellagra, in which brain function deteriorates and ultimately ends in dementia.

In addition, pistachios are well endowed with B vitamins, being an excellent source of vitamin B6 (37 percent of the recommended daily intake per ounce), vitamin Bl (22 percent of the recommended daily intake per ounce), and vitamin b3 (12 percent of the recommended daily intake per ounce).
Pecans are also an excellent source of vitamin Bl (17 percent of the recommended daily intake per ounce) and a good source of vitamin b3 (6 percent of the recommended daily intake), vitamin B6 (5 percent of the recommended daily intake), vitamin B5 (5 percent of the recommended daily intake), and vitamin E (8 percent of the recommended daily intake). In addition, this nut really shines in the mineral department.
They are also a good source of copper, iron, vitamin b3, phosphorus, vitamin Bl, zinc, and vitamin E. One serving (10 to 12 nuts) provides 204 calories, 21.5 grams of fat, 2.2 grams of protein, and 3.9 grams of carbohydrate. HEALTH BENEFITS The health benefits of macadamia nuts are similar to those of other nuts that provide a high content of monounsaturated fat and arginine. Several studies conducted at the University of Hawaii have shown their significant health benefits. For example, the latest study was conducted to assess the cholesterol-lowering potential of macadamia nuts.
NUTRITIONAL HIGHLIGHTS Soy sauce is a good source of vitamin b3. It is also a good source of certain minerals, including iron, phosphorous, and manganese. It also has free amino acids. Tamari is a source of free amino acids and vitamin B2. HEALTH BENEFITS Due to their vitamins and amino acids, soy sauce and tamari do confer some nutritional benefit. One concern is that there may be too much sodium in this food. In truth, you consume less sodium when you use soy sauce because the flavor is more penetrating. Reduced-sodium soy sauces have curbed the sodium in soy sauce even further.
As discussed above, those people subsisting primarily on corn run the risk of developing pellagra, a vitamin b3 (niacin) deficiency. One way to avoid this is to eat it in tortilla form, which contain cornmeal and limestone potash together, to allow the B3 to become available for absorption. Corn is a fine source of vitamin Bl (thiamine). It also is considered a good supplier of vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid), vitamins C, E, folic acid, and the minerals magnesium and phosphorus. Corn is considered to be low in protein content, as its levels of the amino acids lysine and trytophan are minimal.

Niacinamide therapy was first described by Dr. William Kaufman in the 1940s, and it has been used successfully by nutrition-oriented practitioners ever since. Kaufman treated 663 arthritic patients, some for as long as 20 years. In most patients, the range of motion of the joints improved, while pain and swelling gradually diminished.

Older people taking 3 mg of vitamin B2 and 40 mg of vitamin b3 per day were partly protected against cataracts in one trial.15 However, the intake of vitamin B2 in China is relatively low, and it is not clear whether supplementation would help prevent cataracts in populations where vitamin B2 intake is higher. The major antioxidants in the lens of the eye are vitamin C (page 604)16 and glutathione (a molecule composed of three amino acids [page 465]).17 Vitamin C is needed to activate vitamin E (page 609),18 which in turn activates glutathione. Both nutrients are important for healthy vision.
Activated vitamin b3 used intravenously has also helped alcoholics quit drinking.6 Niacinamide—a safer form of the same vitamin—might have similar actions and has been reported to improve alcohol metabolism in animals.7 Deficiencies of other B-complex (page 603) vitamins are common with chronic alcohol use.8 The situation is exacerbated by the fact that alcoholics have an increased need for B vitamins.9 It is possible that successful treatment of B-complex vitamin deficiencies may actually reduce alcohol cravings, because animals crave alcohol when fed a B-complex-deficient diet.
NADH deficiency is known to occur only in the presence of vitamin b3 (page 598) deficiency, which is rare in Western society except in some alcoholics (page 12). Which form of NADH is best? NADH appears to be a chemically unstable molecule that decomposes rapidly. For this reason, techniques have been developed to stabilize the NADH sold in tablet form. At the ptesent time, it is not known which commercially available NADH products are most effective. How much is usually taken? Researchers have used 10 mg per day, taken with water only, on an empty stomach.

Pellagra, a disease characterized by fatigue, skin rashes, and digestive tract inflammation, is caused by a deficiency of niacin, also known as vitamin b3. People who have a diet that is dominated by corn run the risk of developing pellagra, for the niacin in corn is not readily absorbable. Keenly observing this condition, the Native Americans learned to serve corn with a little limestone that had been burned into ash.
